I live in Somerset and we have had the Somerset hum since I was kid. There have been many theories as to what the cause is but nothing has ever been proved only that it does exist. Ok, it can be explained away with so many suggestions but again, nothing concrete. I have heard it; it’s there all around you, coming from the ground, the air and from the very fabric of the buildings. But, it stays with you, even when you are miles away from anything man made. And then, it disappears! smile.gif

I've been aware of a very low hum/rumble over the past few days. I can hear it now actually.

99% was a lot of viral twaddle that bounced around the internet back in January, the rest were copycat hoaxes. For those aware of other sounds I'm sure you can find a natural explanation if you put your thinky cap on.

Hmm. Not quite so cut and dried. You may be right, but that hasn't been proven one hundred percent. Even the Huff Post won't come out and say that.

Does that mean all the "strange sounds" videos are fake? No. Who knows? Maybe some of them are real. Maybe there's a legitimate scientific explanation. Maybe they're part of some clever guerrilla marketing campaign for a Cloverfield-style movie. But some of them very clearly are hoaxes. It is incredibly easy to do. All you need is a camera, an iTunes-like video editor, and a YouTube account. That's it.

I'm sure it is, Ron. And I'm sure Duck's right when he says that a lot of them have been debunked. But to take 'a lot of them ' or even 'most of them' and call it good for all of them is inaccurate.

And, of course, there's always my favourite mysterious sound of all time - The Bloop!.

The bloop page won't open for me. I'll try again later.

There were all sorts of scientists trying to tell us what the Somerset hum could be, one even suggested it was tintnitus! That would have meant that three quarters of the population of Somerset had suddenly been affected with the condition! laugh.gif

It was then suggested that the military were responsible, being quite close to Salisbury Plain. Had they approached the military authorities first, they might have got a better response but, they (the scientists) just decided to take it upon themselves to suggest it was some sort of (secret) military experiment being carried on the Plain. Needless to say, the military took umbrage against this and retaliated by inviting those concerned to investigate. Long story short, it was nothing to with the military! In fact, at one point even they launched their own investigations to try and discover the source. But to no avail!

If it’s an alien invasion, they have taken fifty odd years to get here to my knowledge and I’ll not be heading for the hills anytime soon.

As far as I can tell, it hasn't reached south Somerset yet.

Not everybody can hear it. And I've not heard about it for some time now.

Maybe strength of belief is a factor.

Why is this in the 'paranormal' section? What's the paranormal claim?

There you go. It's in 'paranormal because it's 'unexplained'.

It's unexplained because there are many possible explanations, not that no explanations can be given. wink.gif
