Name: Crick class (naming convention: famous medical practitioners)
Race Affiliation: Alliance Navy
Type: Rescue Frigate
Crew: 4 MET squads (4 men per squad for a total of 16), 16 medical personnel, 8 crew members. Total: 40
Armament: 6 tow hooks, 2 emergency boarding tubes, GARDIAN with 8 point defense turrets, 1 disruptor torpedo pays, and advanced kinetic buffers
Appearance: Putting function before form, the Crick class takes the standard command/crew deck from alliance frigates (which is a slightly more angular version of the center portion of the
Normandy, and contains the disruptor torpedo bay at the bow) and attaches two large medical bays (40 patient capacity in each) to the aft on either side. In front of those (on the mid-ship line) are specially designed boarding tubes that allow
MET squads to deploy to damaged ships. The tubes also allow docking with
Cosmas class cruisers. Finally in front of the tubes are downward slopping nacelles containing the DRA, "droplet" heat sinks, and kinetic buffers.
Description: The latest rescue ship to be deployed by the Alliance Navy the Crick class came into service 18 months prior to Unification. Designed with the singular goal of enabling
MET squads to extract personnel from disabled ships, it uses the latest technology to maximize its maneuvering and defensive capabilities. It also has slightly above average speed but almost no offensive power. In order to allow the medical personnel to work efficiently the a-grav must be constantly maintained in the medical bays, even during combat, so the heat dispersal systems are often over worked to the point that they must be exchanged after every operation. Basic tactics involve tethering a ship with tow hooks to bring it along side and then using the boarding tubes (which are capable of creating and airtight seal on any surface and, if need be, create a hole in the side of the disabled ship) to deploy the MET squads, who then extract any remaining crew members to the medical facilities on board the rescue frigate. The tubes can also be used as docking ports for escape pods. When the medical bays fill, they return to a
Cosmas Class cruiser (which four Cricks use together as a mothership) and move the rescued to the larger facilities on board the cruiser. Due to the use of the
Cosmas class as a mothership, the Crick contains no sleeping quarters and only minimal comfort facilities, most of which are contained in the medical bays and reserved for patients. The combination of the Crick and
Cosmas classes allows the Alliance to have top of the line medical facilities in any system in very little time.
