Wynonna Sings Holiday Notes From Home
Posted: October 7th, 2008 at 2:28 pm | By: Whitney Self

I can’t remember a holiday without the Judds. Last night, I had the true pleasure of seeing Wynonna Judd perform a Christmas special, Holiday Notes From Home: A Christmas Tribute for the Troops at the Grand Ole Opry House. Her mother Naomi even joined her onstage for a couple of the carols. I have to say, I was on a musical high when I left. Not only was I ready for Christmas, but Wynonna’s voice sounded so beautiful, so strong, that I spent the rest of the evening with goose bumps.

Around the holidays, there are certain family traditions that my family always carries out. For example, Christmas Eve dinner is spent at El Rancherito, we’ll laugh hysterically as to how my father is a mirrored image of Clark Griswold, and of course, Christmas Time With the Judds will be piped throughout the entire house from his dingy speakers. To this day whenever I hear the Judds, they still take me home.

But the Judds weren’t singing through old and worn-out speakers last night and though I was there, they sure weren’t singing just for me either. Instead, backed by the band of the Air Force Reserve and the Air Force Strings, they were singing for all of the soldiers that won’t make it home for the holidays. (The concert will air on the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service later this year.) My only hope is that the Judds will take those soldiers home when they see this, even if only for a moment, like they did for me last night.

Wynonna Revisits Her Past with a New Album
Judd Sister Brings Personality, Passion, and New Tunes to the Granada
By Brett Leigh Dicks

Thursday, October 23, 2008

In a world driven by identity, you know that you have really left your mark when you can get away with using just your first name. In fact, when you talk about Beck, Bono, Elvis, Jewel, Madonna, or, of course, Wynonna, no introduction is really needed. Which means we probably don’t even need to tell you that, as part of the Judds, Wynonna amassed 14 number-one singles, her debut solo album yielded a further three and then went five times platinum, or that you can currently hear her dueting with Elvis. But we’re sure you will be thrilled to know that she is headed our way. On Monday, Wynonna will be gracing the stage of the Granada Theatre. And while most of her life might have been spent wandering, I recently learned that she has never lost track of who she is.

You are headed to Santa Barbara. Have you spent much time here? I’ve been everywhere at least twice! You know, I celebrate 25 years next year—that’s more than half of my life on the road. I’m at that point in my career where my fans are starting to bring their kids out to see me, you know what I mean?

Is that satisfying or scary? Both. But I think life is scary. I love Annie Lennox’s line about “dying is easy, it’s living that scares me.” It’s all part of the journey. Last week I was singing with Foreigner and was the rock ’n’ roll queen for a day. I was thinking, “How do I keep getting away with the things I get away with, the places I get to go, and the audiences I get to sing for?”

Wynonna performs at the Granada Theatre this Monday in support of her soon-to-be-released album of standards.

But you put in the hard yards early on? That must put things in perspective. I have a great perspective after being on the road all these years. I shared a bus with my mother for 10 years—I have earned my right to be wacky. Anyone who combs her mother’s hair every day for 10 years for free has to have fun—and I still do. It’s a real miracle. When I get on the plane to come out west, I’m always keenly aware this could be my last trip. I never have forgotten that. I think my perspective comes from years of being on the bus with my mum. She raised me to appreciate and understand that this is a journey and not a destination.

You alluded to some of your collaborations. Do you think those are a more worthy measure of your success than accumulating awards? That’s a really interesting question. I think it’s like getting up every morning and weighing yourself. Are you going to live by that number, or are you going to live by the fact that you have a family and people who you love? Getting to do the things I’ve gotten to do definitely is the glue that holds me together through all the seasonal changes. The awards, I think, really are more about my career and the band and the people who I work with. Everybody works so dang hard, and I’m the one who gets the fame and fortune. It keeps them going; it helps with the high fives.

Are there moments when you question if what you have achieved is in fact real? I tell you what, I’ve got quite a résumé and sometimes I look back over it and think, “How in the world did I get away with that?” It’s kind of like when you get into a party and you think, “How did I get in?” Do you ever feel that?

That’s pretty much every party I’ve ever been to. [Laughs.] Well, I’ve spent my whole career with that sense of “How did I get to sit next to Tina Turner at the awards show? How did that happen? Is it an alphabetical thing?”

I believe your forthcoming album has you performing standards that reflect your musical past. Why such an album and why now? Here’s the deal. I’m at a real crossroads in my life. Last year I’m thinking to myself, “Where am I?” And all of a sudden I started gravitating toward the past. I have such an incredible history of these songs being played in the background while I’m living my life. So the whole album is a real cross-section of all the different genres I grew up with. And it worked. I don’t know how it did, but it does, and I think it has to do with the instrument, the voice, and the interpretation. It’s all me, its all part of the tapestry of who I am.

When covering a song, is it hard to balance being true to its intent and putting your own mark on it? It was a real challenge to put my Wynnona-isms on the songs, and yet pay homage and make sure that the respect was there. I was very clear about not removing landmarks. You don’t go in and dig up the pyramids and replace it with a high-rise.

You’ve played with your mother, done acoustic tours, played with a band, and performed with symphonies. What drives such musical dexterity? Some people label it A.D.D! I think it comes from being raised in Appalachia on a mountain top without TV, without telephones, and then one day moving to Hollywood and walking past the Whisky A-Go Go on my way to grade school. My mom was such a gypsy and we woke up in so many different states…

Aside from Santa Barbara, another big show you have coming up is at the Grand Ole Opry for Armed Services Radio & Television. What does playing a show like that mean to you? When I was 18-years-old, my mom and I embarked upon our first US tour. I remember serving Thanksgiving dinner to Navy guys on a ship. My education began really early. I think every artist that gets signed should put in a year of community service. It gets you outside yourself and it allows you to step into other people’s lives. Let’s face it, this business is about being babied, and after while you’re drowning in a lake of yourself. These are ways to get out of the way of yourself.

What effect have experiences like these had upon you? It has changed my life. I’m not advocating that we be pro-war, but I’m talking about being pro-people. I am all about people and family.

And finally, I guess we should touch on the Elvis duet … Okay, so I’m checking my messages and there is Priscilla Presley. So I call her back and she says, “Will you sing a duet with Elvis?” I start laughing ’cause I thought, “What are the chances?” It’s on a Christmas record that’s coming out this year, and what’s funny about it is that I didn’t realize the song I chose [“Santa Clause Is Back in Town”] is basically about a guy coming through town trying to score a chick. I got so tickled and I said, “Priscilla, this is the raunchiest song on the record,” and she’s like, “I love it, I just love it.” Once again, I keep finding myself in these situations where I think, “How did I get here?”

4·1·1
Wynonna will perform at the Granada Theatre (1214 State St.) on Monday, October 27, at 8 p.m. Call 899-2222 or visit granadasb.org for tickets.

Wynonna puts Christmas dates under the tree
Published October 30, 2008 06:10 AM
By Tjames Madison / LiveDaily Contributor

Wynonna Judd [ tickets ] will celebrate the holiday season on the road this year, with a slate of Christmas dates lined up ahead of her new album of standards, which is due early next year.

The singer kicks off her "Classic Christmas Tour" Nov. 26 in Snoqualmie, WA, with the bulk of the 18-city trek coming to West Coast venues. She'll also polish off a few non-holiday shows in mid-November, including a Nov. 13 date in Englewood, NJ. The complete schedule is included below.

The singer's latest single, a duet with Elvis Presley on "Santa Claus is Back in Town," is featured on the recently released "Elvis Presley Christmas Duets," which showcases the King in archival recordings paired with modern hit-makers. The holiday fling with Presley follows Judd's own holiday collection from two years ago, "A Classic Christmas," which featured the performer's takes on yuletide favorites including "The Christmas Song," "Winter Wonderland" and "Ave Maria."

"People always ask me, 'if you had one choice to work with anyone, who would it be?'" said Wynonna in a press statement, "and I always say Elvis of course! It is a dream come true to have had the opportunity to actually record this song and hear my voice with his--it's something I never really thought could be possible, and I am so grateful that it did."

The singer continues work on her seventh studio album, the follow-up to 2003's "What The World Needs Now Is Love." The forthcoming set, which will mix acoustic music with blues, torch ballads and Wynonna's own songwriting, is due in February, according to her record label.

"It's music from my past, literally," the singer recently told the Las Vegas Sun. "My experiences along life's highways is what this record is about. The album is all of the rich stories I have experienced growing up and in my adult life. It's a reflection of all my past experiences with other artists and different stories along the way."

Wynonna Wants to Put You in a Headlock
Posted: February 3rd, 2009 at 11:10 am | By: Craig Shelburne

Wynonna’s roots are showing on her new album, Sing Chapter 1. In addition to some handpicked blues and rock covers, she also reinterprets country classics from the likes of Merle Haggard, Hank Williams and Tammy Wynette.

“There’s a moment in my show when I get to talk about the history of country music and that we’re losing our legends,” she says. “And the fact is, Merle has one of the greatest voices of all time. If you listen to his catalog, I’m going to tell you what — there is nobody better. And the next generation of country music listeners — in my opinion, without getting on my soapbox — needs to hear this music. They need to know where we’ve come from. A lot of these whippersnappers today, they probably don’t know much about him. And I just want to get them in a headlock and say, ‘Come with me for a week,’ and show them the way of where we’ve come from.”

Wynonna Reflects on Past, Honors Music Legends with 'Sing'
By Mary Morningstar
Washington
02 March 2009

People are often reminded of events in their lives by songs they hear on the radio. Wynonna had that theme in mind for her new album, Sing, which she describes as a soundtrack of her life.

The Kentucky native first appeared on the Country chart in 1983 as a member of The Judds, a duo that also featured her mother Naomi. After Naomi was diagnosed with hepatitis in 1991, Wynonna launched a solo career.

It took Wynonna a year-and-a-half to choose the 12 tracks for her seventh album, Sing. She covers songs from pop and Country to soul and blues-rock. Wynonna says they deal with a wide variety of emotions.

"This album is about joy and sorrow, love lost, love won, being a mother, being on the mountain, feeling victorious," she said. "Then, the very next second, praying to God like heck that I make the right choice for my kids."

"Sing" includes Wynonna's version of the Boswell Sisters' 1932 classic, "That's How Rhythm Was Born." She also recorded songs made famous by Hank Williams, Tammy Wynette, Bill Withers and Nat "King" Cole, among others. As she celebrates a quarter of a century in the business, Wynonna felt it was important to honor some of music's legends.

"I think 25 years into this, I'm just now getting it - that we are to pay homage to the ones who came before us, which is what the CD does," she said. "And, also enjoy ourselves and celebrate. We have a lot to celebrate."

Wynonna To Headline 25th Anniversary Music City July 4 Spectacular
Nashville will once again celebrate July 4th like only the Music City can – with great music and one of the nation’s best fireworks displays! Country music superstar Wynonna will headline the 25th anniversary of the “Music City July 4th: Let Freedom Sing!” celebration in Riverfront Park. The show line-up will also include The Gabe Dixon Band, the Grammy-winning Nashville Symphony Orchestra (NSO) and Nashville actor Barry Scott. The world-renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers will perform the national anthem.

“Singing with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra? My favorite. Being in Nashville for the July 4th weekend with my family to celebrate the South’s largest fireworks display? Even better. Using my gift to encourage and inspire others during this tough economic time? My purpose. This event is the total package for me and I’m going to sing it like nobody’s business,” said Wynonna.

Downtown festivities will begin at noon with the free Family Fun Zone featuring inflatables for all ages, sponsored by Coca-Cola. Pre-show live music will take place from 3 - 6 p.m. on the NowPlayingNashville.com stage. The official two-hour concert will kick off at 7 p.m. CST and will conclude with the South's largest fireworks show at approximately 9:10 p.m. arranged by Pyro Shows and choreographed to music by the NSO. All events are free and open to the public.

“Only in Nashville can friends and family spend the 4th of July at a free concert with a neighbor, who happens to be a multi-platinum, ground-breaking superstar like Wynonna,” said Mayor Karl Dean. “Independence Day is about joining together in celebration of our freedoms and our country, and at the riverfront in downtown Nashville it’s also about celebrating Music City.”

“Nashville’s July 4th celebration is one of the city’s biggest events each year,” said Butch Spyridon, president, Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau. “The celebration has become a tradition for locals and a must-see for visitors, drawing approximately 100,000 people into our downtown each year.”

"Music City July 4th : Let Freedom Sing!" is produced by the Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau for the City of Nashville and sponsored by the City of Nashville, Metro Parks, 103 WKDF, 104.5 The Zone, Camper’s Corner, Coca-Cola and NowPlayingNashville.com.

Fireworks show goes on despite dampened mood
By Peter Cooper • THE TENNESSEAN • July 5, 2009

Pouring rain, applause, tears and pyrotechnics — Nashvillians celebrated the nation's birthday while they mourned the death of the Tennessee Titans' only Super Bowl quarterback.

Downtown, the "Let Freedom Sing" event found the nation's third-largest fireworks display taking place at 8:15 p.m., 45 minutes earlier than expected, as organizers worked to get the blasting done before the evening was fully saturated.
The day dawned clear, with crowds dotting the Riverfront Park hill before 9 a.m., but choppy weather moved in during the early evening.
By then, many were aware that Steve McNair had been found shot to death in a downtown condo. The city's 25th annual downtown Fourth of July celebration took place just across the Cumberland River from LP Field, where McNair led the Titans to so many victories, and within walking distance of the condominium complex where McNair was killed.
Master of ceremonies Storme Warren wore a Titans jersey and asked for a moment of silence in McNair's memory, though performances from Wynonna Judd, The Grascals, the Gabe Dixon Band and others sought to entertain rather than remember. The Fisk Jubilee singers sang the national anthem, and a mixed audience of Nashvillians and out-of-towners cheered music that ranged from traditional bluegrass to rock 'n' roll.
"We sound-checked at
9 a.m., and there were already people on the hill," said mandolin player Danny Roberts of The Grascals. "It seems like they're ready for whatever music gets played."
Judd, who sang four songs before rough weather mandated that the fireworks commence, began her early afternoon with an autograph signing at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, where she entertained her public with conversation and even song.
"I told her it was my birthday, and she sang the 'Happy Birthday' song to me while she signed an autograph," said Carole Woods, of Grand Rapids, Mich.
Along Lower Broadway, police blocked off portions of the street, and vendors hawked grilled chicken, fried catfish and stress tests.
On the riverfront, country stars Martina McBride and Keith Urban spoke of their love for Nashville on the video screens that dominated each side of the stage. And visitors awaited the bang and sparkle.
"I wanted to be here for the fireworks," said Lynn Freshman of Pittsfield, N.Y. "I know we have fireworks in New York, but it's been cool there all spring. This is warm. And I love the music here."
The music continued, though at times it competed with the low-level hum of helicopters hovering above the McNair crime scene.
"I met him once, at the Walgreens in Bellevue," Rex Crawford said.
"He was looking at this Titans golf towel, and it seemed funny, because I knew he had his pick of any Titans merchandise he wanted. I said, 'Hey, Steve,' and he said, 'Hey, how are you?' He was real friendly."
The fireworks flurry began at 8:15 p.m., and onlookers watched the finale through heavy rain.

Wynonna pushes 'Sing' outing into late fall
Published October 15, 2009 06:10 AM

Wynonna [ tickets ] will continue supporting "Sing: Chapter 1," her first new studio set in six years, with an extended North American tour.

The Kentucky-based songstress, who is celebrating her 25th year in country music, has unveiled a slate of 16 fall shows, beginning with a Nov. 6 performance in Prior Lake, MN. The trek winds through the nation, visiting casinos and theaters through the two-night conclusion (12/19-12/20) in Las Vegas. Details are included below.
"Sing: Chapter 1," Wynonna's seventh solo set, surfaced in February and peaked at No. 5 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart. The mostly-covers album features songs from Burt Bacharach ("Anyone Who Had a Heart"), Hank Williams ("I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"), Merle Haggard ("Are the Good Times Really Over") and Stevie Ray Vaughan ("The House Is Rockin'), as well as one original song, "Sing," which was written by fellow country singer Rodney Crowell.

"All my musical chapters are here--every genre," the performer explained in a message posted at her website. "These are the songs that have moved me ever since I was a little girl. These are the songs I have turned to for comfort and insight at every point of my life."

Wynonna Judd Returns to Her Roots on the 67th Annual Santa Train

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Country music superstar Wynonna Judd will revisit her Appalachian childhood when she joins CSX, Food City and the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce as the special guest on the 2009 Santa Train.

Wynonna, a native of Ashland, Ky., is celebrating the release of her recent album, Sing: Chapter 1, and the anniversary of her 25th year in the music business. In celebration of the holiday season, Wynonna will launch her third annual ‘A Classic Christmas’ tour the weekend after Thanksgiving.

“Sharing the joy of the season with children who grew up just like I did is something that I am so privileged to have the opportunity to do,” Wynonna said. “Appalachia has always been close to my heart, and participating in the Santa Train is something very special to me.”

The Santa Train will make 14 stops in the mountains of Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee on Nov. 21, 2009. Wynonna, along with Santa Claus and volunteers from CSX, Food City and the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce, will deliver 15 tons of toys, including six pallets donated by the Children’s Miracle Network, to thousands of residents who live along the route. This year will commemorate the 67th anniversary of the Santa Train.

Wynonna also has previous ties to the Santa Train through her mother, Naomi Judd, who rode the train in 2005 and passed down some of her fond memories of that day to her daughter.

“With more than 30 million records sold worldwide, we are honored to have Wynonna aboard this year’s Santa Train,” said Tori Kaplan, director of corporate citizenship and special events for CSX. “We know she will brighten everyone’s spirits in these tough economic times.”

Patty Loveless, Alison Krauss, Naomi Judd, Travis Tritt and Kathy Mattea are among the celebrity guests who have participated in the Santa Train in recent years. Several governors, U.S. senators, representatives, and other local, state and federal officials have also participated in this annual event.

“The Santa Train means so much to the city of Kingsport,” Miles Burdine, Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce president and CEO, said. “Adding Wynonna to the list of prestigious celebrity guests only adds to the legacy of this special event.”

“Being able to be a part of this project is a privilege for Food City, and we are so pleased to share it with Wynonna this year,” said Ed Moore, Kingsport’s Food City manager. “We know that she will brighten the Christmas season for so many.”
