Okay, you can say we have had enough time to ponder what the new Necron Codex could be, assuming it will ever come out. There are several ideas out there, ranging from copy & paste of the original to some crack induced ideas of supremacy. So, here is my two cents.
First, let's look at what GW is doing right now. There is focus on using USR instead of a wide array of new rules, and each army has some model that modifies the unit. So rather than rethink the whole codex, let's keep in theme of the existing models and current trends. The basic Necron ability would include the following "All models with the Necron ability gain Tank Hunter and Stubborn" The trusty Gauss Flayer keeps its bolter-like profile, only lose the 6 auto glance to giving the weapon the Lance ability. Adding the Tank Hunter ability, that makes any armor in game AV 11 or less. The idea of a lone Warrior taking out a Land Raider are long gone once the killing glance result was eliminated. This however fits the fluff without overpowering or mudding up with too many new rules. The Tank Hunter ability also gives all Necron disruption fields for free. Since most assaults affect the rear armor, Flayed Ones suddenly become a threat to vehicles. There is a lot of debate about We'll be Back vs Feel No Pain. I think FNP is the new black in 40k, so we'll use that instead of WBB. Necron are described as "our number is Legion" which is hard to do given their 18 pts each cost for the only troop choice. My basic complaint about the current codex is that it does not have the options of the new codex. So to give you more options, the humble trooper would look like this: Basic Warrior dropped down to 12 points Unit may add a Tomb Spyder for 55 pts, giving the unit FNP Unit may add a Pariah for 41 pts The idea is that it is not Warriors who self repair, but the thousands of scarabs reassembling them. My original idea was you add "construction scarabs" but I changed the idea after hearing many rumors of a plastic tomb spyder coming out. Adding a Pariah to the unit allows for the Fear List to grow beyond the Elite choice laden version of the current codex So before we get to the other options, I will wait for feedback on this building block |

first let me say that it was very brave of you to play necrons in a 5th edition world
the only thing braver is playing grey knights the first rule i would change is the phase out rule - it is unnecessary to hamstring the army in this way - necrons fight on through 75% losses and if annihilated, phase out (perhaps taking some victory points with them?) i think thats 99% of the improvement needed right there i like your ideas regarding tank killing ability, but you may have gone a bit too far -- think of the orcs who reliably have only powerclaws to down tanks (no shooting to speak off) maybe upgun destroyers and heavy destroyers to handle this function for necrons - and to provide an insquad close upgrade combat capability similar to pariah? (adding the spiders was a good idea but only if strenght vs. armor is greater than 6....and a marine SGt with fist is about same points) i like FNP vs. WBB - but it is an upgrade not a fair exchange (no chance for unit to dissapear before the roll) so perhaps something should be lost? i look forward to further speculation. |

Actually my non-mech Guard army just had its butt kicked by a grey knights list... fun game but 3+ saves and shrouding are a thing to behold..
