well, as predicted, DK doesnt work with Vista, even with 95 compatibility mode. It goes into the screen of the roaring horned reaper, and text underneath, but when i click to past it, a black quare fills the top left part of my screen, it minimises, then dissapears. Any advice?

Oh dear poor Lquiz icon_sad.gif Wait for SP1?, run it on XP?, run it in W2000/W98?
I dont have any probs as i run it on Linux and will be able to for as long as there are PCs as it doesnt drop legacy support. I just got some new kit today icon_smile.gif GigaByte mobo thats only been out a couple of months, Athlon64 X2 4.2 GHz processor and 2GB of OCZ DDR2 memory (the dearest item). I know that DK will still run fine, i may have to slow it down thats all icon_smile.gif
Point im making is that theres always a way if your determined enough.
Just had a thought, the problem could be all that DRM krap they put in Vista, it might think your a pirate icon_lol.gif
MK may have some ideas, hes got DK2 running on it i think.
All the best.

Well the marketing BS would probably call that a 5.3Ghz dual core icon_smile.gif Intel or AMD ?

Yeah well i remember MK said he got it going ok but im sure he said to someone with DK on vista your screwed icon_sad.gif
I keep an old fileserver box around and run all the old dos stuff on that with dos5 under linux and it works great. I can run in the GUI on this machine with no problem except the mouse can get weird but its probably to do with running a 640x480 game on a 1280x1024 fullscreen. Still ok as i just use it for testing anyway not playing. If i try running it on this in the console it just blackscreens and god knows what with just dos as it cant handle usb and pci sound icon_sad.gif
If it was me i'de just run DK from a linux live CD via dosemu that way you dont install anything, like playing a games console icon_smile.gif
Another thing i got to check out on the new processor is the hardware virtualization it can do, that'll be fun icon_smile.gif
cheers

PS
I just thought of it, DosBox can probably run DK on vista ok but i dont know of anyone whos done it. I'll check around the net.

Heres the link for DosBox if anyone wants to try it out. You will need to run 'keeper.exe' not 'keeper95.exe' as this is a 'Dos' emulator for Windows. Let us know how it goes if you try it out.

get DosBox for Windows

Heres a forum thread about someone running it on vista:

http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=16453

Seems to be quite a few Apple MAC users running this thing too.
Hope this is helpful to folks.

I am willing to try this last one thing... if this still doesnt work... I am packing up Dungeon Keeper 1!!!!

Whoa esmnh icon_smile.gif
Keeper95.exe is a windows executable (program). You cant run this under Dos but when BullFrog shipped DK things were at a changeover point and everything was moving onto Windows version 95 at the time. A lot of people at the time were still running games under Dos so BullFrog shipped DK with an executable program for both systems. The Dos DK is keeper.exe and as i said the keeper95.exe is the Windows version of DK. If you try to run the keeper95.exe with Dos or DosBox you should get a message like 'this program must be run under Microsoft Windows' or whatever.
DosBox is an MsDos emulator for Windows, Windows has its own inbuilt Dos support but this will eventually be removed as things move further away from the Dos days icon_sad.gif
Dont give up though as the DosBox people are commited to making sure that Dos programs will run under Windows but being as Vista is new they have to play catchup with it. DosBox runs very well with XP i understand.
Understand that Microsoft are a business trying to make money and even though they created MsDos legacy support for it just means losing money from their point of view so it will be increasingly unsupported. I think your best bet is still DosBox and if their are problems then the DosBox people are the ones most likely to solve them but you need to contact them and explain the problem for them to do something about it.
Myself i use the Linux operating system with DosEmu for running loads of old Dos programs from the desktop or a console and im very pleased with the stability and performance. This tricks Dos into thinking its running on old hardware as Dos cant handle PCI(e), agp or usb stuff. You can run a lot of old Windows stuff too. You may not want to go this route as it means some work on your part.
Sorry your having problems and if you need any more help just ask.
cheers

To play Dungeon Keeper under Dosbox, you have to install the Dos version of DK first. So, insert the CD of Dungeon Keeper or Dungeon Keeper Gold into your drive and start Dosbox.

Type in:

mount x x:\ -t cdrom (where x is the letter of your CD-ROM drive)

mount c c:\ (even if the message tells you that it's not recomended to do that, do it anyway)

x:\ (your cd drive)

setup

Follow the instructions and install the game in the C drive (by default: C:\Keeper)

Once finished configure your sound card, select Sound Blaster 16, Base=220, IRQ=7, DMA=5, HDMA=1. If you do the test, you should hear something. Save your configurations and quit the setup. Now, run Keeper.exe (located in C:\Keeper) under Dosbox and the game should run fine. Have fun!
