This is such an old topic... oh well Books are awesome. Though even if I say that, I don't usually like the books I have to read for school. Whether it's because it's associated with school or because they're just not the type of books I would pick from bookshelves myself...I'm not too sure- maybe it's a combination of the two. I have to admit though some aren't actually too bad, especially after learning the connections with the content and context around the books and seriously thinking about the issues and perspectives they explore. This year I've read The Crucible (it's actually a play) by Arthur Miller, The Great Gatsby, Hamlet, If on a winter's night a traveler by Italo Calvino and The French Lieutenant's Woman by John Fowles. As reading material, I personally don't like these books much but at the same time, they're actually not too bad. Oh yeah, I haven't read this yet but I'll have to read the Fiftieth Gate later on in the year. It's got something to do with the Holocaust from what I've heard. A school book which I do recommend is, To Kill a Mockingbird.

Lets see, the big ones for me were Hatchet (Had to read three different times) and the Grapes of Wrath where we devoted almost an entire semester to it.

Interesting how different the asigned Books are in different Countries. I had to read Steppenwolf, Siddharta and Demian by Hermann Hesse, Faust I and II by Goethe, The Visit (Der Besuch der Alten Dame) and The Pledge: Requiem for the Detective Novel (Das Versprechen) and The Physicists (Die Physiker) by Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Then there was The Trial (Der Prozess) and The Metamorphosis (Die Verwandlung) by Franz Kafka (Ugh...cant stand his works.). Then Animal Farm by Orwell, The Catcher in the Rye (der Fänger im Roggen) by Salinger, Lay down your Arms! (Die Waffen nieder!) by Bertha von Suttner, All Quiet on the Western Front (Im Westen nichts neues) by Erich Maria Remarque. some Works of Schiller (The Robbers and Intrigue and Love), Nathan the Wise (Nathan der Weise) by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and About a boy by Nick Hornby. My favourite was by far The Age of the Fish (Jugend ohne Gott) by Ödön von Horváth. This book is awesome. I love it. My teacher was a huge fan of Goethe so we had to read many Poets and so on from him. But most of the time i was happy with the Bookselection we had to read. As far as i know, theres an official booklist out there from the minister, what reading material is a must. Oh i forgot another book, its really good. I Loved it. Bahnwärter Thiel by Gerhard Hauptmann. In English we had mostly Poes Works assigned. And the Nick Hornby. (I love Poe. )
