A few are fine, like Jane Eyre (one of my favorite classics) and Great Expectations, though most aren't to my taste. Like Candide, and A Call to Arms. Currently reading The Stranger for AP lit, so I have no solid opinion of it yet.

I think it really depends on the book, the teacher, and the student. I remember reading the Scarlet Letter in 11th grade and hating it because I hated my English teacher. I hated reading Lord of the Flies because I had to read it in 6th grade, which is way to early for that kind of book in my opinion. I hated all of the books I read in 8th grade because in every single one of them the main character either died, killed a whole ton of people and went psycho, lost their entire family in a tragedy, or accidentally killed their best friend... I still think our teacher was trying to depress us. But a lot of the books that I've been assigned have ended up being on my Favorites Shelf, so I dunno.

It depends on the book and subject! if it's a Literature class then i have no problem reading the books assigned but if it's a textbook, i literally keep falling asleep and it takes me a long long time to finish reading the whole book! Especially Law books, i have a difficult time understanding and finishing the whole book!

QUOTE (xLyrie @ Jan 27 2011, 12:46 AM)
I had: The Giver, Freak the Mighty, Cowboys don't cry and we're currently on the Hunger Games. Even though I read that a year ago kurou17.gif

I've read high school novel studies because my brother's books were just lying around... So I've read To Kill A Mockingbird which was pretty awesome. Pride and Prejudice was nice too except the olden language was awful to try and understand. kurou04.gif I've read some Dan Brown books too kurou13.gif They're pretty intense and so full of ancient knowledge which I liked. 'Cause I'm a history nerd kurou24.gif

I read Beowulf, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Macbeth, and to Kill A Mockingbird in middle school too! Sadly, I enjoyed them a bit (horrifyingly).

To me they were mostly boring with a few good ones thrown in. One I really liked was Where the Red Fern Grows.

This is such an old topic... oh well kurou02.gif Books are awesome.

Though even if I say that, I don't usually like the books I have to read for school. Whether it's because it's associated with school or because they're just not the type of books I would pick from bookshelves myself...I'm not too sure- maybe it's a combination of the two.

I have to admit though some aren't actually too bad, especially after learning the connections with the content and context around the books and seriously thinking about the issues and perspectives they explore.

This year I've read The Crucible (it's actually a play) by Arthur Miller, The Great Gatsby, Hamlet, If on a winter's night a traveler by Italo Calvino and The French Lieutenant's Woman by John Fowles. As reading material, I personally don't like these books much but at the same time, they're actually not too bad.

Oh yeah, I haven't read this yet but I'll have to read the Fiftieth Gate later on in the year. It's got something to do with the Holocaust from what I've heard.

A school book which I do recommend is, To Kill a Mockingbird.

Lets see, the big ones for me were Hatchet (Had to read three different times) and the Grapes of Wrath where we devoted almost an entire semester to it.

We did a fair few books back in high school. We did a lot of Shakespeare (Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Othello and a few others), Tomorrow when the war began, The Cay, The Hobbit and a few Tim Winton novels like Cloudstreet (which is the only book I have ever fallen asleep reading LOL).

Can't say I liked most of them but some were most definitely worse than others for me LOL.

Interesting how different the asigned Books are in different Countries. I had to read Steppenwolf, Siddharta and Demian by Hermann Hesse, Faust I and II by Goethe, The Visit (Der Besuch der Alten Dame) and The Pledge: Requiem for the Detective Novel (Das Versprechen) and The Physicists (Die Physiker) by Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Then there was The Trial (Der Prozess) and The Metamorphosis (Die Verwandlung) by Franz Kafka (Ugh...cant stand his works.).
Then Animal Farm by Orwell, The Catcher in the Rye (der Fänger im Roggen) by Salinger, Lay down your Arms! (Die Waffen nieder!) by Bertha von Suttner, All Quiet on the Western Front (Im Westen nichts neues) by Erich Maria Remarque. some Works of Schiller (The Robbers and Intrigue and Love), Nathan the Wise (Nathan der Weise) by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and About a boy by Nick Hornby. My favourite was by far The Age of the Fish (Jugend ohne Gott) by Ödön von Horváth. This book is awesome. I love it.

My teacher was a huge fan of Goethe so we had to read many Poets and so on from him. But most of the time i was happy with the Bookselection we had to read. As far as i know, theres an official booklist out there from the minister, what reading material is a must.

Oh i forgot another book, its really good. I Loved it. Bahnwärter Thiel by Gerhard Hauptmann. In English we had mostly Poes Works assigned. And the Nick Hornby. (I love Poe. ) kurou02.gif
