From time to time I hang around on ebay, snapping up the odd bargain here and there. One thing I don't snap up, though, are Citadel's old range of Villagers & Townsfolk.
The reason is simply because the prices they command regularly take them out of my league.
Naturally, that gets me thinking. While some wargames manufacturers do produce a few figures (I started my new collection with some of Gripping Beast's civilians, and they're a nice range), for the most part we're left with proxies or paper folks to represent the beggars, street performers, tavern regulars, traders, local nobility, herdsmen, peasant labourers and expert hirelings that our heroes meet regularly in our games. It seems to me that a new range of such personalities would serve a demand and should sell quite well, if the prices they command second-hand are anything at all to go by.

I agree 100%. Civilians would be most welcome.

Absolutely - the only decent range of civilians out there is from Reaper but there juat aren't enough "bland, commoners" - they're all stereotype blacksmith, grave digger, prostitute types.
A range of 'tavern patrons' would be good, non armed/combat posed hirelings and farmer, merchant types.
All in AD&D style of course.

The range already exists really, the Hirelings and Henchmen, it just needs filling out...
Hasslefree do some nice tavern patrons and a few villager types, although it's unlikely that kev will expand that range any time soon.

It does seem odd that the old Citadel villagers go for stupid prices on e-bay. I always assumed it was due them being rare collectables. But maybe it is due to the lack of decent modern alternatives.

Bit of both I suspect, also, they're just damn fine minis that have stood the test of time!

Those lead adventure ones are nice, but only the beggars fit what i think of as "Fantasy" looking ie. Medieval. The others are more late Renaissance style - 16-17th Century. I use the Perrys Crusader un-armed pilgrims, which fit nicely into my D&D campaign. They would look ridiculously small vs Reaper mind you. I don't have many of their humans as they are mahoosive. They also do armed pilgrims and Muslim civies. http://www.perry-miniatures.com/images/cu27.jpg

I have many of the Megaminis sets myself, for the same reason - cheap and useful. Some of them are actually quite nice, but in general they are, well, mediocre.
On the plus side you get some types that are very useful for RPG situations but hard to come by, such as angry beggars and even a rat catcher (I paint minis for both old school D&D and WFRP).
Well worth a purchase, I would say. Cheap international shipping as well.

Sculpted along similar lines to the Bruegelberg minis, and probably more appropriate to WHFRP than straight D&D, are the Alionas "Civilists": http://www.alionas.com/shop/shopmichel_onl...en.html?c~1.251 Some of the minis in their other fantasy lines would also work as townsfolk. Jeff

What scale are those Alionas miniatures? They look a little smaller, as though they were about 25mm scale rather than 28mm...
