It evokes so many questions I don't know where to begin.Very questionable.

I suggest you start with a good science book, that will probably answer all your questions. |

Clearly the blogger is using a definition of the term pseudo that I am not aware of and has a narrow self involved sense of what science is and knows. He might want to go and check on it because calling something pseudo does not invalidate it, it does however betray his general ignorance. Step up, point out Dawkin's flaws (because that blogger certainly didn't manage) and we can iron out some of the kinks in your logic. Or go read a science book and become an informed consumer of information rather than cherry picking your own version of reality. I say that in absolute sincerity because all you will do is bang your head against the plate glass what we know whenever you are confronted with it..like a fly at a window.

how is it questionable?
all he is telling his daughter is to not believe something because someone told them it was true, but to look at the evidence first. |

Quite. However, my belief in God isn't tradition and it doesn't owe anything to what anyone else has told me. Belief in God isn't always about religion.

good point, it does miss out those people who believe in god, but are not part of a religion.

Exactly, Kayls. I have no time for 'celebs' and, it seems to me, that Mr D is falling into that trap. I sometimes find his opinions short sighted and biased towards an anti-religious mind set. Disappointing, but not surprising, given the way his every word is taken as law by some. I think it's making him lazy. I don't see the insight and wonder for the science of the natural world that used to so impress me about him. I like the majority of what he says to his daughter and I've discussed this letter with my own daughter. Her view is that I've pretty much said the same things to her but, she says, she's grown up with an open view of religion than she feels Mr D's letter indicates she might have if my attitude had been the same as his.

I think telling children there's no such thing as God is as bad as filling children with notions of strict religion. Simply because we don't know for certain.
Children can be told of religions in a way of making up their own mind as they grow. That way they aren't following their parent's belief, though no doubt many will do this to start with. |

You'd have come up that notion without knowing anything about traditional gods then?? Do you think anyone, anywhere who had grown up in the last 30 years with a modern education but with no exposure to gods or religion would choose to invent their own god to believe in? |

I agree with this. Although i dont think Dawkins or anyone else here is suggesting we teach non-belief. If we raise children to have a respect and understanding of what constitutes good evidence the rest shoud fall into place naturally |
