Hi all, I am just wondering how it is possible to become involved in the Display Team? I joined RPFS because it is the only fighter squadron with it's own display team - which gives mr everything i really want in one place!! So my question is - how to I get involved?

Thanks

I'm part of the display team, and right now we are not doing anything. Like above, we are kind of at a stand still. But I think the more members we have the better off we are on getting something started.

Hope to see you in the air.

Well- if the display team does pick-up again with additional members then i'll definately be involved.

How many members do you, Talon, think we need for the team to make it work?

Thanks

oh, gosh... i'd say 4 max, but it's not my thing until the Dm or zeus say it is. i'd probably only use 4 to do a very simple diamond or a bomb burst or something of the like... more complex than that=lag.

Talon you can run with this as you wish, you're General after all!!! You can certainly consult with Zeus or I (or both) as you see fit, but I don't wish to hold anything back. I suggest you guys just start practicing now with the current F18, until the one we're working on is done and ready to go. I don't think we need to wait since there definitely seems to be an interest. Perhaps Talon you can designate a co-leader so that there's always someone actively in charge doing things. I'll be sure to add this to the teams list. I think anybody expressing an interest should be allowed to participate. thats my three cents (cuz its more than two ; )

right-o... but... if you do it that way you'll have the whole team on the list. EVERYONE will say they want in, but few will fly well enough or put out for it. Obviously, we also couldnt use everyone. it would have to be based on skill, and unfortunately, connection speed. no dialup demo flyers. wink.gif I didnt know you were part of the display team, DsD? (technically, there's no official display team yet anyway. there should be...)

I'd look into zyb3z or vapor as a co-leader. But i don't know how well you fly, sbraders, or a few others of you.

if you can hold a tight diamond in any of the 3 following positions, meaning inside of plane-length WITHOUT lag, then youre probably good enough. and then we need a leader, someone who flies smoothly and precisely, right where and when we need them to, at a constant speed if possible. leading is HARD, and you especially need to be lag-free. I prefer following anyway, since that's what i'm better at.

a few basic formations/maneuvers you should be able to complete...

diamond, echelon, trail, inverse ladder, chevron

static roll, bomb burst downward/upward, sequence break, diamond break, trail-to-diamond, scissor pass (scissors and other standard terms in general), synchro pass, the overused corkscrew, a four/eight point roll, and a knife-edge pass.

and please, for God's sake, learn how to use the Fast mode. biggrin.gif

i guess teams should be picked fairly soon, so we can figure out who can do what, where to put people, who "starts" and who is a backup... etc, and have time to practice and perfect a routine for the upcoming Acro show.

Have SUB teams. Team Alpha Team Bravo ect (so they dont mish mash with our other names) someone should try a heli team. That is my 4 cents.

sounds cool. sub teams sounds good, but sub positions would be better, since usually we'll only need to add at most a couple guys when others are gone.

i can fly a helo, but have no idea why you'd want a team for it? o_o maybe a solo display...

I would suggest putting someone who you and others know how they fly in this role; this benefits a team anyday - to have a great knowledge of what the leader is like!
Personally, i can lead, as in the Virtual Midnight Hawks, but someone who has been around for longer would be more suited to any leader position!.......in my opinion......

And in reference to the heli team - If we had enough good heli pilots then a team could be created - this beats a solo display anyday
If you want to see the sort of thing a heli team can do - i saw these only two days ago - the teams are very good!

I "was" in the "display" team. When it was decided that it would go back up, I jumped on but it kind of fell through, but now it looks like it will be kicking back up. But the entire time I really wasn't a member, simply because of my connection speed. 56K is EVIL.

So it is more of a was instead of an is.

oh... 56k... i dunno if that would work so well. any kind of lag will KILL a good formation.

?! was that a constructive comment? or am i reading it wrong... hmm.

sorry, sb, i didnt see your post up there. i'd consider you for leading simply because you are part of a display team already, but technically we ought to have tryouts of sorts. at which point i'd say no dialup, though.

man, those blue eagles are AWESOME. i had no idea.

Whatever happens i need to get a little practice in using an F-18.......i've been flying Hawks for the last month in practice for my team and the Hawk is much slower and handles very differently to an F-18. I also offer to help in designing the display set for the team. I can make it aslong as needed, for example the Virtual Midnight Hawks almost have a full 15 - 20minute display working.......its just we dont have enough current the pilots yet..........

I'd be epic if we could get a heli team working - 1. it is impressive, 2. it hasn't been done for YSFlight yet!

Yea, amazingly enough, people still do have dialup. Might be a good idea to test those with slower connections, just to make sure nobody gets excluded who really wants to try out.

I would be interested in being a helo team, I've been practicing the AH-1 quite a bit. And you're right, I don't think its been done before in YS. Leave it up to the RPFS to break ground on new stuff!!! WOOT. but of course, if we have more interest in it, I don't object to it.

Yep, some of us do still have dial up, execpt that I cannot afford high speed internet. I use something called NoCharge, so as you can tell by the name, there is no fee for it. It is acctuly a really nice ISP.

A helo team would be REALLY cool to have. Just even a delta formation with helicopters would be impressive I think.

I'm going to make my suggestion - we should test it for lag but if all the team (whoever they may be...) have good fast internet then i suggest a 6-ship display team. The reason i suggest this is because it allows for the following - it is similar to what i intend to do with my team elsewhere:

1. They can fly a Delta Formation as a full team formation

2. It can be split in two - a solo pair; this leaves a nice diamond formation once the solo pilots split

3. It gives the opportunity for more people to fly - and solo pilots can be rotated, giving all the opportunity to do formation and solo flying.

(of course this all depends on lag.....which we can hopefully avoid)

I have adapted a manoeuvre that i am developing for the Virtual Midnight Hawks and will split a 6-ship formation into a solo-pair and a diamond formation.
- I have titled the two formations as "Duo" and "Phoenix" for the plan.

I have my rather complicated plan - here
I have not included it in the post because it is rather tall - 2693px!

My other thought is that we get a commentator who can use the message system to introoduce the moves and talk the crowd through the display....this allows the pilots to concentrate on flying totally

I'm just throwing this idea in. Thanks
