I don't know if any of you have had your local elections yet but we have ours on Thursday. Problem is who to vote for. We only have three parties to choose from BNP, Conservative and Labour.

I was hoping for some new party to vote for. As it stand I don't want to vote for any of these. So what to do - not vote at all, or vote for the lesser of three evils - whichever that is laugh.gif

You're right - they all lie! I wonder if there'll ever come a day when those who get to the top will be like 'real' people who are more concerned for us than their ego.

I am surprised that only three are standing. Aren't there any Independent standing?

No. I was surprised when I saw just three on my mum and dad's postal vote.

This year I doubt very much I'll be bothering. Not a lot to choose between those rolleyes.gif

Please vote, but spoil your paper. Everyone who cannot, or doesn't want to vote should spoil their paper.

The amount of invalid votes are always disclosed. It won't be many, but at least you know your vote is counted. I wish everyone would do it rather than not vote.

Well by the rtime I got to the polling staition I had decided to use my vote against the government to show my discontent - along with many others going from the count.

Labour got to take over Derby and it gained more seats in Amber valley - my area. It resulted in Conservative holding 23 seats and Labour 21, so not quite there but they have gained seats. Not sure how many. No other parties got a seat. Just Conservative and Labour.

I think I saw a headline on Sky on the way in here saying Cameron has apologised to the people. Let's hope this kicks ass and has them looking out for us instead of against us.

Well, we can live in hope, can't we laugh.gif

This is the problem with local elections. It should be about local issues but isn't. It is also a good illustration about all that is wrong with our democracy. Having contrary councils will just help make things worse for the locals.

Ignorance.

Maybe if they got their act together at the top matters would work out more fairly further down the scale.

There are several problems.

We and they are human.
It could be a lot worse.
No-one, or nothing is perfect.

The problem with voting on national issues, is that you could possibly cut off your nose to spite your face.

The council will take between 1 and 3 grand of your money, yet few people care to understand who they are voting for in local elections. One's protest vote could quite easily see a competent councillor replaced by someone not so good, charged with spending your money wisely. All for a protest vote.

I vote in all elections, based on the principal that if you don't vote, you can't moan about who gets in. I vote consistently for the same party because I agree with their ethos. Having an opposition local council is just one of those things that happens with our current electoral system. Besides which, the local councilors for my chosen party, do a good job locally, no matter who the ruling political party is.

on local elections should you vote bt the party you like or the person that is going to the best for your local area

when we vote it's all down to trust
trust the person we vote for to do the things they say thay are going to do, not just toe the party line when they get in or i am all right now jack

That's right, Patrick, but I rarely vote on the promises they make during the election process. I vote on long term track record.

It's laughbale in our area just before the elections. We have the road sweeper doing its rounds, the gardners doing a tidy up. This year we were told just a few weeks ago that we're all having a proper bin to put our recycables in instead of little orange and yellow boxes and two plastic bags. There was outrage when we had those little boxes and bags - no lids. People in terraced houses either had to leave them out front or carry them back and forth through their home. They also had little holes in so if it rains the water will collect amongst the tins or glass and pour all over the floor/ground on moving. At one time there was such anger over them that the councillors were holed up at their meeting on the market place because of the protestors outside. But they refused to give us a proper bin. After all these years we're actually getting one! Brill!!
