D&D v 5.0

Its official. WotC are working on 5th edition D&D, to be released next year.

This will coincide with Hobbit fantasy goodness! Woot, woot!


Seriously though, I have played every version of D&D and I look forward to seeing which direction it goes in next. I just hope it feels more, well like D&D, than the current edition.

Saying that I like using miniatures (we never used to use them in old AD&D games).

Wow, maybe they will go retro and re-introduce a revised edition of AD&D. Then again maybe not. Some of the Gygax 'rules' are just not meant to be fixed

I've had hours of fun trying to 'fix' things like grapple attacks, knock downs, etc.....Gygax was always happy for the 'rules' to be adapted, rather than turned into a tactical simulation covering all eventualities.

I read through some of the available info and there are a few statements about trying to move back toward the game's earlier forms. Mostly they say they are trying to make all previous editions compatible, with different sections of rules and levels of detail being considered optional. Maybe I'll like this, but I won't know until I see it. I might have to go to a promo game when it's available.

Sounds like they're trying to bring back together the "fractured D&D community"?

Can't see how they're going to do it really myself, you can't please all of the people all of the time.

If they're trying to please the various D&D audiences all at the same time,I think this edition is going to be a Frankenstein's monster,just a miss-mash of all editions rolled into one big well-constructed mess. I think if they're really trying to get the fan's opinion on what D&D should be,it says they've done a poor job so far. But that's just my opinion,I could be wrong,regardless,if it's D&D related and it doesn't have the TSR logo on the front,I don't usually bother with it.

Ha - Andy's post made me smile. I remember playing AD&D at school. There was this 6th former who used to be our DM. He threw a huge Kobold tribe at us and we were all about 5th level so we were really cocky and just waded in without any finesse.

The DM's response - he made around 100 kobolds throw down their weapons and start to GRAPPLE us all. It nearly ended up as a TPK situation.
I've always had a healthy respect for Kobolds since then!

I'm hopeful that Hasbro will find a way to enable support of older editions, while making 5e relevant to pre-3.x gamers too---whether that's directly in the design of the edition (about which I'm skeptical, but open-minded also), or in some license that enables older edition support beyond leveraging the OGL. I'm not sure that combination is a threadable needle for Hasbro, though....

Maybe this is only in my head, but I think the short timing of the announcement after 4th Edition demonstrates the failure of that edition. So much for trying to make D&D like WOW. Honestly, it was pretty obvious WOTC was trying to make D&D easier to transition into a computer game. Bioware and Obsidian had to limit the rules significantly to make their games; although, I still loved all of them. Just goes to show that D&D needs to be played as a pen & paper game to be truly appreciated.

4th edition was the first time I didn't give the game a chance. I read about it and didn't like what I was hearing so I gave it a pass. From the looks of it a lot of D&D fans did the same thing.

I am not surprised they are trying to put it in the past and move on.

I will still watch for 5th edition the way I would hope that a remake of an old film could improve on the original. It's rare, but it happens.
