Title: Giant Slug - work starting soon

Otherworld - September 16, 2009 03:41 PM (GMT)
I'm about to start work on sculpting a Giant Slug model. This will be a big beastie, sculpted from Super Sculpey, and will be cast in resin (possibly with some metal parts).

Is there any interest in seeing step-by-step photos posted here? I expect that this will be a long-term project, as I probably won't be able to spend much more than a couple of hours a week on it.

DukeoftheBloodKeep - September 16, 2009 03:43 PM (GMT)
Pictures are always good!

Arkangel - September 16, 2009 08:49 PM (GMT)
Yep piccies are always appreciated

khalehafork - September 17, 2009 05:29 AM (GMT)
thatd be great, especially if its goning to be a long term project. nothing keeps the mob more subdued than a few good photos.

David Wasilewski - September 17, 2009 07:22 AM (GMT)
I'm interested!

 Hi, grodog.

OK, I've made a start on the Giant Slug. The basic body shape is done, and I'll post some pics later this evening.

DukeoftheBloodKeep - September 30, 2009 01:51 PM (GMT)
Yey... Pics!

 Hi, grodog.

Greetings, señor, fancy meeting you here :D

I hope you weren't expecting much at this early stage! Anyway, here's a quick snap to show the basic body shape and scale (that's a pig-faced orc next to it). It's about 220mm long, nose to tail. It's not a great photo, but I'll do better next time.

The core of the model is made of a kitchen foil armature, with a thick skin of Super Sculpey. It's now been baked hard, so I can start work on the details - lots of icky texture on the surfaces.

chaoticprime - October 1, 2009 02:54 PM (GMT)
Now that is a giant slug.

Assuming you will cast it out of resin, what will it cost?

Otherworld - October 1, 2009 05:30 PM (GMT)
Yes, it'll be resin, possibly with seperate cast metal optical & sensory tentacles.

As for costs, I can really give an accurate price until I know what my casters will charge me, but I would expect it to be in the region of £20.00.

More soon........

DukeoftheBloodKeep - October 1, 2009 06:04 PM (GMT)
Cool, not sure I have ever thought of using such a beast but will be keeping my eye on this. Any news on the new releases? I notice they are up in the shop... does that mean they are also in the postal system? *rubs hands impatiently, with a "I want my owlbear" look in his eyes*

Otherworld - October 1, 2009 06:21 PM (GMT)
The completion of the new castings was delayed slightly, but they've been shipped today for delivery to me tomorrow. Depending on what time the courier arrives, I may be able to get pre-orders in the post on Friday afternoon. If not, they'll all go out on Monday.

DukeoftheBloodKeep - October 1, 2009 06:59 PM (GMT)
Cool, although as soon as they arrive I have to wrap them up and put them away until christmas so there is no real hurry :'( Will put up the Owlbear in the "now available" section on the blog :)

If I recall correctly...and I might...there is a giant slug in the first of the Dragonlance modules inside of Pax Tharkas. Now, that could just be in the novel Dragons of Autumn Twlight. I don't remember. Regardless, woo, giant slug!

grodog - October 4, 2009 08:21 PM (GMT)
Giant slugs also appear in the D-series modules, among the wandering monsters (along with a 50% chance for a beholder as well---the only 1e chance to encounter such a monster during TSR's heyday).

grodog - October 15, 2009 05:38 AM (GMT)
Any updates on this one Richard? :D

Otherworld - October 15, 2009 09:23 AM (GMT)
Sorry, no progress yet. I hope to find some time this weekend, though. I'm going to make some texture stamps for the gribbly bits on the back.

This is going to be a long-term project, which I may get finished by the end of the year (no promises though!).

Richard, you do know what that looks like in that colour material  . . . . . .

:D

Are you using a particular piece of artwork as a guide for this?

No, not really. I'm using some photos of real-life slugs, but keeping an eye on the MM and D-series drawings.

Otherworld - October 19, 2009 02:32 PM (GMT)
Here's an update, with some of the texture now added to the body.

That's working out quite well. Hope to see some big gnashers in its maw!

grodog - October 19, 2009 08:34 PM (GMT)
Looking good, Richard!: I can't wait to drop one of these onto the table on one side of the PCs, and the purple worm on the other: caught between a rock and a hard place, for sure! :D

khalehafork - November 5, 2009 10:02 PM (GMT)
I like the texture. Properly creepy and looks just right.

marjasall - November 6, 2009 12:06 AM (GMT)
The texture looks great!

Alxbates - November 8, 2009 12:00 AM (GMT)
Yep, it is properly disgusting!

Cthulhu - November 9, 2009 02:25 PM (GMT)

I know it's wrong headed but this is what popped into my mind.

David Cronenberg did a number on me with this film.

Which movie is that from? i love his movies and dont recognize the scene.

Cthulhu - November 10, 2009 04:00 AM (GMT)
It's a blood slug from...

Shivers (UK and Canada) full version
The Parasite Murders (elsewhere)
They Came from Within (U.S.) edited version

The picture was probably from one of the edited scenes. I think the full runtime should be 88 or 89 mins.

Jake B - November 12, 2009 12:42 AM (GMT)
Texture is spot on icky slugness.

David Wasilewski - November 12, 2009 08:54 PM (GMT)
It looks more like somebody was laughing too hard in the bath and had a little accident to me!!!!!

(That's more scary than a slug!)

You are afraid of laughing so hard you poop in the tub?

grodog - November 23, 2009 09:16 PM (GMT)
Any updates you can share on the giant slug, Richard?

Otherworld - November 23, 2009 10:11 PM (GMT)
I'm afraid that the Giant Slug is moving very slowly!
