I just wanted to install WMP11 and right after unpacking and right before the install it looks if you have a valid key or whatever.
So in my case it couldn't validate my Windows.
I have to say, this was a cracked or illegal version of Windows XP Professional.
But someone I know had an unused legal key left, so with instructions on the Microsoft-website I changed the illegal key to a valid key.
And it worked, everything's working, it's up to date, it had to download and install like 58 updates but everything works, except WMP11 sais my Windows isn't valid or something like that.

I got this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads...22-a2726b266d25

Would this be an error in the installer or did something happen to my Windows?
this really sux...

Well it is most likely because you did not have a valid key before. The Genuine tool is very particular in what it wants to see, so if it sees any flaws within the key system it will not let you by.

You can try doing this: Uninstall Your Windows Media Player 11 by going to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add or Remove Windows Components (left side)

Once you are in the new window you can scroll down and you will see Windows Media Player, Uncheck ONLY windows and click on OK it will uninstall your Windows Media Player.

Once it has uninstalled restart your computer and check Windows Updates, you will see Windows Media Player 11 should be available for download. Re-download it and try to reinstall and see if the same thing happens. If it does there is nothing you can really do unless you reformatted your computer and used the legit key. silver5.gif

Well, first of all, it doesn't matter if you install an "illegal" version of Windows.
I mean, the software doesn't matter, it's the same.
What makes it legal is when you bought a (valid) key and use it.
Well, someone had one left and gave it to me, so I changed the illegal (probably keygenerated) key into the valid key that the person gave to me.
I changed the key with instructions from the Microsoft website itself and it succeeded, so why does it still show as invalid?
All I meant was, I've changed the illegal version into a legal version, so it SHOULD be valid now with this key.

And I can't uninstall Windows Media Player 11 because I can't even install it.
Unless you mean that I have to uninstall any version of WMP I have installed.
I believe 9 is installed on here by standard.

I understand that you have changed the key. But the problem is because you have INSTALLED Windows with the illegal CD key which still has parts connected to the registry. The Windows key changer from the Microsoft website only changed the validation key on the surface. It is meant for legit keys that can not be validated to be re-entered, not for fake keys.

And as for the Windows Media Player 11 problem I wanted you to uninstall your previous version of Windows Media Player so that you could try to install Windows Media Player 11 with no kind of conflictions. And are you trying to use Windows Update to download it or did you try this link?

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme...d/download.aspx

As rickykemp said, "as much as we'd like to help we can't", it's hard to help you pinpoint problems when the problem lies within something we really can't go near with our terms of service agreement. Believe me I am trying to beat around the bush as much as possible, to try and help you out with this one.

Yeah ok, but you have to know you probably wouldn't be helping with illegal actions because myself I'm trying to use an actual legal key.
Also, I already thought it wouldn't be a problem anymore since I changed it... *grr*

Well, I downloaded WMP11 from the official website, I think a different page than your link though, and then when I clicked the file I downloaded it appeared to be an installer.
First it would exctract files, then it would check my Windows and ofcourse stop and show me the website where I could buy a key.

So I'll try to uninstall this WMP and check for updates again.
But there's no way I'm going to format the thing again, I've had too much work to it already.

Isn't there any way to change the key besides the way I did before?
Cause it already actually looked like a same kind of window as you'd get with the installation.
And what use is it to give instructions on how to change the key like this if not everything would work...

Well, I tried your instructions:

First of all, I didn't see what you said.
I mean, the things I could (de)select didn't show 'windows' .
So I only selected WMP, when it was done and restarted WMP was still on there and programmes like Outlook are gone...

Oh yeah, and now I find my cursors are gone except the white standard ones...
Computers are driving me mad again, they're still not user-friendly for sure.

i think the best way is to re-install your xp operating sys and enter a valid 25 dig key, b/c without a valid key, it's not guaranteed that you'll get the latest updates and major pitches from Microsoft.

Damage,

I' not sure what you did as you may have sad you followed my directions. Uninstalling Windows Media Player would not effect your Outlook or your cursors.

I really can't agree with monsterkkk more. It's not the point that you have a legit key, but it's that you used an illegal one to install in the first place. The only thing that you can do "LEGALLY" is use the KeyUpdateTool, which you have already does. Perhaps try another download for it and try again.

http://fileforum.betanews.com/download/Mic...ol/1155742141/1

We understand you are getting frustrated, but we are giving you as much help as we can. As we know you don't want to reformat but honestly if the KeyUpdateTool doesn't work then there is no other way (for Soft Hardware) to give you help unless you reformatted with the legit Windows key. It's just what happens when you use an illegal key to install.

Ok, I'll try that.

But monsterkkk, I think you can always just illegaly download Windows and use any whatever key, I guess with a keygenerator, I don't know cause I don't do it.

This newer PC was bought with an illegal version of Windows XP Professional already installed.
We do have a legal version of Windows XP Home, but it was already on the older PC.
I could've installed that one on the newer PC and also left the same one on the older PC because that PC is now in the attic without internet so without MS-service.
But then I was told XP Pro was a lot better and I should leave that version on and change the key to an actual key provided by MS.

So that's what happened and I guess the key has only been changed, as described, "on the surface" .

But now I'll try the thing with the link and all...

I know you try to help, I'm not annoyed by you or anything, but by computers.
They just keep going on and on with errors, like most other technology.

Oh yeah, those instruction you gave Infinity, I followed them as close as possible.
I think it just looked the same or else I followed the wrong path.
Everything standard in Windows seems to have been uninstalled except Windows Media Player.
There was this small window with a list where you could select things from to change.
So I only selected WMP and the rest were things like 'Outlook' etc.
Now, for instance, I can only choose the standard white cursor and not the "silver" 3D cursors, and also things like the audio-mixer and paint are gone.
In Dutch it's a thing under 'Bureau Accessories' or maybe just 'Accessories' in English.
It's really weird...

But I guess I can't reinstall Windows with the legit key without removing anything else?
Like Limit said, unless he meant WITH formatting everything.

And for updates, the next update I get downloads some Genuine Key checker thing or whatever, so I guess I'm skwewed anyhow silver13.gif .

Heyyy, I just used the KeyUpdateTool which was on the website of the link.
Then I entered the key in there again and restarted the PC.
It said it was succesful and I tried to install WMP11 again and it worked.

So I guess I have a legal version of Windows now, and also gotten a valid key.
And I also guess (if ever needed) I shouldn't change the key with Microsoft's instructions on how to manually change the key, but use this handy programme.

ThanX (especially for the link)
