Description: More from the KF Unex Files.

In Brazil in August, 1966 the bodies of two men were found lying side by side on the side of a hill. There was no indication on the bodies as to how they died and no cause has been put forward since. It seems they both just dropped dead. Beside the bodies was an empty water bottle. Now, none of this sounds too weird until you take into account the fact that both men were wearing lead radiation masks. The two men were identified as local electronics technicians.

It seems that they had left the city of Campos dos Goytacazes stating that they had to go and buy some materials for their work. They caught a bus to Niterói and arrived at 2.30 in the afternoon. They bought waterproof coats and a bottle of water at a bar. One of the men seemed very nervous and kept looking at his watch. From the bar they went straight to the hill where they were found dead.

A small notebook was found with the bodies. The notes inside translate to:
16:30 be at the agreed place.

18:30 swallow capsules, after effect protect metals wait for the mask sign.

So. What effect were they waiting for?
What metals did they have to protect?
Who was going to give them the mask sign? (They must have got that since they were wearing the masks).
What were the pills which they'd obviously taken willingly? (They weren't expecting to be poisoned. No toxology was possible because the bodies were left too long before being properly examined).
Why did they just drop dead?
What were the radiation masks for?

No answers have ever been found.

How strange! Another mind boggling story. But I conclude Inspector Duck and detectives might have an answer for us!

I'm looking forward to Baldrick's take on it. :D

Sounds a lot like self poisoning heaven's Gate style. Perhaps some back ground on the two men's recreational activities and beliefs would shed some light on the case. I did find some of the original archive photos.

And this from a news translation

QUOTE

Both Manoel Pereira and Miguel José were avid UFO enthusiasts who were aware that 160 miles away was a recent UFO hotspot. Vintém Hill was known as a local UFO hotspot after many residents claimed to have witnessed strange aerial lights.

Perhaps they thought whatever it was they took would protect them from the harmful effects of the alien ship they expected to contact but instead fatally poisoned themselves. Starting to sense two Darwin award winners here.

Here's the rest of the archive photos.

Their actual jobs were TV repair men.

The makeshift lead masks, not exactly Hazmat suits :)

And the news report describing who and how they were found.

QUOTE

It’s 1966, Jorge da Costa Alves finds himself flying a kite one afternoon in the nearby Vintém Hill, in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As the 18 year old Jorge walks around Vintém Hill, he makes the macabre discovery of two bodies laying side by side in the tall weeds. The bodies were of two men, who appeared to be dressed identically. Both men were dressed in matching suits and wore impermeable coats. Which wasn’t out of the ordinary since the area had been drenched by recent showers.

No! Were they? Oh well ... it's still a juicy one. There must have been a third party involved mustn't there - to give them the instructions. Where did the pills come from. I like the UFO involvement though. dddalek

It's weird how they were found and especially those lead masks. You could be right Duck, but it does make me wonder if they'd actually made contact with someone because of them saying about the sign for the masks. Very odd!

Duck - July 14, 2012 09:30 AM (GMT)
I know, there was a lot in that original article you posted that set up a lot of preconceptions 'Electrical technicians' sounds a lot more official than local Tv repair men. And radiation masks conjurers up images of Xfiles Haz Mat suits

I'd say it was more a sad tale of two men caught up in their personal fantasy fuelled by the local buzz about UFO's.

Yes, but I wonder just what were these strange aerial lights people had spoken of?

Duck - July 14, 2012 09:42 AM (GMT)

You find some. I'm running out of ideas here. :D

Trouble is my critical filter gets in the way. Cracked is a pretty good source for making me work though as they can be quite sceptical when they want to be.

Les - July 15, 2012 09:09 AM (GMT)
Never mind your critical filter! A mystery's a mystery without the magical ingredient of ... proof.
