GOLD DRAGONS

Gold dragons are the largest (ranging from 38-42 feet long) as well as most intelligent of all dragons, both male and female. Any non-gold dragon will invariably obey a queen's orders, even against the wishes of its own rider. Queens are incapable of digesting firestone and producing flame; however, they do fight Thread - they fly in the lowest wing, with their riders armed with specially designed flamethrowers to flame any Thread missed by the above wings. A gold dragon will always Impress a heterosexual female WITH NO EXCEPTIONS! They used to be the only clutching females and such are the most important to the weyr. They are the only true Queen's of the Weyr, and even an Obsidian will be considered a 'Regent' in place of a Gold Queen.

Size: 40-45 Feet
Personality: Golds are usually proud of their station and can be quite arrogant. They are leaders of the weyr and they know it. Usually quite aggressive, they are in possession of excellent leadership qualities. On the other hand, some golds can be level headed, calm, and very motherly.
Impress to: Heterosexual females who can keep up with their personality, usually showing leadership qualites and being able to stand up for themselves, though anything beyond that can range.
Colors: Range from dark rose gold, bronzey gold, up to lighter, white gold or yellow gold.
Clutch Size: 10 (less fertile) up to more than 40 (especially fertile).

BRONZE DRAGONS

Bronze dragons are the largest males (35-38 feet long), although most are significantly smaller than the queens. Bronzes only comprise of about 5% of all dragons, but they are inherent leaders of the weyr. They are almost always the ones to mate with queens be, as the smaller colors generally lack the stamina to chase and catch the gold dragons when they rise to mate. Due to the 5-1 bronze/gold ratio and the infrequency of gold mating flights, they often mate with greens (the losers of a gold flight almost always seek a green for their needs), but their size often puts them at a disadvantage in chasing the agile, smaller females. The senior bronze of a Weyr is determined through which bronze wins the mating flight of the senior gold. Bronze dragons will always Impress a heterosexual male.

Size: 37-42 Feet
Personality: Powerful and domineering, Bronzes are princes of the weyr, some always walking around the weyr with a puffed out chest and an arrogant stride, while others are collected, intelligent leaders. The only dragons they bow to are Golds.
Impresses to: Heterosexual males with leadership qualities and are usually just as domineering and prideful as them, though some Bronzes choose those that can tame their arrogant nature.
Colors: Range from Dark bronze to a more olivy bronze, and up to a lighter bronze.

PLATINUM DRAGONS

Second largest of the males, (32-36) Platinum dragons one of the new colors that appear to be mutated bronzes... They can catch a Queen just as easily as a bronze, though some Golds will refuse to choose a Platinum male as her mate, mostly due to instincts that rise up when these males Chase. This tended to happen more right after the first split from Amaris, but it is much more common for a Platinum to fly a Queen now, and there have been Platinum Weyrleaders. More often they choose to fly after Obsidian or Rubies, occasionally attempting the lower ranking colors as well. A Platinum dragon has the same instinctual leadership qualities of a bronze, though they are usually calmer and less arrogant then their slightly larger brothers. These males sometimes scorn Golds and Bronzes, usually those who have had an experience with their prejudiced human riders. Platinum dragons will always Impress to men, usually heterosexual but very rarely bisexual males.

Size: 35-40 Feet
Personality: Quiet and sometimes brooding, Platinum Dragons are much akin to Bronzes in that they are intelligent and born leaders, though they are more behind the scene actors than the other, more arrogant males. Platinums sometimes suprise other dragons and humans by coming up with another way to accomplish difficult tasks.
Impresses to: Most often heterosexual males, though they will occasionally choose bisexual males, but never homosexual males. These males are usually quiet and calm, intelligent yet preferring to act behind the scenes, sometimes being loners among others.
Colors: Range from darker, bronzy silver to a grayish silver, and even a very light silver.

OBSIDIAN DRAGONS

Second largest of all females, Obsidians are miniature Queens of the weyr, (34-38 feet). Shining, shimmering black, their hides appear almost faceted, a dark black that shimmers with other dark colors, such as deep indigos, purples, and blues, whenever light touches them, defining them from their smaller Black siblings. They are seen as one of the most beautiful of dragons, slimmer bodied than Golds yet heavier set then greens. Most dragons will obey an Obsidian, though not to the same extent they would a gold. An Obsidian can become weyrqueen, but only if she can prove herself against a gold by Rising before one. More aggressive than Golds, they are much more rebellious and daring than their larger sisters. Oddly enough, they are also more likely to allow other dragons onto their sands to help protect them, most especially Rubies or Blacks. Obsidians cannot flame.

Size: 34-38 Feet
Personality: Rebellious and Daring, Obsidians are dragons who dislike listening to others and can hold a long grudge. They do possess leadership qualities, though usually they are disregarded in favor of Golds. While some Obsidians find it hard to work alongside or underneath Golds, others are eager and willing to work alongside them... They are still ranked lower than the Golds and as such, must still listen to their orders.
Impresses to: Heterosexual females or very, very rarely Bisexual females. They usually Impress to those who are willing to fight for what they want and dream of more than what they have.
Color: Beautiful shimmering black that will have a tone of another color. Black-purple, Black-indigo , Black-blue,and very rarely, Black-gold.
Clutch Size: 10 (less fertile) to 20 (extremely fertile)

RUBY DRAGONS

Third largest of the females, (32-36 feet) Rubies are the last of fertile females. Oddly enough if they are complete opposites of their Red siblings, being the calmest of all the females in temperment. They are graceful, dreamy creatures that hate fighting and will do their best to calm everyone around them. They are very motherly, almost to the point of being nagging, and will coddle everyone around them, even other dragon's humans. Rubies are very good at soothing other dragons when hurt, and though they cannot command other dragons to the degree that Gold or even Obsidians can, they will do their best to help others. Very rarely will these lovely dragonesses become aggressive, and it is usually due to someone coming too near their clutch or hurting their bonded. Rubies cannot flame.

Size: 32-36 Feet
Personality: Motherly and sweet, Rubies are the sweethearts of the dragonkind. They adore helping out and will very rarely become aggressive. Usually non-aggressive, they are also nearly always willing to get along with Golds and Obsidians, and, for the most part, do not have the hunger for power that the higher ranked females do. Rubies can, on occasion, choose to give up their right to have clutches by chewing Firestone.
Impresses to: Heterosexual or bisexual females, bisexual or homosexual males who are alike to them, or need to be mothered.
Color: Darker, gleaming red that will either be purely dark red to a more purply-red.
Clutch Size: 2 (less fertile) to 10 (especially fertile)

BROWN DRAGONS

Brown dragons are medium sized (30-35 feet long) among the dragons. They may occasionally mate with queens, although this is rare, and becomes even more rare as the dragons increase in size; by Ramoth's time in the Ninth Pass it is unheard-of. Brown riders are usually male, and most are heterosexual, but bisexual or "masculine" homosexual brownriders are not rare. Rarest of all is female brown riders, even rarer than gold dragons in a weyr. Brown dragons are usually level headed males who can be leaders if called upon, and they make up the backbone of the weyr.

Size: 30-35 Feet
Personality: Steady and calm, Brown dragons are the males who will always be there when needed, ready and waiting to be called upon. Rarely are they true leaders, but there has been a few browns with the intelligence and skill to lead their wings.
Impresses to: Heterosexual or very rarely, Bisexual or homosexual males. Very, very rarely will they Impress asexual or homosexual females.
Colors: Range anywhere from dark, chocolate brown to lighter, sandy brown to a more reddish brown.

BLACK DRAGONS

One of the only dragons that come in both male and female, Black dragons are mid sized (28-32 feet). Matte black in color, Blacks are easily told apart from their Obsidian sisters since they do not have the metallic sheen nor their size. Both sexes are equal in size and their sex is hard to tell, only being able to be told apart through their mind voice since both males and females are rare to Rise or Chase. Blacks are almost delicate in their appearance, more sinuously bodied then the other dragons, with thinner, whippier bodies that allow them to pull off tricks that only greens can approach. As such, they are prized Thread Fighters, their fierce personalities fitting this as well. They are usually more feral in nature, preferring to stay away from others and range the heights with only their bondeds for company.

Size: 28-34 feet
Personality: Fierce and wild, Blacks are dragons who dislike to be around other dragons for long, choosing to be on their own or with their bonded. The only dragons they seem to be able to be around for long are Obsidians, or Reds and this is unknown why. Oddly enough, there are some Blacks who love hatchlings and can be seen ghosting around Hatching Sands when there are Eggs, protecting them in addition to the mother and are sometimes called upon as adoptive mothers when the Clutchmother must feed or sleep. Black males are fertile while females, usually, are not.
Impesses to: Males or females of any sexuality, usually those who fit along with their own personality as loners, or those who balance their darkness with light.
Colors: Their hide is completly, matte black. Very rarely will they have a splash of odd color from one of the other ranks.

RED DRAGONS

The only other dragons that come as both males and females, Reds are almost exactly the same size as blacks (26-32 feet). These dragons are very emotional, loving and hating in extremes, and their anger is something to be feared of, and even the hatching of a red is usually accompanied with blood in some form or fashion. Fiercely protective of their bonded, they will fight any other dragon besides gold to keep their humans safe. Oddly enough when around their bondeds they turn into playful puppies, purring and rubbing up against them even when their size is so much larger. This loving attention is usually transferred to their mates as well. Their sex is much more easily told, and while males are fertile, females are not.

Size: 26-32 Feet
Personality: Emotional in the extreme, Reds are nearly bipolar in nature, loving and hating easily. They can easily become very aggressive, nearly as much as a clutching Gold.
Impress to: Males or females of any sexuality, usually matching them in their extreme personalities or being calmer, able to balance their dragon's personalities.
Colors: Range from light, almost pinkish red to a bright crimson red. They are told apart from their larger Ruby sisters due to the fact that their hide is just as matte as Blacks, and they are never as dark as Rubies are.

BLUE DRAGONS

Blue dragons are the smallest males (25-30 feet long) and make up about a third (30%) of all dragons on Pern. They are nearly as agile as greens, but unlike the greens, they often have enough stamina to last for an entire Threadfall. They mate only with greens, or female reds and blacks, and very rarely Rubies as they are simply too small to keep up with a massive queen or Obsidian over a long mating flight. There are few prominent blue dragons or blueriders in the books. Some assume the position of teaching the new riders after their Impression. Blueriders are typically homosexual or bisexual males or females, more usually males, though some are heterosexual.

Size: 25-30 Feet
Personality: Empathic and gentle, Blues are those sent out on Search to sniff out those who would best benifit the weyr. They can be pranksters and are known to love a good joke, yet will become staunch defenders if they believe it has gone too far.
Impress to: Males of any sexuality, though usually heterosexual or bisexual, and homosexual or bisexual females. They tend to choose those who can appreciate a good joke, and those who can see into the hearts of others.
Colors: Range from dark, stormy blue to a cerulean color, lightening to a more turquoise blue and a sky blue.

GREEN DRAGONS

Green dragons are the smallest normal color (20-25 feet long), and make up about half of all dragons on Pern (50%). They are female, but unlike the queens, they are infertile and can produce flame. They are extremely valuable in Threadfall because of their agility, but they lack the stamina to last an entire Fall and generally fly in two or three shifts. Greens will rise up to four times a turn, and are notorious for being very sexual creatures.


Size: 20-25 Feet
Personality: Greens have a wide variety of personalities, some being flirty and fun while others are aggressive and moody. All tend to be quite seductive creatures, and can be quite fierce in defense of their mates.
Impresses to: Females of any sexual orientation may Impress Green, as well as homosexual or bisexual males. Since their personalities are so varied, it is hard to say exactly what greens look for.
Colors: Range from dark, pine green and emerald to spring green.

WHITE DRAGONS

Smallest of all dragons (15-18 feet), White dragons are infertile, sexless dragons. Rarest of all dragons, even with all the new colors, white dragons are even more agile than the Greens, yet there endurance is even less. White dragons will never Rise, will never even feel the urge to do so. Whites possess excellent Betweening skills and seem to be more intelligent than most, actually being on par with a bronze or platinum.

Colors: Usually a perfect white, there are some with shades of lighter, almost pink white.
