Title: Laptop wireless

lifesmate - December 11, 2011 07:56 AM (GMT)
I have been given a laptop but it wont connect to the net.
Tells me the radio has been switched off and to press fn and f2.I do that but nothing happens.

Now being fick when it comes to computers...I am probably not pressing them correctly. Do I press f then n then f2 or what?

Its not picking up on any wireless signals at all.Oh and it does say on the taskbar that the radio is on..well it has a tick.

I was pressing f then n.

Just going to try it.

Oh lord... Laughing man it says press fn + f2.I have pressed one then the other then both together but nothing happens.

What operating system are you using? I've come across a few laptops with Vista that just won't connect to wireless, despite applying the Microsoft fixes.

Both laptops have to connect directly to the router with a network cable to get on the net.

You would HOLD the Fn, then while you HOLD the Fn key, you HIT the F2 key. This usually toggles a light on and off.

What is the model of your Notebook?

Is your wireless adaptor installed?
1 RIGHT-CLICK your Network icon on the Desktop and SELECT Properties.

2 SELECT the link in the left hand panel that says: Manage network connections.

3 Do you see an icon that says Wireless Network Connection?
I'll repeat this for anyone else seeking advice, please state your computer model number and what the operating system is.

I dont know what the model is.Its a very old dell. Laughing man
How would I find it.?

I have done the fn f2 as you said and a little light did flash but still nothing

It tells me the radio is switched off and I wont be able to access wireless until I turn it on with fn and f2.

I am off now but will try what you said when I can and see what I can find out.

Thanks Rusty..much appreciated.

The 'little light' will need to be on for it to stand a chance of working.

To find the model, here's a link: http://www.parts-people.com/find_model.htm

Report all three.

Funnily enough I repaired a Dell laptop last night. It wasn't fn and f2 to turn on the wireless it was shift and f2. Is the laptop giving you the message that it fn and f2? If it is that should be the correct key combo.

If you keep pressing the combination with out a pause you could be turning in on and then off again. The Dell last night after holding (in this case) the shift and then pressing f2 you had to wait a couple of seconds. if you press it again it will just turn it off again. The key combo toogles the wireless on and off

On the face of it that seems like a fault with the Notebook.

This is a link to the manuals. If you download the HTML (there are two), then you will need to unzip the download into a folder and look for the file called index.htm and open it with your Internet browser.

Thank you rusty. I went to the link and it said.

For all operating systems except Microsoft® Windows® XP, you can download the optional User's Guide Viewer, which provides an interface for viewing HTML documents installed on your hard drive. For Windows XP, all documents installed on your hard drive can be viewed through the Help and Support Center.

Mine is xp.I have looked on the help and support. :(

You don't need to do that, just create a folder on your desktop and save the HTML zip files to it, then unzip the files in that folder (usually just double click it and follow the instructions). Then when the files have been unpacked, just double click the index.htm file.

See the download links labelled:
User's Guide (3.99 MB)
Service Manual (3.37 MB)
