Home of the Coal Miner's Daughter: Loretta Lynn Ranch near Nashville

Current Rating: 9.2

"Well, I was born a coal miner's daughter
In a cabin on a hill in Butcher Holler
We were poor, but we had love
That's the one thing that daddy made sure of
He shoveled coal to make a poor man's dollar..."

This is the beginning of one of the most famous country songs of all time, and was also the beginning of the life of one country music's most famous singers: Loretta Lynn. In her hit song Coal Miner's Daughter, Loretta Lynn sang of her beginnings in Butcher Holler, Kentucky, during the Depression, and her eventual rise to singing stardom. Today, visitors to the Nashville area can enjoy a real treat: Loretta Lynn shares her private ranch with the public, so that they can learn about her "rags-to-riches" story and enjoy the array of recreational activities on her 3,500-acre ranch.

Loretta Lynn Ranch, just 65 miles west of Nashville on I-40, is located in Hurricane Mills. There is plenty to do at the ranch, from learning about Loretta and country music to numerous recreational activities.

Activities at the ranch include camping and log cabin rentals, swimming, canoeing, playing horseshoes, paddle-boating and fishing for trout and bass. Horseback riding, buggy rides and bicycle rentals are also offered.

For those who want to learn more about Loretta Lynn and her journey to fame, there are several exhibits and facilities at the ranch that are open to the public for guided tours and unguided exploration. The well-organized tour should begin at the Butcher Holler House, a re-creation of Loretta's humble childhood home. For a glimpse at her modern life, there is the Plantation house, with 14 rooms. There is also an 18,000 square foot Coal Miner's Daughter Museum filled with memorabilia and awards celebrating her 52 Top 10 Hits, and 16 Number One Hits. Other ranch highlights include a grist mill, a replicated coal mine, a doll museum, and a mini-theater where guests can watch a movie about Loretta Lynn.

Loretta Lynn Ranch also hosts numerous concerts and events throughout the year, including Trail Rides, Motocross Competitions, Truck & Tractor Pulls and concerts (including an occasional performance by Loretta Lynn herself!).

Loretta Lynn Ranch is the perfect family destination or country music lover's site. With a combination of recreational activities and country music history, visitors to Nashville cannot afford to miss out on this gem.
