I've added a few words to the wordfilter, and this change is also in line with the new rule revisions due to come out before long. It's bad enough as is... but... with absolutely NO references on the page, and with no real reason other than previous use seen on the Void... this Ad came up:

.................

........

I'm gonna stop this now, before it gets any worse. dry.gif

The "word" has been added to the filters.

GoogleAds works primarly by scanning pages of a site, and generating results for specific pages based upon the words/content found in the page. It takes the most repeated onstructs and assume tht's part of the topic on that page.

It also stores these values for the site, so if it can't generate any appreciable result, it can also take from a pool of "topics" it thinks that will go with the site's content.

The "ad" in my first post has nothing to do with the other sites people visit, at least in our cases. Myself and a few others (like Kingskully) have had an ad like this turn up, only because of exposure to the word being mentioned... specifically on the Void.

Edit: And as a side note to show this, I'm looking at the ads for this thread now. One is some show called the "L word"... (no idea what that is)... Then another one is a for some site offering a download of Microsoft Word. Then... on a refresh.. one of the other adds... and one talking about faith and the bible. This probably has to do with a scan finding the combination "The Word" (linke in a reference to The Word of God).

Since "word" is the most common construct in this topic.. the ads are reflecting that.
It's also matching the word "ban" with RayBan sunglasses.

you mean we can't say the word !!!!?.... Jesus, we really can't. Whats with that? Whats wrong with that word? Some people are !!!!, good for them, and Google sent a advert with a targtet audience very unrealistic at this forum, so what? What if a homosexual person does come to this forum and is very offended that you blocked the word !!!!? What if someone blocked the word "geek", or "punk" or "gamer", they're all similiar labels. They may not refer to sexuality, but the point would be null if I said "straight" since that's not a commonly used term here.

I mean really, really really, whats wrong with the word !!!!? No 8-year-old is going to click on a advert for a !!!! commnity and find crazy !!!! pron, besides Google Ads have tons of stuff that could, if you searched them, have things innapropriate for the void. Example; "Heavy metal- Date hundereds of Thousands of Gothic Friends and Singles." That advert alone is far more ill-implied than a !!!! community advert. Are you going to block the word goth so that that doesn't appear? What if a "find geek chicks in you area!" advert appears, is the word "geek" going too?

Wow. I'd never heard Fort rant. UNTIL NOW.

Anyway, I partially agree with him, but you have to remember, Fort, IB is a decent man. He won't ban every word in every bad ad he sees, he just wants to stop these ads before they lead to something innapropriate.

So...

!!!!?

EDIT: Lol, that is awesome.

EDIT2: A good point, DK. Who does read ads?

No you can't.

I'd like to avoid worse ads.... I don't know the extent of content which GoogleAds allows. Maybe most don't read them, but I know some do. There have been topics about it all before, and have even had people mention the ads. But even that.. I personally don't really care much about.

It's more for the members... And it's not about the kids, it's about the parents. Parents often put internet filters, blocks, etc... And young members having their view of the Void blocked... or getting into trouble because of the alerts their internet filtering is setting off... isn't fair either.

Sure, maybe the parents are being unreasonable in your eyes... but do you REALLY need to say the word? What the hell is the point of it? And tell you what... if a homosexual DOES come to the board and ask what's the deal?

I'll tell them flat out that there were members of the board using the term as a derogatory word for general things.... often completely unrelated to the "classification" of it. The members also use the word in negative light to the people it would be referring, so perhaps they should be glad I removed it.

And if they were going to involve that "aspect" into their board discussions?...
I would simply say one thing to them....

KYPOTB.

I didn't particularly want to.. but it BECAME an issue I was asked to deal with, so a decision had to be made. Looking at it, I decided that the ability for some members to browse the board without trouble was more important than you using a term as general slander and offensive remarks 95% of the time.

Don't give me any political or cultural BS... you should know me better than that.
This was done by the numbers, and was done for the board's membership.

Or perhaps you would like to explain to me how you being able to say that word in particular is so damned important.... that some members may get in trouble, and possibly have their access to the Void removed by their parents. Explain to me how that word is so relevant, why you have to say it, to justify doing that to them... and I'll consider what you have to say. Something tells me any arguement for keeping the word will be pretty weak, at least in light of the negatives.

It'd be different if removing a word in particular had a greater impact on the board...
... but I see no reason you have to keep this one.

umm, what's so offensive about a !!!! community?
chances are that there's at least 12 "!!!!" people in this community anyway.
I think that's digusting that you decided to block the word because of a link to another site.

also in my experience the voids adverts correspond with other sites that you've visited recently, something you're not telling us IB?

Its not the need to say the word itself, mainly the fact that it has been removed, TBH, and what that stands for. Afterall, Goth is a word 95% of the time used in a derogatory manner, and it brings up dating adverts. Then there's Emo. Thats being said more and more. Sooner or later people will start getting ads about "emo couples" and all that.
