Title: Play by Post Shadowrun game - Recruiting!

StarManta - September 12, 2011 01:30 PM (GMT)
Hey guys, we're going to be starting a play-by-post Shadowrun game for anyone that's interested. We've got three players lined up right now (Michael, Jenn, and at least one of Jenn's friends from Germany), but anyone else that's interested in playing is welcome. (The more the merrier - if we get enough we can definitely split it into multiple games.)

Rules/guidelines for character creation:
* 400BP for characters
* Anything from the core book, Augmentation, Arsenal, Runner's Companion, Unwired, and Street Magic is allowed (except for some of the more exotic character concepts, like AIs or Ghouls, from RC will fall into "ask first" territory)
* Characters should have interesting Qualities, both positive and negative.
* Keep the min-maxing to a minimum, please, which is a fancy way of saying to have well-rounded characters.

Other rules:
* Using the Invisible Castle Roller for all dice rolls, and please create an account there as well for tracking and such.
Quick code for rolls:
xd6.hits(5) will roll x# dice counting 5s and 6s as a hit.
xd6.hitsopen(5,6) will roll x# dice with exploding 6s and count 5s and 6s as hits (for using Edge)
In the Note field, describe in a couple of words what the roll is for and write the components of your dice pool out.

* Formatting:
Speaking aloud
Subvocal or text communication
Dice rolls (as a link to the IC roll for it): Shooting Grunt 1. AGI (4)+Pistols (4)-Target Moving (-2)=6 dice (6d6.hits(5)=3)
(Note that it gives you this code, so all you have to do is copy and paste it over)
Out of character stuff - Only use this for stuff that belongs in-line, i.e. I'm using full auto in a narrow burst, shooting the second guard from the left. Any other modifiers for that? Other comments (discussion on characters, the story, and so on) will go in this thread instead.

* Once we have character sheets posted in this thread, it'd be helpful if you code include a link to yours in your signature for quick reference. Speaking of character sheets, here's a pretty good BBCode character sheet to use: http://forums.shadowrun4.com/index.php?topic=948.0

Roles still needed as of now (some will likely be combined, of course):
Ranged combat
Melee combat
Stealth
Mage
Leader
Face
Hacker
Rigger

fuck yeah I'm down.

KaiserMikeB - September 15, 2011 10:09 PM (GMT)
Confirming I'm game. I may need some hand holding until I understand the system though.

FlyingElf - September 16, 2011 04:10 AM (GMT)
I will hold your hand anytime...

StarManta - September 16, 2011 05:46 AM (GMT)
That's pretty straight, Norm.

Garr - September 17, 2011 02:52 AM (GMT)
I'm totally in as well

StarManta - September 17, 2011 01:01 PM (GMT)
Cool. What archetypes/roles would you guys like to play?

KaiserMikeB - September 19, 2011 09:52 PM (GMT)
Link to list of roles?

StarManta - September 20, 2011 08:07 AM (GMT)
Wikipedia's got the best one. Edited slightly to improve readability.

Street Samurai, characters who have heavily augmented their bodies with cyberware and bioware and focus on physical combat
Adept, characters who have magical abilities that increase their physical (and sometimes mental) combat abilities
Face, highly charismatic characters who specialize in negotiations and social manipulation
Hacker (or to use the old-fashioned term, Decker), specialize in electronic surveillance, security, and augmented/virtual reality monitoring, combat and response
Riggers, augment their brains to achieve fine control over their fleet of vehicles and drones
Magicians, who cast spells and can view emotions and call spirits from astral space

Some of these roles can be combined in interesting ways. Rigger/hacker is a frequent combination (nothing like hacking the enemy's drones and then just keeping them!) Street Sams can specialize in long-range combat or Melee, and adepts have a wide enough variety of powers to choose from that they can functionally fill almost any role. (Social Adepts, for example, use Adept powers to serve as the face, and can get some of the most ridiculously overpowered dice pools in the game.)

I generally recommend that the face be someone pretty familiar with the game and world, followed by hackers (who need to know the lay of the land in the Matrix). I used to say that about Mages, too, but as I've gotten to understand them better I can do a better job explaining that to newbies than the book does, so that's not such a big deal. Anyone can plays a fighter or gun bunny.

I'm in! Linked my friend to the forum to, so he should be posting pretty soon

Not sure what character I wanna play yet though...

lifesscholar - September 21, 2011 07:08 PM (GMT)
I'm in! I need some sort of cyberpunk in my diet :P

FlyingElf - September 22, 2011 01:33 AM (GMT)
I'll likely play to team comp. Meaning whatever the team needs, but I think hacker and Street Samurai are the 2 that pique my interest.

Vincent - September 24, 2011 07:40 PM (GMT)
Is this like D&D then?

StarManta - September 25, 2011 11:08 PM (GMT)
Yeah. Although, different rules, different world, and different play styles. If you Google around you can find info at least as good as what I can give you, but I do recommend starting at the official shadowrun4.com site.

I'm in. I'm also new. but have also been reading the core books since last night.

Itami - January 27, 2012 05:30 AM (GMT)
I'm game. =]

Tasia - March 15, 2012 12:36 AM (GMT)
I'm interested. I've played Shadow Run in person, never anything via post.

I've mostly played a Hacker. However, let me know what you need. I can also do Face or Rigger, or whatever the group needs.

StarManta - March 15, 2012 03:05 AM (GMT)
Well, we're pretty busy at the moment getting ready for the con. Since there's some interest now I will try to start this game up within the next couple of weeks.

Hope to see you at Revoluticon though!
