if i remember right solar flares do affect power supplies in Canada and northern states in the USA causing black outs in large areas

whats it going to do with sat naves cell phones

The science bit.
The Earths magnetospere will deflect most of the nasty radiation that gets here, it's one of the reasons that Earth had been able to develop life, Mars on the other hand has got a strangely low magnetic field and is bombarded with solar radiation which is bad news for the developement of life.
We will be fine, the Sun has been doing this for billions of years and it hasn't irradiated us yet!
