Back when I played here in 2006, I did notice one problem. Many people started miscellaneous threads with no real aim other than to fight. It was nearly impossible to advance the story, and that is how it is with most message board RPs.
However, I believe that by having GMs run "story" threads, that anyone within range in the game is welcome to join in on, with brief setting and happenings summaries in the first post, we could advance and even write our own epic story.
Aside from this, user-created free form RPs with the purpose of training in battle, or advancing character relationships [another thing the game has lacked for a long time] would be used for gaining experience or fleshing out your character. Many characters seem as if they were created simply to fight, but this is an RP...you are playing the role of a character that is otherwise assumed human in a world populated by other PCs. Interact and forge relationships, alliances, contracts, or whatever. These user-run aspects of the game are what really set it a part from others and give the game a unique feel.
After all, nobody out there will think up the same exact scenarios or reactions the same way you will.
