White's Club
White's is a London gentlemen's club, established at 4 Chesterfield Street in 1693 by Francesco Bianco. It moved to 37-38 St. James, on the east side of the street, in 1778. From 1783 it was the unofficial headquarters of the Tory party, facing the Whig's Brooks' club on the other side of the street. A few apolitical and affable gentlemen managed to belong to both.

In the later 18th century, the table directly in front of it became a seat of privilege, the throne of the most socially influential men in the club. This belonged to arbiter elegantiarum Beau Brummel. Many bets were placed in White's famous betting book. Some of those entries were on sports, but more often on political developments, especially during the chaotic years of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars. A good many were social bets, such as whether a friend would marry this year, or whom.

Almack's
Almack's Assembly Rooms was one of the first clubs in London that which welcomed both men and women, although at first, many women avoided it. It was one of a limited number of upper class mixed-sex public social venues in the British capital in an era when the most important venues for the hectic social season were the grand houses of the aristocracy. Almack's Assembly Rooms were governed by a select committee of the most influential and exclusive ladies of the ton, known as the Lady Patronesses of Almacks.

Tattersall's Repository
This place, so well known, and so generally frequented, is situated near Hyde Park-corner. It was established, in the year 1773, by Mr. Richard Tattersall, the father of the present proprietor, for the reception, and sale by auction, of horses, carriages, coach- harness, hounds, etc. It is the grand mart for every thing connected with the sports of the field, the business of the turf, and equestrian recreations. The days of sale are every Monday and Thursday during the winter season, and on Mondays only in the summer. On the mornings when there is no sale, this Repository is a fashionable lounge for sporting gentlemen.

Also called Tatt's, by those of the ton.

British Museum
Though principally a museum of cultural art objects and antiquities today, the British Museum was founded as a "universal museum". This is reflected in the first bequest by Sir Hans Sloane, comprising some 40,000 printed books, 7,000 manuscripts, extensive natural history specimens, prints by Albrecht Dürer and antiquities from Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Middle and Far East and the Americas.
