Well, from January 4th to 6th Gagarin Club in Athens will host the richest and most incredible horror festival in Greece yet.
First, there's music included with groups like IN THE NURSERY and ZOMBINA AND THE SKELETONS.
Now, the programme will include 13 full length movies and 7 shorts.
Now, a few samples that will prove that Greece is finally waking up....

Well, I went there yesterday from the beginning. I found Bill, not from Onar, but another old close friend, the guy behind PIRANHA greek zine. We had watched too many horror films together two decades ago and for me it was something unique to watch this festival with him drinking beers, speaking about films and about are lifes, I had to speak with him for a long time!
I also got a few photos, well, I'm one of the worst photographers in the world actually, but I hope I give you an idea below...
Bill told me about the Thessaloniki Festival, awful films, but they screen the new Argento (first screening outside Rome!) - he found it mediocre :(
But he met Asia Argento - she presented the movie and she was the DJ for the party afterwards! He also has a small video with her as a DJ...
The first day was OK, some cool films, the exhibitions, all that stuff for sale (DVDs, comix, books, fanzines, nothing really rare though) but I was expecting more people...I didn't stay for the concert, four movies and two shorts (one 30min) was too much I suppose...
The sound was OK but I suppose Gagarin must buy a better projector, there are much better projectors now...
And what about the movies, Miltos?
Well, the first movie, MURDER PARTY, was a nice surprise! I was thinking, just from the title, it would be a silly movie, but I saw a little sick gem! A random invitation to a Halloween party leads a man who works for the police trapped by some almost lunatic modern artists who use him as an object for their horrific "art" ideas. Snuff, this is it. The movie has a very good plot, pretty dialogues, dark humor, sickness and tons of cheap gore. Very good indeed !!
THE CHAIR was not so good. I was expecting a very good movie reading the IMDb review but what I saw was a low budget flick trying hard to be serious...but the story has serious problems, it's simply unbeleivable, with many unexplained things. Not really bad, director manages to create an eerie atmosphere with some sick plot twists, I just expected much more, that's all...
SPEK.TER is a short film with gothic-rock girls, blood & nudity. I didn't understand much...
PUNK ROCK HOLOCAUST...Bliah !! What can I say about this film? A mass-killer butchers hundreds of people (even the bands!) in a punt festival. A horror comedy with very bad humor, tons of cheap gore, a lot of punk music (but very bad with only 2-3 good songs) and a silly storyline (if you can call it that way). This movie could me 15min long or 15 hours long, to get the idea. Blame Satan for the murders...In fact blame him for everything! We didn't know if we should laugh or cry watching it. OK, it somehow works in a festival as a big joke but I can't imagine I could watch it on DVD at home !!
CANNIBAL FLEST RICT is a black&white little gem 30min long made from the comix man Gris Grimly. Two vampires are looking for flesh in a graveyard and start a long funny dialogue about their food & tastes. Finally the steal a corpse but a "Cthulu" monster eats their flesh! Director made it look like an old horror movie with lines on the screen etc. A very good film!
HELL'S GROUND: OK, to be honest I mainly went there to see the Pakistani film. Bubonic Films and Mondo Macabro together in a new gorefest! I didn't know what to expect...The film is about some teenagers who get lost in a strange place with zombies and some lunatics that turns to be a family. The film is a bit slow in the beginning trying to create characters. Afterwars becomes eerie, sick & gory. We don't see the killer in the beginning but later we find out the place is full of zombies because of the water pollution. There is a very nice scene with zombies eating flesh but from now on director forgets the zombie motive (WHY?) and turns the films to a Pakistani Texas Chainsaw Massacre: A lunatic mother with her two lunatic sons - one of them dressed like a Pakistani girl wearing that thing that covers all the body & face, in Greece we call it "bourga" but I don't know the original word, sorry - with the daddy's corpse in the house etc...An insane family of cannibals! The film has nice acting, nice Pakistani music and songs, sickness, tons of gore, but some plot mistakes...A cool horror film but I was expecting something more original, something inspired from the Pakistan tradition and not a film inspired from TCM so much...But I suppose Pakistani background manages to make at last some difference !!
Tonight is the Turkish MUSALLAT but I'm affraid I cannot be there...
