This piece, much like most of my pieces, evolved as I worked on it. Each step included many fundamental changes to the piece to move it towards the final stage you see here.

Step one was basic loading, basic texturing and posing of the figures. It is in this stage where I work out the very basics of the scene composition. texturing is just really for reference at this point as most of it will be changed later on.
In step two I added some clothes and hair to the male figure. I also wanted to turn the skin on the robot white but I went a little overboard which was corrected in the final stage.
The final stage features a major restructuring of the poses of the characters, as well as the addition of shoes for the robot, Glasses for the male figure, retexturing, recoloring, new lighting, base and backdrop.

Texturing and lighting are major parts of 3D work as well. All told there are 131 material zones that received a texture (Each texture is built in photoshop and custom made to fit the scene.) There are 4 color settings for each zone as well as a reflection map, transparency map and bump map setting. The final addition is lighting to add ambiance to the scene. There are two global lights and three spot lights used in this scene. Below is a totally untextured version with minimal lighting of the final piece so you can see what really goes into building one of these.

I dont know about everyone else but this helps me a lot to see how this is made. How did you get those parts to glow like that?
