This was one of the first movies i watched out of curiosity because of liking De Niro so much.
When i finished watching it was kinda speechless, and it effected me a bit, but after a few more watches i began to appreciate it and IMO its underated, Bobby should have got an oscar for his performance.

when i first saw the picture I did not know nothing about De Niro, and I didn't like him specially, I should say I hardly recognize him... but the film impressed me very much. I felt the anguish of that man and felt so sorry for him even if you don't like him, and could never forget the film, It is a piece of art, it touches you, it is moving. Scorsese is a wonderful director and De Niro a wonderful actor. One of the best movies of the history. De Niro got an oscar as best actor but Scorsese did not get any award, it was not fair, the award to best director went that year to Robert Redford for Ordinary People, a film nobody remeber today. But Ragging Bull is today a classic.

Yeah its definately a film you never can forget. And you are so right about feeling sorry for Jake even though he is not likable, i just kept forcing myself to see good in him, even when he was doing bad stuff.
Its quite heartbreaking really, watching how De Niro played him so well that it was like you could feel how frustrated he was and at the same time feel how frightened the others were of him.

Jake La Motta is a legend in his own right as well as an example how one man can suddenly have everything then let it slip away so easily. Its like he was punishing himself in the ring to try and pay for all the wrong he does in his life. For example, in the dressing room after that dodgy fight with Suga Ray "I've done alot of bad things Joey, maybe its all coming back to me." He knows it, and hates himself for hurting his wife Vicky, but he hides that with his stuborn pride, but allows himself to be punished when boxing in the ring.

The scene when he is in jail and hes crying and punching the wall, i cant watch that with getting upset, you can feel his pain and ditress right there and then. "I'm not an animal, they call me an animal, i'm not an animal! i'm not that bad.." hearing him say that is really upsetting :(

Overall, Jale La Motta isn't the nasty, wife-beating cockraoch, he is a man trapped inhimself, he's his own worst enemy, who unfortuantely has to take his pain out on others as well as himself.
