Campaigners on the Greek island of Lesbos are going to court to try to stop a gay rights organisation from using the word "lesbian."

The man at the centre of the dispute claims the sexual connotation of the word brings disgrace to islanders.

Watch a clip and then post your views.

I think it is wrong as well. I am a supporter of lesbianism. If I was a woman I'd want to be one as well.

pjr-laugh.png oh junius!

Wouldn't it be easier to change the name of the island? Then they could have a huge party every year to celebrate their new name, get drunk and everybody would be happy! smile.gif

Hi Mysty (sorry for getting your named wrong in previous posts... wasn’t intentional),

Yes... it probably would..... but I like the name, it has a bit of history to it; According to Classical Greek mythology, Lesbos was the patron god of the island. Macar was reputedly the first king whose many "daughters" bequeathed their names to some of the present larger towns. In Classical myth his "sister", Canace, was killed to have him made king. The place names with female origins are likely to be much earlier settlements named after local goddesses, who were replaced by gods.

I’d rather have a party every year to celebrate lesbianism and for giving the world that name.

when i was a little lad i have to admit that i wanted
to move to Lesbos as i thought that is where all the Lesbians came from.
Perhaps they have a point.

But if we cant call them lesbians, then what can we call them?

I have to agree with the Islanders, their identity is being taken away.

We are in the 21st centaury and we still have the need to label people?
It is wrong.
The lesbians say themselves that they do not like the tearm.
So they should stop using it.
Why do we as a society have to label people?

All due respect, hon, but it ain't the ones who DON'T feel the urge to ram their sexuality down everybody else's throat that are the problem here.

Though I agree that bunching people up under labels is just lazy.

It's nice to see that you all have open minds on this subject. Someone very close to my heart is one of these people and can joke about it. But when people are nasty and caustic about them it is like a knife through my heart.

Why? Because I'd like to be a lesbian? It is not that funny really, I wouldn't fancy a man poking around inside me (of course if I was a woman... but then i wouldn't even fancy it as a man either). ninja.gif laugh.gif

We are all equal Sherry and should be treated that way; no matter what our sexuality, colour of skin etc are. If we should judge then we should judge someone in how they treat their fellow man. Whether someone is a lesbian or not... black or white, is irrelevant... what is relevant is the person inside. BlowKiss2.gif

I totally agree, it's folk feel they have to evangelise their chosen way of life that I get annoyed with.

As a society we seem to be too quick to label anyone! I got called a lesbian as am not a slag like other people I know, and wouldn't date a guy I am childhood friends with when he was madly in love with me, as I didn't want to hurt him??!!

Some people are narrow minded and believe that those who do not live the way they do are deviants.

And Ricey, you are such a big sook!
