Some kids say that the books that they assign in school are extremely boring, but i think the majority are actually interesting! the classics are odyssey, poe, and gatsby. are there any really interesting ones that your school asks you to read?

The books assigned at my school included: Life of Pi, Gatsby, Balzac and the Little Chinese Mistress, The Sound of Waves, Kitchen, etc. I guess they weren't so bad... but I haven't picked up any of these books in a while.

It depends on what kind of books you like and what school you go to. I remember having to read Animal Farm and Huckleberry Finn back in 8th grade and I hated them with a burning passion. Mostly because I couldn't understand half of the things that were going on in Huck Finn and I was not interested in communist, personified animals in Animal Farm. The last great book that I've read for school was The Downsiders. And that was in 7th grade. Everything else was meh and boring.

Um, depends on the book itself and how the teacher disscusses the book with you. I hated Call of the Wild, Romeo and Juliet, The Pearl, and The Old Man and the Sea. (I still do not believe he was a Christ figure. Oh, he dropped the boat 9 times and that is divisable by 3 so it makes it a Christ figure? Bull roar I say!) But I did enjoy And Then There Were None, Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes, and The Great Gatsby. My teacher for junior and senior year was awesome. I still remember that the eyes of Dr. T J Eckleberg were the eyes of God.

Hmm, I've read Tom Sawyer, The Pigman, Pride and Prejudice, Ruby Holler, Othello, The Outsiders, The Merchant of Venice at school. I mostly liked them...well, except for the Merchant of Venice as our teacher showed us the movie before reading the book. >_> But, Pride and Prejudice came to be one of my favorite books. :D

Off-topic: I actually had to write a book for my school...when I was in Grade 3, but still it was about 15 pages long. xD And they kind of published it and it's probably still in the school library there. =D

I absolutely loved The Giver, The Things They Carried, The Nature and Aim of Fiction, Dandelion Wine.. I really enjoyed Shakespear (hamlet, romeo and juliet) once we started to actually break down his words and it began to make sense.. the man's brilliant. I never got to read Gatsby, which is a horrible shame, as I wish I couldve read it with the support of an instructor and classroom behind it.. =( There were many others that I really enjoyed and was thankful to be "forced" to read them.

At the same time.. there are some books that I hated. Bean Trees.. I think it was called? Didnt hate, but also didnt really like Their Eyes Were Watching God.. among many others...

i have nothing against school assigned books. i once took a literature of the holocaust class in high school and i'm so glad i did because i wound up reading books [such as Night and Twilight by Elie Wiesel, If this is a Man by Primo Levi] that i never would have on my own, due to the heavy subject matter. and despite it being a hs english class, that was probably one of the best english courses i've ever taken.

The books we've been assigned to read in school were really interesting, but they were hard to read because we have such a heavy work load. =.=

I liked The Secret Garden, The Giver, To Kill A Mockingbird, Memoirs of a Geisha, and the White Tiger.

The Giver was awesome. It made me read Gathering Blue and The Messenger, which were equally awesome. I highly recommend it!

Bleeghh. I totally wanted to burn my Great Gatsby book.
There was nothing I liked!
Most of the characters were just awful (in personality anyway).
But I loved loved The Count of Monte Cristo <3
Which I recommend btw. Vengence is sweet~ c:

I think it depends on the teacher. There were quite a few books I didn't like, I guess cos they were force reading materials. It was very hard to get started in any of those books cos they're not what I am into.

@bwainz: You got to read Memoirs of a Geisha in class? SO LUCKY.

I went to one of those supposedly good high schools (even though we weren't, at all), so they made us read really academic/classic books.

So, I've read Shakespeare: A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Merchant of Venice, Macbeth, and Othello. Of those plays, I liked Othello the best because my teacher played a recording with good voice actors, which made it very interesting to listen to.

I love Shakespeare, so those were okay, but I hated Charles Dickens. Did not like Great Expectations and only until I got to end of A Tale of Two Cities did I like that novel. I think Sydney Carton's sacrifice is so inspiring (I wrote one of my college essays on that book).

@AirBrushSkies: Totally agree with you on The Great Gatsby. Morons, that book was filled with morons. I can't feel sympathy for a character who pines after a shallow, stupid woman.

Other titles I did not like: The Metamorphosis and the Stranger. I can't appreciate the writing style or the plots.

The only one I ever found interesting was the Odyysey but some not so good ones were Life of Galileo, Oliver Twist kurou04.gif , Swiss Family Robinson.

I had: The Giver, Freak the Mighty, Cowboys don't cry and we're currently on the Hunger Games. Even though I read that a year ago kurou17.gif

I've read high school novel studies because my brother's books were just lying around... So I've read To Kill A Mockingbird which was pretty awesome. Pride and Prejudice was nice too except the olden language was awful to try and understand. kurou04.gif I've read some Dan Brown books too kurou13.gif They're pretty intense and so full of ancient knowledge which I liked. 'Cause I'm a history nerd kurou24.gif
