Title: Companion Cube
Description: possibly the greatest cosplay ever

sniper - February 13, 2008 09:08 PM (GMT)
I just want to make sure that someone has played Portal. My cosplay will be the Weighted Companion Cube from this excellent game, so I want to make sure someone gets it. How many people have played Portal?

bluenigma - February 13, 2008 11:25 PM (GMT)
I've played it, and it's probably recognizable to a good section of the demographic. However, it is not an anime cosplay.

As Mike seems to be heading toward an aneurysm, I'll repost:
QUOTE (KaiserMikeB)

As a general notice to cosplayers... again

We are an anime con, so if at all possible cosplay anime characters.

That means if you have 3 cosplays, (say Barrett, Vegita, and Tsunade), then you should leave Barrett at home. If you're planning to make a cosplay, then choose an anime one, even if you originally wanted to do Zelda or something.

If you only have one cosplay in the whole wide world, and you can not possibly make another, and that cosplay happens to be Chun-Li, then go ahead and wear her, but don't talk about it on the forums, or encourage other people to do so please.

If you want a more full explanation, there are lots of other threads on here that have them. Try a KH thread, they are extra notorious.

This is seriously getting old.

It would be nice if there was just ONE person on the forums who came in to tell us about their anime cosplay, and it not be a Naruto cosplay.

Blah... it's stuff like this that makes me want to quit doing this.

Lothlin - February 14, 2008 12:48 AM (GMT)
...Hey now, Mike, the Gainax thread is well on its way to being full of win!

Rakuen - February 14, 2008 01:02 AM (GMT)
Would it make you feel better if I did some cop-out Shinji cosplay? :)

I'm looking at the faint possibly doing Fakir and Mytho with Jenny...still haven't given up on that yet, even if I don't make AP with it. I'm definitely doing a Fakir, someday, regardless.

Despair eh? Some Zetsubou Sensei cosplay would be pretty sweet.

you know, I loved portal. And the weighted companion cube was easily my best friend in this world. It truly understood my deepest emotion. I only wish it could have escaped with me. :(

But coming dressed as a box? I love people who costume, but it's a box. AND it is an anime convention, not a gaming convention. It's like showing up with your boat to a car show. What's the point, you know what I mean. If your dead set on coming as a box maybe find an anime with a box and come as that one?

bluenigma - February 14, 2008 04:47 AM (GMT)

I agree that in anime conventions (most) people should be cospalying as anime characters. The car show analogy was really good.

However, I kind of disagree with your "it's just a box" logic. People cosplay as characters and not as things. A characters's value should not be entirely based on how ellaborate his or her costume is. Best cosplayers don't just wear their costumes - they act as the characters they are representing (so ok they don't do it that much anymore but they still try to envoke the characters spirit when they pose for pictures). So if sniper really finds this particular character fascinating - I don't think we should try to change her opinion by saying how lame it is (even if it is pretty lame ;).

As long as she's not cosplaying as a box from MGS or a box of Pocky, I'm cool.

That said, it's an anime con and Portal is a game. You should pick a different character.

Joran - February 15, 2008 01:55 AM (GMT)
The companion cube really is just a box :-P

Like, seriously, it's box you carry around in one level, and it's got a heart on it. It's a lateral move from the MGS box.

Proman - February 15, 2008 02:58 AM (GMT)
I know. I've played Portal too.

wolf - February 15, 2008 03:35 AM (GMT)
I think the box idea is overdone, especially the Gundam ones. Try something like going as a giant Puar, you'll get more praise that way.

It's been determined many times that I would fail at any cosplay I tried. So I decided to go as something that doesn't require me to fit a body type. There's a video game room, why not have video game cosplays? I've seen some really good companion cube costumes online, so I could probably make it work.

My favorite cosplays last tournament were Cloudburg (a video game and American cartoon), Jesus with a Keyblade (a video game and religion), and Snake (a video game).

I want a missed the point badge, cosplay edition. At this point...

Alright, cosplaying a video game character makes a little girl cry. It doesn't matter about those people who went ahead and went against the wishes, as much as it's still going to make a little girl cry. 16 is still little.

However, why is explained here

Snake. o.o Everyone may have loved him, but he was he was a bitch to register...get ooc long enough to get your badge please! And don't get offended if someone doesn't reconize your cosplay, and tell them to figure it out, at that point I wouldn't have reconized my own cosplay.

Yeah, I don't get that either honestly.

"we're an anime con, with a gaming room full of non-anime games, but please respect our wishes to not cosplay anything from them, because like we said, it's STRICTLY an anime con"

Yeah, that makes a WHOLE lot of sense.

The complaining about too much Naruto cosplay thing is even more hypocritical, and honestly, just plain lacks sense. People cosplay mainly from 3 things currently.

1. Naruto
2. Kingdom Hearts
3. Bleach

Take away Kingdom Hearts and you'll have a lot more Naruto cosplay.

Yuffie - February 18, 2008 01:16 PM (GMT)
I think you may be blowing the Naruto thing out of porportion, the only comment made was about wanting to hear of an anime cosplay beyond Naruto.

To make something like that into a arguement, especially the context is came from, seems pretty senseless.

Anyway, I guess a staffer will come on and settle this, but I think you're just looking for a fight.

If you think it's frustrating to follow rules that change by the minute, imagine trying to enforce them.

KaiserMikeB - February 18, 2008 07:12 PM (GMT)
What the fuck, Brian. We've had these rules for at least 2 years, if not 3 now. Some subtleties may change, but they have been static.

By now you all should know how we feel about this, and why we feel that way.
If you don't like it, fucking ignore us then, what are we going to do about it?

I like Naruto, I like Naruto a lot (the show, not the character). That being said, I think non-canonical cosplays like "Akatsuki Gaara!" or "Sexy no Jutsu Itachi" or "Anbu Sasuke" are pretty fucking lame.

Anbu cosplays are really fucking hardcore when done right, I remember a group at sugoi 05 that I was very impressed with. (Of course, in the show the Anbu seem to exist entirely for the purpose of dying, probably why Kakashi bailed on them!)
Sexy no Jutsu cosplays are hot, which I can appreciate, but they are also the easiest way to say "LOOK AT ME!!! I'M A WHORE!!! I DEMAND YOUR ATTENTION!!". There are literally thousands of really fucking hot cosplay options out there that let you show off ANYTHING you want to. Making up a character just to do it is sort of trampy. You can have a revealing cosplay and still be classy about it.
I'll be the first to admit I think Akatsuki is lame, both as a plot device, as a concept, and as a cosplay. Some of the freakier ones are pretty sweet, I was very impressed with the group that did the Akatsuki Musical last year. While the skit was ok, at least 3 of the costumes were really amazing. Itachi's and non-canon akatsuki do nothing for me, like "wow, you made a moo-moo, good job."

It's not a box, but someone could always find a big black ball to slide into and show up dressed as Gantz.

See, now that would be awesome.

They'd have to have various signs and props concerning the scores of random cosplay.

sniper - February 22, 2008 05:36 AM (GMT)
Heh, Gantz would be awesome. I'd also do Eyeshield 21, since he's short and doesn't have any defining physical features besides that, but football equipment is expensive as fuck. I'm willing do do anything that doesn't require a specific body type, such as Gantz since he's a ball. Any other suggestions? I'm tired so I'm drawing a blank.

All I know is that I've recently become a crazy Gantz fanboy, and though I've lost a good deal of weight and have an Izumi costume practically complete, I'm of the mindset that I don't want to scar the precious "Childrens of the Punch" with my post-weight-loss jigglies. So that costume may come next year... otherwise, I'd be all over the Gantz Sphere cosplay.

in the meantime, I'm thinking that Centaura has some freaking awesome omg great ideas for a Gantz cosplayer. You should heed them. I've been thinking of ways to employ some of the ideas they suggested. If you decide you want to do a Gantz cosplay instead of the Companion Cube thing, drop me a PM and I'd love to collaborate and possibly help give some extra logistical ideas as to how to pull it off. (trust me.. I helped a friend build a plush companion cube costume a few weeks ago and it was more complicated than anything I have ever worked on before.)

Appease the "Gods of the Punch" and cosplay something from an anime. Roll it out as Gantz, yo'.

sniper - February 23, 2008 06:18 AM (GMT)
I'll take you're advice, since I don't want Mike to burst a blood vessel. Gantz it is.
