Siobhan sat at her desk, her wand and a feather on the desktop in front of her. She had a student coming in for a tutoring session. Ryuzaki Noriko seemed to be having some trouble with her charm work, but Siobhan wasn’t entirely sure why. Other teachers said the girl had been at Seireino Uta all through high school, so she should have been able to perform a simple levitation charm. Apparently that, however, was not the case.

Siobhan had reviewed Noriko’s files and her marks weren’t bad—no T’s on her report cards. Sure and the girl wasn’t stupid, so what was the problem?

Yotsuba Shigure was in Noriko’s class, so perhaps he knew a bit about the girl. Because he excelled at charms, Siobhan decided that if she couldn’t solve the problem tonight she’d send him an owl—or whatever type of creature they used to send post around here. She still hadn't figured that out. Reiji might also know a thing or two about Noriko, considering that he was in her class as well, and he'd proven himself quite helpful on other occasions. Siobhan sighed. Being new was so difficult sometimes.

She lifted her left hand to study her wristwatch. It was six o’clock, straight up. Noriko should be arriving at any moment.

Somedays the it seemed the world spinned in the wrong direction, and Noriko could only run to try and keep up with it before being swept away into the past. This was just such a day. Hadn't she specifically asked Keri-sensei to work with her on charms, she'd even asked for this day, and now the planet seemed to be working against her. Sprinting down the hall, much like giving the illusion of flying, Nori reprimended herself for being late.

She pulled herself to a stop and saw that the world was still moving by too quickly as she had missed the door by a good two. Walking back to the correct enterance she mustered up her courage and gave a light knock against it. Do not do things that would make you seem foolish here.

Siobhan lifted her head at the light tap on the door. She stood and crossed the room. It appeared that the girl wasn’t as late as Siobhan had feared she’d be.

“Come in,” Siobhan said with a bright smile as she slid the door open. “Konbanwa, Noriko-chan. Are you ready to begin?” After returning to her desk, Siobhan picked up her wand and held out the feather to the girl.

"Konbanwa Keri-sensei." Noriko bowed deeply before entering the room. "Hai I am ready to attempt the troublesom defective spells. Forgive my moments of not being here at the correct time. It would seem the world span the wrong way." Drawing out her wand she eyed the feather dubiously. So very often it had eluded her charms and merely sat where it was lain.

"I hope that I have not found myself troubling you here this evening."

“Oh, no, Noriko-chan. You’re not any trouble at all,” Siobhan tried to assure the girl. “Here.” She set the feather down on a desktop. “Let’s start with a very simple levitation charm. I’m sure you’ve done this before, but I just want to see what level your skills are at.

“Remember, the proper wand movement is a swish-and-flick. The incantation is wingardium leviosa.”

Charms were pretty much hit or miss for Noriko. Somedays she could nail the spells and somedays well, she just didn't seem to find the right movements or words to have the spell working in the most proper way. Still, she'd been decent enough so far with her grades, luck seemed to run on her side in that matter.

Pointing her wand at the still feather she did the movement, it was a bit over exagerrated with an extra curl of the wand before the 'flick'. "Wingardium leviosa." She almost whispered it. The feather gave a half-hearted attempt to lift but remained stationary. Frowning, Nori gave it another shot, "Wingardium leviosa." Another wand movement and the feather began to rise. "Yata!"

"That is how I do the charms most often, sometimes yes, sometimes. no."

“Hmmmm. I think I see the problem,” Siobhan said. “You’ve added an extra ‘swish’ before your ‘flick’. Try again, and you might give your incantation a little bit more punch. The feather probably thinks you don’t mean what you say, and it’s not going to do anything it doesn’t have to.” She demonstrated the movement with her wand as she spoke, then stood back to watch the young girl’s second attempt.

"Really?" Funnily enough, Noriko had never really thought that maybe she needed to take more force with the feather. It seemed like a logical solution to her present situation. It was so nice to have a instructor who spoke in terms she found the appropriate way. Raising her wand she did her best to preform the proper movements as Siobahn had demonstrated. "Wingardium leviosa!" It was more like a cheer than a command but none the less the feather rose higher and higher following her wand movements.

"Ah! It works Keri-sensei!"

"Congratulations!" Siobhan exclaimed. She clapped her hands together in applause for the girl’s accomplishment. “Now then, what shall I have you practise next? Levitation is a fairly simple charm. I think you need something more on the level of your skills.” Thoughtfully tapping her finger against her chin, Siobhan moved to her desk and began to rifle through a stack of books.

“I’ve got it!” Siobhan slammed the book closed and pointed her wand at the feather. She muttered an incantation to transfigure it into a toad, and reached out a hand to catch the creature when it began to fall. The toad croaked in protest as Siobhan set it on the desk in front of Noriko.

“Now,” she said, “I want you to perform a silencing charm on this toad. Just point your wand at it, and say silencio.”

Fuu, these kinds of charms, the ones that would seem to be easier, always were the ones that made Noriko have the most difficulty. It would be so very not happy if she could not execute this one charm properly.

Taking her wand up, she pointed at the toad and cried out, "Silencio!" But nothing happened other than the toad mocking her with a great noise. "I believe the spell is defecting from its proper nature in the way that it will not work Keri-sensei." There was a serious downcast look on her face, which was almost alarming as Nori was normally always on an even level.

Siobhan pursed her eyebrows. “Hmmm, I believe that was my fault, Noriko-chan,” she said after a moment. “I told you to point your wand, but it works better if you jab it at your subject, like this.” She forcefully poked her wand at the toad. “Silencio!” The toad looked up at her with a mixture of resignation and reproach in its eyes as Siobhan reversed the charm.

“Now, you try, Nori-chan. I know you can do it: I’ve seen you perform far more difficult spells during class. Don’t worry,” she said, taking in the downcast look on her student’s face. “You have plenty of time to learn these things.”

Keri-sensei made it look so easy, of course there was the matter of her being an instructor that would potentially help her, but still, Noriko was un sure of the matter when it applied to herself. Doing what was in her naturally, she returned to her usual misty self and raised her wand once more. "Silencio." She jabed rather harshly toward the amphibian and only received a load croak in return. "You are an un-helpful, useless animal."

Embarassment crept up her cheeks, how shameful, to not be able to preform even a simple charm in front of her instructor.

"Hmmm." Siobhan cocked her head to the side as she studied the student and toad. "It looked like you did it right that time. Perhaps you need to concentrate more? Try again, but focus very strongly on the toad losing its voice."

Maybe in her head she didn't want to the toad to lose its voice? It was conceivable if not probable. Tapping her wand a few times against her palm, she aimed it at the toad with a concentrated look on her face. With a quick prod she tried again. "Silencio!"

Waiting several moments to see if the frog would even bother trying to croak in response, there were several seconds of held breath. Finally, the great toad opened its mouth but no sound came out. "Yata!"

Omedetou*!” Siobhan exclaimed as she applauded her student’s efforts. “I think you’re getting it, Noriko-chan.” She glanced at the clock. “Blimey! It’s getting late,” she said as she picked up the toad. She pointed her wand at it and mumbled the incantation to return it to its original state. “I think it’s time for me to let you go back to your dormitory,” she said. “But you’re doing very well. I would suggest that you continue to put in some extra time in the evenings, and make sure you let me know if you don’t understand the things I teach in class. Chances are, if you don’t understand it, there are others who don’t either. Does that sound fair?”

*Contratulations!

(OOC: I can’t think of anything else to add, can you?)
