Name: Medical Extraction Teams. Common Name: The White Valkyries
Founding: 2157 CE, 2548 GS
Allegiance: Alliance Navy (although due to Unification they have become active in the Citadel fleet)
Location: Headquarter in the Admiralty Building on Earth
Roster: There are 800 First Valkyries, 50-150 Second Valkyries, and thousands of support members on the roster at any one time. First Valkyries are divided into four groups. The first three contain 256 members each and rotate between three states: Active Duty, Training, and Leave. The last has 32 members and is assigned to "special duties" (in other words, Black Ops)
Agenda: CSAR teams at heart, Valkyries were originally tasked with the extraction of personnel trapped in disabled ships and the retrieval of escape pods. In recent years they have evolved into other duties like hostage rescue and planetside personnel support. Upon formation in the First Contact War they adopted they motto of the American Pararescue Jumpers: "So that others may live"
Membership: Membership is purely voluntary (although the Valkyries have been know to court prospects) and any one can put in for the training program, but the Valkyries tend to draw their members from two places. The first is from the Naval Hospital corpse, which is where most of the fully certified doctors in the Valkyries come from. The second is from the Valkyrie support forces, which tends to produce Valkyries with other useful skills (pilots, mechanics, weapons experts, ect...). Once accepted though they go through the same 6 month training program known as M4 training. After completion of the M4 program they become Second Valkyries and are placed into the support forces. When an opening appears on the First Valkyrie roster the senior Second Valkyrie is called up to fill it. After they receive their orders for the First Valkyries they most complete 3 additional weeks of training to become M5 certified.
Description: A special operations force within the Alliance Navy the White Valkyries are some of the most highly trained combat medics in citadel space. Evolving of emergency response crews (who responded to ships sending out distress signals during humanities expansion period), the White Valkyries first emerged as volunteers from that service who chose to take their skills into battle during the First Contact War and were, at the time, little more than a hastily thrown together unit. While they engaged in a handful of minor skirmishes leading up to the turian occupation of Shanxi without much fanfare, they really proved their worth when (during the liberation of the planet) they managed to successfully evacuated 153 out of 207 crewmen from the critically disabled torpedo cruiser
Yorktown. It was after that operation that the Valkyries were officially commissioned as the MET (Medical Extraction Teams) and since then they have gained a reputation (even among non human crews) as the team you want to get there first in an emergency. Since Unification, and after seeing the Valkyries working on their side in combat for the first time, the council has been debating the formation of an MET force within the citadel fleet based off (and formed with members of) the White Valkyries. The MET forces within the Alliance Navy have also been accepting non-human applicants since Unification (the Quarians have been prominently taking advantage of this opportunity as a way to increase their standing in the galactic community by sharing their tricks to keep dying ships alive long enough to rescue the crew).
