The Rules JOINING & OOC
READ all important topics before joining. Most of it is common sense, but we want to make sure we're all clear on the rules, okay guys?ROLEPLAY RULES
Your registration name cannot contain numbers or special characters, just your character's first and last name with the first letter capitalized. If you make a mistake, let an admin know and we'll fix it for you, but please just do it right the first time. An example of a correct name would be: Harry Potter.
Signatures should be no wider than 500 px. If it is bigger, it will be removed without warning.
Fonts should not be smaller than the automatic size on the board. Small fonts make one of our admins want to tear her hair out.
Don't bug people to post. Patience is a virtue.
Play nicely. Be nice to other users. Do not use derogatory remarks of any sort. Although you may IC, as long as it is clear that is your character doing so and is not an attempt to hit a soft spot OOC.
No godmodding. What is this? It means trying to control someone else's character without their permission. If your character tries to hit someone, then you must make an ATTEMPT. In other words, write something like.. Bob swings his fist and tried to punch Nick in the face.
No Mary-Sues. You can NOT be perfect. If your character is in a fight, let them get hit sometimes. Flaws speak more about a character than their strengths. Perfect characters are boring.
No metagaming. This is using information you learned OUT of character, IN character. You cannot take information you got from someones profile and use it IC.
While there is no word count, you need to have well versed posts. You need to have a minimum of four sentences a post (Roughly a paragraph). There is no max length.
Due to Invisionfree/Zetaboards rules, sexual conduct is NOT allowed. You may RP a little making out, or even suggest that your characters had sex but you may not roleplay it out. You can make out a bit, but no smex. SMEX IS BAD. NO SMEX. 'Kay?
Keep cursing to the minimum. An occasional curse word is fine, but don't curse like a sailor.
Respect OPEN vs. CLOSED topics, please.
Unforgivable curses can only be used by seventh years and older.
For disobeying MoM law (such as using Unforgivable Curses) you can get sent to Azkaban, however you can also escape from it as well.
If your character is caught disobeying Hogwarts rules such as curfew or going into the forbidden forest, the professors can give you detention that you must attend in character.
Frequently Asked Questions
So, we realize some things here at HSWW can get confusing
for some of you newbies out there. That's what this thread
is for. here are some of the questions that we want to answer
before we're asked.
UH... HI. I'VE NEVER BEEN ON SOMETHING LIKE THIS BEFORE. HOW DO YOU JOIN?
Well, first of all, hello and welcome to what we like to call forum roleplay! The first thing you need to do to join the fun is join the site. To do that, you hit register under the banner at the top left of the screen. Once you finish, us admins will review your account and see that it's correctly formatted. When you have been accepted you will receive an email about it, and then you're welcome to post your application under either unfinished or pending, depending on what applies to you. Once that's finished, an admin will review your application, sort you into the correct member group, and viola! You're ready to play.
OKAY, THAT'S GREAT BUT... WHAT THEN?
Then you go ahead and post with other members on the board. How that goes is that one member posts a topic, and then another member replies. If there are more than two members, it usually follows a posting order, as in: 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3 and so on and so forth, so everybody gets the same number of posts and equal appearance in the topic. If you're a newbie and you're still unsure about how to play, feel free to message Liz the Co-Admin here (click Private Message!) and she'll be happy to help you out.
HOW DOES THE GRADUATION SYSTEM WORK? WHEN WILL MY CHARACTER MOVE UP A GRADE?
You will automatically move on to the next year after every 500 posts. After Seventh Year, you become a Hogwarts Alumni.
0 posts First Year
500 posts Second Year
1000 posts Third Year
1500 posts Fourth Year
2000 posts Fifth Year
2500 posts Sixth Year
3000 posts Seventh Year
3500 posts Hogwarts Alumni
WOW. THAT'S A LOT OF POSTS. WON'T THAT TAKE FOREVER?
That's the point! It makes you really get to know, develop, and value your character. Even if you're still not convinced, time flies when you're having fun.
DOES THAT MEAN I HAVE TO CREATE A FIRST YEAR?
While it is usually encouraged, no, that's not the case. You can create any age and year of character you like.
SO, I KEEP SEEING THIS STUFF ABOUT QUIZZES AND NEWBIES. WHAT'S THE DEAL?
For awhile, quizzes were a required part of hsww characters. you had to take them to pass classes and move up years. However, quizzes no longer have to be taken for anything, so if you see something about them being required, disregard it. Same thing with newbies. Just ignore it. We're in the process of revamping the board at the moment.
HOW DO YOU GET A CANON CHARACTER?
If you haven't noticed, HSWW isn't a conventional site when it comes to canon characters. We don't allow canon battles, so if the canon is taken, you have to wait for the person to give up their character or go completely inactive before you can even ask.
Sometimes, if there's a period where many major canons are needed, we have an audition forum where you can compete for a canon. Chances are, if you join just to make a canon, you won't get it. We're a site that encourages originals just as much (if not more) than canons.
SOME INFO ABOUT THINGS ALLOWED AT THE SITE DOESN'T MATCH UP WITH THINGS I'VE SEEN IN OTHER TOPICS.
We're an old site (going since 2004), and sometimes old clutter doesn't get cleaned up the way it should. If you see things that don't match up, let an admin know politely and we'll make sure things are straightened up.
DO YOU GUYS ALLOW THREAD TEMPLATES?
Sure, go right on ahead. I can't guarantee the person you role-play with will use one back because, for the most part, hsww's pretty old school. Most of our members don't use fancy templates. Here we generally value content over appearance.
ARE THERE WORD COUNTS FOR POSTS?
Nope! Some of our members like to post wordier posts, while others don't. it mostly depends on who you're rping with. If you want a wordier reply, you might want to mention that in the bottom where you put your credits or denote an OOC section.
NO WORD COUNT?... EW.
No, not ew, sillies. just because we have no word count doesn't mean we can't role-play. There are many of us on here that can give whatever we get. However, if you are posting really short roleplays you will be warned, as we do want some quality to our roleplay!
DO I HAVE TO FILL OUT AN APPLICATION?
Well... yes and no. no-app role-plays are insanity, but our 'application' isn't a typical one. it's more of an in-depth profile and you don't have to provide a role-play sample.
YOU GUYS HAVE AN AWFUL LOT OF OLD THREADS AND ACCOUNTS...
Well, yes, because this rpg is many years old (not counting its time on msn), we've gathered some accounts and old threads. As of this moment we're undergoing a butt-kicking revamp to try and catch hsww up to more current sites, while archiving old topics and deleting inactive members. this, however, will take time and patience, because there are literally hundreds of them and very few admins.
WE AREN'T ALLOWED TO USE SMALL FONTS?!
Yep. Why? Because small fonts are difficult to read and hurt our already strained bad eyes. You don't wanna make us go blind do you?!
First off, it's NEVER okay to use bad language against another member at HSWW.
Though, it IS okay for your character to use bad language against another character.
At one time we only allowed those words that appeared in the Harry Potter books or movies.
Now? We don't see any reason to limit your vocabulary while you are IN character. In other words, characters can cuss all they like. You -the player- may NEVER insult another player (with or without cuss words). Though, feel free to use cuss words casually while out of character, as long as it's not an insult to ANYONE. Cuss Words In Harry Potter
-Aunt Marge makes a comparison between Harry's mom and a female dog, implying that Harry's mom was a bitch."It's one of the basic rules of breeding," she said. "You see it all the time with dogs. If there's something wrong with the bitch, there'll be something wrong with the pup--" (Prisoner of Azkaban, US Hardcover ed., page 25).
-Ron uses this word a lot. "Bloody hell. Whoever shed this must be 60 feet long, or more." (Chamber of Secrets -the film)
-Moody (Barty Crouch Jr) uses this word in a DADA lesson."Look at that, you lot ... Potter fought! He fought it, and he damn near beat it!" (Goblet of Fire, US Hardcover ed., page 232).
4. Eat Dung
-Used by Ron in reference to Draco Malfoy"Eat dung, Malfoy! said Ron, the same color as the dress robes as he snatched them back out of Malfoy's grip." (Goblet of Fire, US Hardcover ed., page 168.)
-Used by George in reference to Draco Malfoy"That little git," he said calmly. "He wasn't so cocky last night when the dementors were down at our end of the train." (Prisoner of Azkaban, US Hardcover ed., page 97.)
-Used by Fred in his farewell speech to Hogwarts"Give her hell from us, Peeves."(Order of the Phoenix, US Hardcover ed., page 675.)
7. Piss Off
-Used by Ron, directed at Harry."Piss Off!"(Goblet of Fire, the movie)
-Ron used this word in reference to Harry."Harry, you prat,' said Ron, "you didn't take that song thing seriously, did you?" (Goblet of Fire, US Hardcover ed., page 503).
-Used in a description of Aunt MargeShards of glass flew in every direction and Aunt Marge sputtered and blinked, her great ruddy face dripping. (Prisoner of Azkaban, US Hardcover ed., page 25.)
-Ron talks about Karkaroff's low score for Harry's performance on the first task. What? Ron bellowed furiously. "Four? You lousy, biased scumbag, you gave Krum ten!" (Goblet of Fire, US Hardcover ed., page 360.)
-Used by Hermione in reference to Umbridge."Lording it over all the other teachers, the stupid puffed-up, power-crazy old --". (Order of the Phoenix, US Hardcover ed., page 625).
I thought that this
PPP episode would fit rather well.
[/LIST]NO DRAMA POLICYKeep the Drama IC Only
From time to time, something will happen on HSWW that will make you angry, and the natural thing to do is to express that anger. We strongly suggest that you write everything down and keep it to yourself or share it with a close friend before making it public knowledge on HSWW.
Verbal attacks, useless complaints, threats of leaving, sarcastic remarks, unfounded accusations and similar rants are handled thus:Strike 1.
Your post will be deleted.Strike 2.
If you post it again, you will be suspended for three days.Strike 3.
If you come back, and keep on posting drama, it will be a permanent ban.
However, we all lose our temper from time to time. If we didn't forgive each other, we'd never get anywhere. Even those who are banned have been welcomed back. Everyone at HSWW has something fantastic to offer the site; if you're willing to share your talents whether it be your writing style or your technical abilities, you will always have a place at HSWW.
Remember - every member has a voice. If something happens and you don't like it - start a poll. The facts are that if the majority of HSWW is unhappy with a change, the admins will have to work hard until the majority is happy.
Thank you for your understanding.
