Title: New to Otherworld
Description: What I am painting
Maglok - June 22, 2011 08:11 AM (GMT)
Hello Otherworld,
So I am an avid collector of mini's. I try to always paint my own instead of using anything pre-painted. So far I have mainly Reaper and Games Workshop. Then someone linked me to Otherworld and I must admit the quality is awesome.
So far I have some stirges, an owlbear, dire wolves, a vrock, a carrion crawler ©, two shadows and giant rats.
I figured let's start small so I painted up the rats. I am not a great painter, but this is how they turned out.

I am now trying to put the carrion crawler together. The thing is, the holes, the tens of tentacles and feet. This is really quite annoying.
anakeron - June 22, 2011 08:50 AM (GMT)
welcome aboard :)
and for the carrion , John Pickford have earned his "master torturer " rank i think : ;)
AndyM - June 22, 2011 10:15 AM (GMT)
Yes welcome.
The rats came out great. I loved the extra detail on the bases. I have 2 sets of these and 2 sets of the were-rats. They work well as a team of course! Your dungeon set also looks great. I'm looking forward to seeing some of the other models you have to paint. Keep up the good work.
Yes that crawler takes some putting together, but it's worth it in the end! John won a prize for 'the most multiparts in one model' :P
Michka - June 22, 2011 04:38 PM (GMT)
Terrific looking Rats, and I don't get to say that very often.

Wow. If that's what you call "not great" I need to re-evaluate what great is. You got skills Maglok.
Maglok - June 23, 2011 08:28 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the compliment. Though I know for a fact I layer maybe three layers together and my drybrushing never seems to blend very well. I ain't bad, but I am not near those people that spend so much time layering and layering. :)
I think I'll tackle the Owlbear next, maybe try that challenge. Don't think I'll have the time though.
kiltedyaksman - June 23, 2011 11:47 AM (GMT)
Looks good so far. Don't be afraid to ask folks questions and to study the pictures that people post. A picture is indeed worth a 1000 ideas when it comes to miniatures.
The carcass scavenger takes time. Only go at it when you are in the right mood. If you are frustrated by anything don't bother - you'll just bugger it.
I've got a floating eye here and the otyugh - but I'm not going near them until the time's right (meaning: children are far away).
Maglok - July 21, 2011 05:41 PM (GMT)
I got frustrated with the scavenger, so I worked on two ogres.
Here they are, goblin for scale.

"We smash goblin!"

"Oh no! Is goblin! Run!"
Ceowald - July 22, 2011 03:17 AM (GMT)
Well done! I like the rats and ogres very much. The ogre captions made me laugh too! Good luck with the scavenger, I've looked at that model and put it back a few times myself! Maybe when you paint yours i'll finish mine...
AndyM - July 22, 2011 09:02 AM (GMT)
Nice work. The discarded shield is a nice touch.
Goblins can be scary too you know. We can't see his 'war' face as he has his back to the camera ;)
Maglok - August 27, 2011 09:21 PM (GMT)
Here are some stirges. They look a bit better out of the spotlight. I am not all that awesome with very tiny models like that.
Algolei - August 27, 2011 10:22 PM (GMT)
B) Nice.
My nephew painted his stirges (which I gave him for Christmas) orange and pink. Orange. And pink. Together.
Yours are much better!
Maglok - August 29, 2011 07:07 PM (GMT)
Pictures or it didn't happen! :)

omg my eyes :)
They do pop out rather nicely, you won't miss them buzzing around the gameboard.
Michka - September 2, 2011 04:36 PM (GMT)
I love the pink striges. Now I kinda want to re-paint a couple of mine in that scheme. Everyone says they're a pain. Why not have them be painful to look at too.
Algolei - September 3, 2011 03:21 AM (GMT)
I cried when one of them killed my character. It felt so humiliating. How could I be surprised by something so fluorescent!
Maglok - September 5, 2011 07:24 AM (GMT)
You should get a t-shirt saying that "I got killed by a pink stirge and all I got was this lousy t-shirt"
Maglok - November 7, 2011 10:43 AM (GMT)
Painted up some Otherworld wolves and dire wolves.

Pictures aren't the best though.
I also painted up two more wolves from Reaper minis, but the quality on those just isn't even close to Otherworld. Props there.
Next I painted up my worms. I converted one to be a Grick (look it up).

You'll have to excuse the piss poor picture quality. I can't seem to find a real good way to light them all properly.
David Wasilewski - November 7, 2011 01:33 PM (GMT)
The Grick is excellent! Well done.
There's an idea Richard - a pack of alternative heads to alter them into Gricks?
Dave
Uthoroc - November 7, 2011 03:21 PM (GMT)
Beautiful.
What are you using for your bases? The wolves' bases look self-made (and very nice to boot), but I'm unsure about the leeches. Are those pre-built?
Maglok - November 7, 2011 03:26 PM (GMT)
The worms come with those bases.
The wolves are custom, some sand, drybrushed, add in some sticks, stones and a bitta green fluff.

Ah, I didn't know that, thanks!
Catweazle - November 7, 2011 10:37 PM (GMT)
I've always liked the look of the OW wolves, but they've always seemed a bit big to me. A wolf is generally three feet or so to the withers*, some particularly big specimens being nearly four feet, but these beggars must be close to five.
Still, no doubt some lost lineage of tall wolves will appear in my game world at some point. Owlbears and the like won't hunt themselves.
*Most people think of a German Shepherd as a big dog, but they rarely hit two and a half feet to the withers. Even my own, described by occasional passers-by as "huge", is only a touch over twenty-eight inches. Mind you, this is Staffie country.
AndyM - November 8, 2011 10:56 AM (GMT)
Nice wolves and the worms are great. Lovely conversion on the Grick. That's good thinking.
Maglok - November 8, 2011 12:18 PM (GMT)
@Catweazle: That is indeed true. They also come on bigger bases, but I based em down a notch. To be honest though, most wolves out there are rather big and Otherworld's are not the biggest by far. Reaper minis have a pair of wolves that are bigger by far. :) Not dire wolves either. ;)

Oh Ha ha. Like I'll never hear the last of this (and yes I know my response is very much overdue)
In all fairness to the wolves, it makes them a good size for goblins to ride.
Algolei - November 9, 2011 01:35 AM (GMT)
Plus when people think "wolves," they have something unrealistic in mind. They want their wolves big. Few people think it a heroic image to picture themselves fending off
a pack of wild Shelties. :P

Algolei - November 10, 2011 12:06 AM (GMT)
The hair and small size makes them AC 3. (That's old-school AC. New school would be AC 36 or so. )
Maglok - January 27, 2012 11:42 PM (GMT)
I finally found time to paint up my Otherworld shadows.

And here is a poor halfling about to die.
John - January 28, 2012 12:17 AM (GMT)
I love the way they seem to seep out of the bricks of your dungeon!
Finch - January 28, 2012 02:13 PM (GMT)
Your monochromatic approach suits these two. Nice.
David Wasilewski - January 28, 2012 05:30 PM (GMT)
These are awesome minis that really suit a simple but effective paint job - well done!
He's a halfling so I'd be cheering for the monsters I'm afraid!
Dave

I do agree! Down with our halfling overlords. :)
I had first painted them with light red highlights, which turned out... pink. I then added a whole slew of greys to correct that.
The minis are really awesome. I have several shadow-like minis and the Otherworld ones are simply put the best.
David Wasilewski - January 30, 2012 09:27 AM (GMT)
There's a reason why halfkings weren't allowed to go above level 8 in old school D&D you know - it enabled high level characters to go to the shires for their holidays and be able to trash the place without fear of local law enforcement :)
Just kidding, max levels for non humans was a daft idea. Hey, we've all reached 12th level, sorry you non humans, you're all just relegated to 'sidekick' roles?
Dave
AndyM - January 30, 2012 05:12 PM (GMT)
Great work on these guys. Shadows are actually hard to paint and I think you've don't a great job on these guys. Love the way they merge with the base. Very nice and perfect with your dungeon walls.
Algolei - February 2, 2012 08:31 PM (GMT)
Wow, those are nice shadows. When you say "shadow," people always think "they must be black!" But now that I think about it, shadows AREN'T black, they're just dim and vague. I think this may be paradigm-shifting for me.
Maglok - February 10, 2012 09:18 PM (GMT)
Thanks peeps, makes me feel less of a basic painter. :)
I painted a basic troll, but then I messed around with my camera for effects.

First of all a complete shot.

Nasty closeup

"Begone foul unde-... troll!"

"Me eat silly cleric!"
I have to say it is a pleasure to be able to drybrush a lot on shadows or trolls. I aim to try more of a painting and no drybrush on the rust monsters.
Algolei - February 11, 2012 03:25 AM (GMT)
Blonde trolls seem very...English.
David Wasilewski - February 11, 2012 11:05 AM (GMT)
Lovely, you got the pose just right, he's slightly leaning forwards, eager to feed! All that's missing is some saliva!
Blonde works - when I eventually get round to painting mine, I will try a blonde one too.
