Finchy Posted on Apr 29 2006, 05:54 PM
On entering the second floor, Finchy noticed a stature of what looked like a pokemon. Yet he’d never seen this pokemon before. He moved closer to it and observed it. There was writing underneath it, and he blew the dust off it. ‘Mewtwo’ it read. Finchy didn’t understand what it meant. After staring at it for a few minutes, he noticed that there seemed to be some sort of switch on the left side of it. Inquisitively, he decided to push it, and the wall ahead of him parted, revealing an open room with a desk in the middle.

“What the hell is this place?” he thought.

On the desk was a book of some sort. He opened it to find it was a diary.

‘Entry 1 : 27th May

The experiment is going well, better than expected infact. The gene-splicing is ahead of schedule and working perfectly, it’s starting to take form. Soon, it will awaken and it shall be studied more.’

He turned the page.

‘Entry 2 : 5th June

The experiment is awake. We have decided to call it ‘Mewtwo’. We have found that it is capable of speech and has telekinetic capabilities. Research is continuing on it’

He turned the page once again.

‘Entry 3 : 12th June

The experiment has turned evil, it’s broken out of it’s containment tube. There’s nothing we can do to stop it. We overlooked one thing: giving it a kind heart. Without it, it doesn’t know right from wrong. We never thought this would happen. Now we can only hope that we haven’t released such a creature on the world.’

He turned the page once again to find that it was empty. He scrolled through the entire diary and found they were the same way. He suddenly felt alone, and turned round quickly. A ruffling noise was made towards the entrance. Finchy drew up his shirt and placed his hand on his pokeball. Suddenly, a red creature burst into view. It was furry like a wolf with long tail hair. It stared directly at him and in fear; Finchy lobbed his pokeball infront of him. Charmander burst out and stood his ground, growling at the wolf-like creature.

“Charmander, scratch it!” Finchy shouted. Charmander obeyed and launched himself at his opponent catching it right on the back. The wolf like creature leapt backwards in confusion and growled too.

“Well done Charmander,” he said confidently. “Now scratch it again!”

Once again, Charmander obeyed. But this time, the pokemon dodged the attack. Suddenly, it drew in it’s breath and howled loudly. Then, following the howl came a huge barrage of flames. Charmander, shocked, jumped straight onto the floor infront of him. The fire missed him and hit the diary Finchy had been reading moments before. It was turned to ashes in seconds.

“Scratch!”

Charmander, reluctant to do so incase he was hit with more flames, ran at the pokemon and scratched it right across the face once again. This time, he continued to do so until the pokemon was sent packing along the tiled floor into the wall. It’s eyes stared at Finchy one more time before drooping down to the floor.

Finchy withdrew Charmander and stayed staring at the downed pokemon for a few minutes, then back at the diary. When he was content that the pokemon wasn’t going to get back up again, he ran on, pokeball in hand, down the hall.

He found himself in a room with machinery to each side of him. Dead ahead of him were test tubes. Most were still intact, but one was smashed up and broken. He took it that that was what the diary meant by ‘Containment Tube’.

While observing everything, he heard another ruffling noise by the entrance. He was ready to throw out his pokeball when he found it was only Blaine.

“Ah, glad to see you’re on your toes then!” He laughed loudly. “I saw a collapsed Vulpix down the hall; I take it that was your doing?”

Finchy nodded gingerly.

“Ah, glad to see your father was right; you do seem to be able to handle yourself well!”

Finchy decided not to tell Blaine about the diary he found, thinking it might be best to keep it to himself.

“Well, I saw an odd pokemon down the hall to the right. I didn’t manage to catch up with it’ I’m getting a bit too old for that. However, I’m sure you’d be able to see it again Finchy! Good luck!” and with that, he strolled out of the room.

Finchy was about to leave when it confronted him. A small orangey-red dog with what looked like burn marks on it’s body stood there, eyeing him up and growling fiercely. This was what they were after.

*

Without thinking, Finchy tossed the ball onto the floor ahead of him and out came Charmander, ready to battle once again. This time though, Houndour struck first. He sped towards charmander and tackled him to the floor. Finchy was amazed at the speed in which the pokemon attacked.

“Charmander!” he shouted. “Come on, get up and scratch it like you did to Vulpix!”

He winced and got up, growling more than ever before at his foe. With all his power, he lunged at Houndour and went right for it’s face. But instead of hitting it’s foe, Charmander crashed into the floor as Houndour dodged to the right. Taking the initiative, Houndour bit into Charmander’s leg, making him send out an ear-splitting cry of pain. Finchy was dumbstruck at the power of this pokemon, but he wasn’t going to let up.

“Charmander!” He yelled. “I know you can do this Charmander. You’re more powerful than that stupid thing!”

With this, his eyes began to get wider, and his expression changed to anger.
“You’ve got it in you to take that pokemon down! Do it Charmander! Scratch him!”

Charmander sent out a sudden roar that scared not only Finchy but the Houndour that was chewing Charmander’s leg. He let go and stepped back, clearly shocked and scared. Charmander now had a menacing look on his face. With unbelievable speed, he burst into Houndour and started scratching him to pieces, Houndour was letting out screams and shrieks at every opportunity, trying to get Charmander to stop clawing at his face. In the end, Houndour flew back through the entrance onto the floor. Finchy and Charmander both raced up to it. To his surprise though, the floor gave way and Houndour was sent plunging to the floor. He hadn’t realised how high the fall was between the first and second floor, and Houndour was hanging by a plank of wood. If Houndour fell, he’d undoubtedly die.

Charmander burst forward to try and save the Houndour, but Finchy held him back. If he went in, he could make the whole floor collapse sending the two of them to their deaths. This was a risk that Finchy didn’t want to take. Instead, he looked around at anything he could use to hoist him up with. While doing this, Charmander burst forward and onto the falling part of the floor.

“No! Get back here!”

It was too late. Charmander had already edged onto the floor and let it’s tail down to help the poor pokemon up. Houndour couldn’t reach, so Charmander let his tail down even lower. With the floor now completely falling away, Houndour did the only thing it could do; it jumped up and bit into Charmander’s tail, grabbing on tightly. Charmander yelped and dived away with Houndour still attached to his tail. Houndour suddenly let go, and looked at Charmander who was laying completely still on the floor. Finchy was dumbstruck.

“Charmander!”

Houndour recoiled, still looking at the pokemon that had just saved it’s life. It looked a lot less menacing now, even a little caring. Finchy, who now had tears emerging from his eyes, noticed that Houndour was tugging at his bag.

“Get off me!” he shouted, not even giving it a look.

Houndour then jumped onto Finchy and yanked his bag off his shoulders. As the bag hit the floor, Houndour unzipped one of the pockets and a potion fell out.

“Yes!” he said. “Well done Houndour!”

Finchy ran over, picked up the potion and sprayed it on Charmander’s tail and back. Suddenly, the fire on his tail, which had been dimmer than usual, burst into action. Charmander got up dizzily, and looked at Houndour wearily. He seemed content that he had saved his life. Houndour edged his way over to Charmander and they both stared at eachother for what seemed like an eternity. Then, suddenly, Houndour kicked out and sent Charmander across the room. He crashed into the wall. Finchy stared at Houndour in shock, not able to believe that it had just attacked the pokemon that had saved it’s life. Charmander on the other hand, without it’s master’s consent, let out a massive beam of flame, much like the Vulpix had down the hall. It struck the astounded Houndour right in the gut and sent him backwards in pain. The two pokemon now looked exhausted and hurt. They then slowly walked to the middle of the floor again and stared eachother dead in the eye. One of them was going down, Finchy thought.

Then, out of the blue, Houndour tried to bite Charmander. What happened next was unbelievable. The two were only an inch or two away from eachother when Houndour launched it’s attack, but Charmander somehow ducked out the way and retaliated with some sort of move that Finchy had never seen in his life. Charmander’s mouth began to glow, and a white hot beam of pure magma burst out and struck Houndour. He was sent flying back into the wall, leaving a dent the size of a large dinner plate in it. He then fell out of the wall and onto the floor. Both Finchy and the completely exhausted Charmander stood there watching. Houndour didn’t move. Finchy then felt a tug on his bag. It was Charmander poking at the pokeball part of the bag. Finchy reached in, bought one out and threw it at Houndour. He then turned into a ray of white light and was sucked into it.

It rolled once… rolled a second time… and then a third. A small ding was heard and the pokeball lay still. Suddenly, Blaine and Finchy’s father burst into the room.

“Finchy!” shouted his dad. “Wh-What happened?”

Blaine saw the pokeball, and his face turned into a smile.

“Well done Finchy! Well done!”

His father stared, seeing that he had caught the pokemon too.

“Finchy… you did it.”

Finchy walked over and picked up the pokeball. He examined it, then stuck it into his belt.

“Finchy, he’s all yours. Yours to keep.”

And for the first time in an hour, Finchy smiled too. Blaine turned his attention to Charmander, who was sitting on the floor, exhausted.

“I think we better get these two to a Pokemon Centre, don’t you?”

Once both Charmander and Houndour were refreshed, they were ready to leave.

“Great meeting you Finchy. I hope one day our paths may cross again.”

Blaine retreated to his gym, leaving Finchy and his dad standing outside.

“Well done Finchy. You realise you’re now officially a pokemon trainer. It… it makes me so proud to say those words son.”

He smiled and hugged Finchy warmly. His father was right; he was a real Pokemon Trainer.

The Quest for Houndour

Finchy was no ordinary boy. From a young age he’d been around pokemon. He’d always played with them and looked after them, and in return they did the same for him. But, as he grew older and more mature, he was determined to be a proper pokemon trainer and to own his own pokemon. Nothing was going to get in his way. His father appreciated his goal, having had the same one when he was that age. His father had given him one of his old pokemon; charmander. Finchy now knew what he was to be: a fire pokemon trainer. After packing his bags with his new friend charmander, he was to set off on an adventure, searching the Kanto region for any and all fiery pokemon.

*

Finchy woke up with a start. His alarm clock had gone off long ago but he was never one to hear it. This always made him late to school, but he needn’t worry about it on a weekend.

He rose out of bed slowly, continually trying to wipe the sleep out of his eyes. He then heard his stomach rumble and gurgle and decided that it was time to go downstairs and have some breakfast.

Finchy was a medium sized boy with dark brown hair and large brown eyes. He was just like any other kid in Viridian City, except he had a fiery ambition like no other. His mum had always told him that he inherited it from his father; he had travelled the region for pokemon which he’d been told was not something for the week hearted. His older brother William had decided to follow in his father’s footsteps too and went out searching for pokemon too. The last letter they got from him was sent out from Lavender town where he’d gone to search for ghost pokemon in the famous Lavender Tower. Ghost pokemon had always frightened Finchy, hence why he was never very close to Will.

As he ambled down the stairs, he heard voices from the kitchen. His mum and dad were up much earlier than he was and were discussing something. He heard the word ‘Finchy’ in their discussion and decided to slowly pull up to the kitchen door and listen in.

“But Chris, we can’t let our son on an adventure like that,” she argued. “We’d be alone in this house! Will has already gone; you know how I felt about that. I can’t bear to have both our sons out of our reach!”

“We must though, his eyes have been set on a pokemon adventure since he was young and we can’t crush them.”

There was a shuffling of feet and he knew his mum had conceded defeat.

“Alright,” she said, not sounding totally convinced. “I guess he can as long as he keeps in touch.”

With that, he opened the door and his parents sprung round to look at him.

“Morning.” I said casually, trying to make it seem that he hadn’t heard their conversation.

“Morning son.” His father said.

His mum smiled, looked at her feet and carried on cleaning the table. Even if he hadn’t have heard the conversation in the first place, he would have been able to tell that something was wrong. He fetched his cereal, put it in a bowl, added the milk and sat down across from his dad. He was reading the local newspaper. On the back was a picture of a Houndour with the title ‘Houndour escapes from lab’. As his dad turned the page, his curiosity obviously showed as his dad stopped reading and looked at him.

“Something got your interest?”

He turned the newspaper round to the back and saw the picture.

“Houndour is a fire pokemon ya know,” he said seeing Finchy’s eyes grow wider.

“I’m taking a trip over to Cinnabar to see what’s up. Blane the local gym leader is helping to locate the pokemon and invited me over to see with him. Me and him go way back, so I’m sure he won’t mind you tagging along.”

“That’d be great!” Finchy said, making no effort to cover up his excitement.

Chris stood up and laid his newspaper on the table.

“Better hurry up son,” he muttered as he turned around. “We’ll be leaving in half an hour.”

After his father had left the kitchen, Finchy burst up the stairs into the bathroom where he took a quick shower and dressed in some of his best clothes. After checking his appearance 3 times, he leapt down the stairs to see his dad standing in the hallway.

“All ready then Finchy?” said his dad with a grin on his face.

“Yeah,” said Finchy with a grin on his face too. “Ready as I’ll ever be.”

His dad came away from the wall and held up a backpack. By the looks of things, it was full of pokeballs and potions.

“Since you’ve got your own pokemon, Blaine thought you might be able to help us stop this blighter of a pokemon. What you say son? You ready for that?”

Finchy’s jaw dropped.

“I… I’m helping you catch it?!” he stuttered.

“Certainly, and Blane says if you catch it, it’s yours, the lab’s got loads of them. Think of it as a reward for your doings.” His father said, clearly happy that Finchy was so excited.
“But don’t forget, that’s if you catch it, if him or I catch it, then it’ll be returned to the lab.”

Finchy’s expression fell a bit, but he was still determined in his mind to catch it.

“Then I guess I’ll have to catch it then, won’t I?” Finchy said confidently.

“Very true Finchy, very true.”

With that, they both picked up their bags and strolled out the door. Before going out the door, Finchy double checked the belt round his waist to check if he had charmander. He was definitely going to need him.

*

Cinnabar Island was a bustling city with obviously more activity due to the breakout at the lab. The lab, he could see, was right on the north of the island, not far away from the local pokemon centre. To the east of the Island was the Pokemon Gym where a balding white haired man stood. He wore a white, expensive suit with small glasses on the end of his nose.

“That’s him,” whispered his dad. “Let’s go see him.”

The two of them marched over where Blaine greeted Finchy’s father with a shake of the hand like two old friends. His attention then turned to Finchy himself.

“Ah, you look much like your father,” He said in an older, hoarse sort of voice. “Your father says you possess a great love for pokemon. That’s why I invited you here with your father Finchy.”
Finchy wasn’t quite sure how to respond to this.

“Thanks.”

“Hah, now the greetings are out the way, let us find this dastardly pokemon! People in the town say they saw the Houndour burst through the market and into the old, Abandoned Mansion on the west side.”

Finchy noticed his father wince as he mentioned the Abandoned Mansion. He thought for a moment, but decided it might be best not to ask.

“We will all go separately okay? There isn’t a very strong pokemon presence in the mansion, so I wouldn’t worry about it Finchy. As long as you have your charmander, you’ll be fine.”

Finchy nodded and they all walked over to the west side and to the entrance of the mansion. From the outside it didn’t look too bad; merely a bit worn. He took it that it’d be worse on the inside.

“Everyone understand what they’re doing?”

He and his father nodded.

“Great! Then let us go in. Good luck!” he laughed, and walked in.

“Finchy, I want you to take the second floor, alright? I’ll take the first.” Said his father, sounding concerned.

“Sure thing.”

Finchy made his way inside and was greeted with the smell of burnt wood. The inside was a complete mess. The wall’s had light shining through, the ceiling was battered and falling and he had the mysterious feeling that he was being watched. Despite this, he wondered off to the staircase ahead of him. Some steps were missing, but he still managed to clamber his way to the top.
