Ok, This wasnt really my kind of movie to be honest, It was more of a man film because I know I will go off on the wrong track with this and I dont condemn anyone who does hunt but I dont see how anyone could kill a Deer :( I dont put down the movie because it was alright, The acting was good, But as far as the script, It could have been better.. I thought there would be more action instead of a Wedding scene that lasted like 20 minutes.. The Wedding was nice and sweet and everything, God Bless Them but I just feel it shouldnt have been that long, You know.. I liked the movie but I just thought it couldve been better.. Robert was good though :) I usually always enjoy anything I see him in.. To make a point, I liked it, It just wasnt one of my favorites, And that is totally fine :)

Yeah, I kinda feel the same. It's good but not one of my faves and I don't like that long boring beginning

wow, i dont know. my parents saw this in the theater when it was relead in 1978 and said that people in the audience were crying and gasping and yelling at the screen during it. they bought the VHS a few years ago and i never really bothered to watch it although my mom always told me to because she loves christopher walken (who doesnt?). i recently sat down and decided to pay full attention to it, and i was completely blown away.

the film is so emotionally touching, so raw in its honesty. what a lot of people dont see, i think, is that the hunting scenes were meant to show how before the war, mike (de niro's character) was able to take out a deer with one shot, without even thinking about it, but after the war, he didn't have the heart to kill another living creature after all the death and destruction he saw in vietnam.

i dont think i have ever been more touched by a de niro scene than i was with the russian roulette ones in this movie. those two scenes literally had me on the edge of my seat, i was terrified of what was going to happen, and that rarely happens to me during films. de niro and walken were so authentic and real that i literally felt like i was in the room with them.

another thing i dont think people understand is that the long wedding scene served the purpose of introducing the viewer to all the different relationships in the movie. this film centers around friendship and courage, and what happens to those relationships in times of hardship and crisis. for instance, the scenes where mike is standing at the bar getting drunk while everyone else is dancing and having a good time with each other shows his reluctance to indulge, shows his solemn nature, his awkwardness. when he is dragged onto the dance floor by his friends, it shows that they love him no matter what and want to include him. when he is watching everyone dance, which i know is a long sequence, you see michael staring at linda (merly streep), and they give each other a bunch of weird, awkward glances which is a prelude to their strange relationship post-war.

the whole feeling of the film (besides the emotionally charged war scenes) is alienation and inner isolation. even before they go to war, you can see how many of the characters (especially michael) aren't really all there to begin with. the whole point of the long wedding scene is to set the viewer up with insight about the circle of friends so you can see how the war changes them and how, sadly, life goes on even after tragedy.

the movie wouldn't have had the same effect if it wasn't for the wedding scene. many people overlook the importance and depth of it all.

Uknow Howido, you have explained very well the wedding scene, I haven't realized before, but you are right, it is kind of introduction to the different characters.
I love the film, not about killing deers, it is a shame, but it is a nice film.
The only thing I found is that it is a men movie, all about their friendship, the jokes, the hunting, like girls were not important to them.
And also the friendship between De Niro and Walkem seemed too exaggerated, sometimes it seems they are in love with each other.
The nude scene of De Niro, of course I enjoyed - and how - but it was like it was made just to show De Niro nice body, It did not make any sense to me. But Thanks Michael Cimino, for doing it.

uknow howido, I agree with everything you said..........cant believe some of the other comments, this is a great story great cast & well acted, the scene with de niro and walken playing russian roulette is probably the most intensely acted scene ive ever witnessed on film.........the introduction to all the characters through the wedding of nicky gives you a feeling towards them all & makes it all the more emotional towards the end, now I dunno about anyone else but I love all my friends especially my best mate whom if we were in the same situation as nicky & mike would probably probably be as emotional if not worse, as for deer getting shot I have more of a problem with the human loss at the end.
