ALAMEDA NEWS Monday, September 16, 2008Let’s address the question that’s been on everybody’s minds lately: Just what happened to the old Alameda Theatre?
Everything was just fine and dandy on Sunday when the security staff did their final checks and locked everything up for the night. Most of the staff went home on time at 10:00 that night, leaving only Raymond Hughes, who was to work the graveyard shift. But by the time dawn broke and commuters began their journey to work, the theatre was simply gone, as if it had never existed. And Mr Hughes has not been seen since the incident.
Initial reports were called in to the Alameda County Police Department, and at first the emergency operators thought that some local kids were making senseless prank calls until the Chief of Police passed the scene on his way to work. The plot of land that once housed the building looks like the site of a terrorist bombing, but residents living in the neighbouring apartment complex and housing are all reporting that there wasn’t so much as a flash of lightening and thunder that night, let alone a bomb blast.
Stranger still, all plant life in the vicinity has wilted and died, though nothing appears to have been burned; and the neighbouring buildings – including the brand new office complex that was just opened last year – seem to have been affected [see right], the stone and bricks looking washed out and aged. Already repair work has begun on the Goldstone apartment complex, replacing bricks that have already begun to crumble. David Gregory, superintendent of the building, says that extensive work is going to need to be done to ensure the building remains structurally sound, and the neighbouring parking garages are going to be demolished next week and completely rebuilt. Already, alternative housing is being sought for affected residents while repairs are ongoing.
A spokesperson for the ACPD has issued a statement confirming that at present, police have no leads – and by all accounts they seem just as baffled by this as the rest of us. Investigations into this strange are ongoing, and they are appealing for anybody who may have information to please come forward and give a statement.
