Description: at the Urban Arts Center
jenni - January 27, 2011 02:39 AM (GMT)
Last month Anime Punch hosted it's first Anime Adventure at the Urban Arts Center in Columbus!
We are going to be holding two events at the Urban Arts Center every month.
The first will be our Anime Adventures, where host multimedia discussions and lectures on various topics dealing with anime. Last month our topic was anime 101 and was a brief history of how anime has started and developed, as well as an overview of well known shows, people and studios.
We are also going to be holding video game tournaments once a month at the Urban Arts Center.
Everyone is welcome to attend! These lectures will be for old and new anime fans. There is no admission to get in. I'll try to keep this updated with information, but a better way to find out about our upcoming Urban Arts Center events would be to join our mailing list.

I am torn. I don't care much for shonen anime, but at the same time I like intelligent discussions on anime

how did yesterdays post modernism in anime lecture go? it sounded like it was going to be really interesting but i wasn't able to make it.
Shyra - May 18, 2012 04:22 PM (GMT)
I really liked it. There was a lot in the beginning about what postmodernism actually means, as well as surrealism, impressionism, modernism, etc. There were lots of examples from paintings. I think I enjoyed that part most, and understood it the best.
Getting into the anime side of it was neat, though I find it really difficult to put that academic lens on anime. Even if someone describes FLCL as surreal, or Utena as postmodern, I can see it but... it doesn't actually replace the definition I already had of it, even though 'surreal' or 'postmodern' might be technically more correct than 'weird' or 'inverted fairy tale' respectively.
I want to try to rewatch Madoka with those terms in mind though. And I really want to watch Millenium Actress and Macross now, from how they were described. And, to a lesser extent, Beck.
lexticy - May 18, 2012 06:22 PM (GMT)
