Title: OG1 - Ogre Warrior WIP

John - June 8, 2010 10:48 AM (GMT)
Right, Richard has allowed me to add a WIP photo. I did warn you, it wasn't something you'd guess at, but I hope it's not a let down.

The model is designed to be a bit closer to the source illustration.

AndyM - June 8, 2010 10:59 AM (GMT)
Wow looks good.

Is this a new Ogre version?

John - June 8, 2010 11:02 AM (GMT)
It's as close as I can get to the mm illustration, although the weapons will be thicker for playing and casting reasons.

AndyM - June 8, 2010 11:07 AM (GMT)
Excellent work then - I think this looks really good, based on the MM picture. I personally don't like the current ogres, so I've not bought any. But I'd definitely buy this one. Will there be more than one variant? Ogre's usually come in groups...

John - June 8, 2010 11:11 AM (GMT)
At least 2, the second is at armature stage, so a brand new sculpt. Depending on how well received these are, there may be another pose and a tribal pack. I hope to finish the two in the next couple of weeks.

I'd like to note here, though, these are made with the greatest respect to Kev's work. Kev's models are his interpretation of the source, and were made in Otherworld's earlier days - these ones are as strict as I can make them to the mm illustrations (apart from the goofy feet), and not stylistic interpretations. Kev's have his own style and flavour stamped all over them, a style that was a great influence on my interest in painting and sculpting.

Cthulhu - June 8, 2010 01:37 PM (GMT)
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS!

So cool.

Yeah John!

This reminds me I have to put an order in.

Cthulhu - June 8, 2010 01:40 PM (GMT)
Also I NEVER would have guessed.

I agree. Kev is a very good sculptor and I like a lot of his work. Personally I just didn't like his OW Ogres. I will certainly be buying these guys, based on what you have done so far.

It was a nice suprise ;)

Grendel - June 8, 2010 01:58 PM (GMT)
WoooHooo! Ask about fire newts and get a new ogre instead. I love it! This ogre is going on the buy list. I'm a huge fan of realistic looking miniatures, and this looks like it'll fit the bill nicely. So, in that respect, Kev Adams was not my favorite sculptor...his stuff looks too cartoonish for my taste. Nice work John!

John - June 8, 2010 02:12 PM (GMT)
{blushes} thank you very much.
I'm just finishing off his hands, and he is done. I'll be starting No 2 this evening with a view to sending them both to Richard in two weeks time.

For your information, he is 45mm to the eyes (50mm to the top of the head) which is approx 92% of the size of the drawing in the MM. That's the model size BTW and does not take into account the fact that his knees are bent.

The only change we have made is to the feet. They will have normal humanoid feet, with five toes, and no wierd ankle thing. They will have pointy toenails though!

anakeron - June 8, 2010 02:16 PM (GMT)

nice work .
i was a bit partial on the 2 other head for the ogre but i liked the first one kev made , and the bugbear too :)

3 ogres now on the buying schedule.

now i need more bugbears !
because even hairy, smelly, nasty ,hungry monsters need some love ( and a small tribe range)

Holy crap...someone pinch me! *Tear of joy forms*

John - June 8, 2010 02:35 PM (GMT)
well, those ankles are wierd - how would he walk? Kev's solution was to make them more like bird legs, which is a sensible enough solution - but for any pose other than in the MM they just look wrong. And they only show one foot...

AndyM - June 8, 2010 03:49 PM (GMT)
'Normal' feet and ankles are best in my view - for an ogre. So this is looking even better IMHO :D

Can't wait to see the 2nd one. Looks like these guys are going to be a popular choice!

John - June 8, 2010 04:30 PM (GMT)
well, bar a few details and an adjustment to a bicep, he is done - I'll post a photo this evening.

John - June 8, 2010 08:45 PM (GMT)
here he is:

Looks great - another miniature I must have.

Thank you very much for posting it here.

John - June 8, 2010 09:02 PM (GMT)
You are most welcome :D

he needs a bit of spit and polish, and, Richard has just told me, nipples.

Grendel - June 8, 2010 09:16 PM (GMT)
Now THAT is an ogre! Absolutely phenomenal...I love the thick neck and sloping neanderthalish forehead. Great work, John...keep it up!

kiltedyaksman - June 8, 2010 10:39 PM (GMT)
This is outstanding!

I really like all the OW miniatures, the only exception being the chicken-feet ogres. This new ogre is a very nice surprise and a definite buy.

Very well done.

I disliked the old ogres to the point that I started looking on Ebay for old citadels. Now I'll just wait and get these.

Nice to see a loin-cloth/fur at work. haha!

Ceowald - June 9, 2010 04:18 AM (GMT)
Wow! This is really cool. I like the look of that Ogre a lot and will buy it! Thanks for the pics....

AndyM - June 9, 2010 08:30 AM (GMT)
Superb - now this is how I see an AD&D ogre! I'm really impressed and delighted to see this guy come out. What a nice suprise. :D

The only small thing I can see is that his quads (thighs) look a little small.

I really like this guys though - so excellent work. Can't wait to see the other one and for them to be released. I'll have my paint brushes ready!

Well, There is a little tinkering to be done with him, the idea is that he looks a bit wirey and not at all beefed up. It's a difficult judgement - for example the forearm are already a bit bigger than I'd like, but otherwise the balance of the model will look a bit off.

I probably will alter the back of the thigh (Biceps Femoris) a little, as it dosen't quite match the shadow of the leg in the MM, but then it's keeping the right side of the fine line of cyclist's thighs then leading onto over developed triceps.

It's a tricky balance interpreting an illustration as opposed to working from a character design sheet.

AndyM - June 9, 2010 11:58 AM (GMT)
Don’t get me wrong – I love this sculpt! He definitely has that wiry strength that you are going for. But I do think his thighs look too thin compared to the size of his calves / arms. He’s an Ogre though, so should have big arms! A bit like heavy weight boxers, who have big upper bodies compared to (comparatively) thin legs.
I am in no way criticising this sculpt. It really does work. Add nipples and you have a real winner here!

kiltedyaksman - June 9, 2010 12:13 PM (GMT)
I thought the same thing too about the thighs. Strength always comes first from the legs. From that vantage-point the hamstrings and quads appear on the thin-ish side (they do in the MM too). This is all within the understanding that this looks like a super cool sculpt.

John - June 9, 2010 12:27 PM (GMT)
Well, He is not due to go out for a couple of weeks, but the brief was very solid on the long gangley legs part - the legs are not as long as you'd think when you take the fur off, though.
In all probability they will be changed, though not by much.

John - June 9, 2010 07:14 PM (GMT)
You haven't seen my early work!

The original art is probably not enhanced by the reproduction techniques available at the time, though.

In terms of what I can do, this is one of my favourite pieces to date (I also love the Kobold Shaman), but I like to think that with each piece there is some development.

This section has been moved from the 'News' department.

zhu bajie - June 9, 2010 08:03 PM (GMT)
Very nice sculpt, lots of dynamism in the pose, and the musculature looks spot on. The facial expression is fearsome. Maybe because the sculpting material is orange, or maybe because of the simian features, but it put me in mind of a Frank Frazetta painting

(Also note the calves and thighs are a little under-developed in proportion to the biceps and forearms.)

And the addition of a satchel just makes it that bit D&D weird.

Have you been intercepting my emails, Dave?

Drew? - June 9, 2010 09:01 PM (GMT)
This is the first picture thats prompted me to post in ages!

Really REALLY nice!

John - June 9, 2010 09:21 PM (GMT)
Thanks Drew? ! :D

khalehafork - June 11, 2010 03:35 AM (GMT)
Thats rad it was based on that painting. Funny enough i was thinkning it looked a lot like Nekrons dogs from "Fire and Ice".
I like this mini a lot. Much more how i picture an ogre even though the other is straight outta the MM.
RIP Franky Frazetti.

I AM SO STOKED.

Mr T - June 11, 2010 03:54 PM (GMT)
Wow, fantastic sculpt! Casn't wait to get my hands on one of these. How's the other pose coming along? B)

Smithy - June 12, 2010 12:02 AM (GMT)
What about a partially armoured Ogre? Bits of chainmail rapped around him, or a chain shirt for his extra protection? A nice metal sheathed spiked club as a weapon would be good too. They don't all have to be totally primitive.
I will definitely be buying the 1st one anyway. B)

Well, the torso and upper thighs are made, with the head blocked out, hopefully I'll finish mid week - no photos for you lot though, as I will not post photos without Richard's approval.

What I will tell you, though, is the clothing and size is the same - but he is in a striking pose, with an open mouth, influenced by a post earlier in this thread ("fire and ice") which led to a bit of internet poking.

Oh no, Richard has turned into HAL from 2001. Now I'm scared!

Fire and Ice is great (even if roto-scoping is cheating) . A couple of neanderthal attack sequences in here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1aWIUpOJQc

But the whole film is great from the scantily clad damsels, to the He-Man prototype to the Elric-a-like.

Glad to hear the Ogre isn't a 1-off John.

Drew? - June 13, 2010 08:57 PM (GMT)
Walt Disney and his animators employed it in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937 - its a perfectly valid (if slightly "cheaty" as you pointed out LoL) technique ;)
