World History

The Distant Past
In the dawning days of the twenty first century, humanity was racked with an all consuming addiction to fossil fuels. This addiction, surpassed any drug, created before, or since, and came with perils of it‘s own. Over the course of this addiction, humanity would make many lapses in judgment during it’s attempts to obtain it’s fix. These transgressions, would frequently result in tragedy, both in terms of lives sacrificed, and environmental damage. Awakening to the costs of this addiction, humanity finally found the will the sever it’s ties to it’s destructive ways, and began a new future. And as time passed, as with all things, this addiction finally became nothing more than bad memory.

The Spaceward Advance
Freed from it’s addiction, humanity soon found itself engulfed in a new technological revolution that dwarfed all that had proceeded it. Turning its attention from the Earth, and to the stars, humanity soon found itself in a new apace race. Building massive colonies, to both support more human life in space, and to mine for resources beyond those found on our home world, for time all was well. Though a profitable venture, colonist soon found themselves desiring more, while those who had supported them were still owed a debt.

The Colony Wars
In time the trials that had met both sides soon escalated into conflict, and grew farther into the flames of war. Though no one had wanted to fight originally, the war soon became a nightmare of atrocities, and wanton destruction. In the end, colony turned against colony, and soon the Earth had gained a ring of orbital debris, made of both functioning colonies, and the remains of the destroyed. As time past however, reason over came hatred, and hope once again filled the Earth Sphere. Though many of the destroyed colonies were later repaired, or salvaged, many remains can still be seen clearly in the night sky.

The Red Planet
With the end of the hard ships of the Colony Wars, humanity once again found itself looking to advance it’s small foot hold in space. Turning its attention to the red planet, it was not long before the first settlements gave way to vast underground cities. While at first all seemed to be going well, as the first steps towards terraforming the planet began, the old nemesis of peace once again began to show.

The Martian Conflict
Once again, as with the Colony Wars, history repeated it self with the cries of freedom from debt while the Earth declared they must be repaid. While during the colony era, force was easier to apply due to close distances, during the Martian Conflict, attacks became heavy handed single thrusts. As each battle fought consumed waves of lives, and masses of resources it soon became clear to both sides, the final victory would come from resolve, and not power. Though it would take several years, in the end Mars would gain the upper hand by force the Earth to expend so much morale reaching it. Coming to terms, Mars claimed its freedom, while the Earth would try to go about recovering from another harsh lesson learned.

Ghosts of the Past
Though the war with Mars had finally come to a conclusion, in the time since humanity broke it’s dependency on fossil fuels, a new terror had waited to unveil itself. While at first it was barely noticed, the crust of the Earth had begun to weaken from the events of humanities past. Starting out as little more then large sink holes in isolated areas that had once been the sites of humanities old resource gathering sites, it soon began to become a more serious problem. Noting how these continued collapses could cause serious global problems, it soon became clear that action would need to be taken. As the world began the process of preventing further destruction, they learned they had acted too late.

The Great Collapse
On the morning of May 6th, 2291, all was peaceful, however, a problem nearly two centuries old began to stir on the seabed of the gulf of Mexico. Long neglected after their abandonment centuries before, the remains of deep sea oil wells began to fail. Though not the first of such events, the new flows of sea water created this day would cause the liquidation of the seafloor with horrific consequences. Within a matter of hours, the sea floor of the gulf of Mexico dropped but nearly one thousand feet, creating a tsunami wave reaching nearly two hundred feet in height. Racing outwards from the point of origin at a speed estimated at two hundred miles an hour, it was not long before the massive wave made landfall. As the swirling tempest made its way inland, destroying everything in its path, for a short time the isthmus of Panama completely disappeared. As with other tragedies of this scale from the past, a true death toll was never recorded, though estimates placed the number of persons effect in the hundreds of millions as much of the North American continent was inundated.

Dawn of Aquarius
As the world struggled to recover from the destruction wrought by the Great Collapse, the tides of humanity’s fate would begin to ebb, and flow once again. Recognizing many other areas subject to the same type of subversion as what had happened in the Great Collapse, the nations of the world united once again to a cause greater then themselves. Soon, the underwater barracks meant for the works who were to shore up the sea floor, soon gave way to massive aquatic cities. Before long, many had come to refer as this new outpost of humanity as Aquariums. Though the name was popularized by many at the times, those who lived, and worked in the aquatic cities took it as a slight towards their way of life. As other such treatment followed suit, including harsher demands on both working, and living conditions, resentment began to grow anew.

The Day of Revolt
Deciding they were tired of how things had become, several aquatic cities banded together under the name of Aquarius, in an attempt to rest some control from those on the mainland. In a fit of rage over yet another attempt to skirt their authority, the Global League decided the representatives from the so called Aquarius were inciting rebellion, and charged them with high treason. Though these charges were little more then a attempt to flex political muscle at the time, many aquatic city dwellers soon adopted the name Aquarians, in a blatant form of protest. While at first this seemed little more then an act of spite, this separation, even if only in name, soon bore a new resentment between the two sides. While at first, these conflicts were limited to verbal conflict, and sporadic violence, like the start of all wars, this soon changed. As the morning of September 17th, 2314 dawned, few new that the world would plunged back into war. Deciding the time had come to do something about the Aquarian leadership, the Global League initiated a botch raid with the intended goal of arresting all involved. However, to their dismay, they soon learned they had been lured into a trap, which then used their actions as a reason to declare war.

The Insurrection, and Revolution
Through the use of propaganda, and evidence of the failed attempt to capture the Aquarian’s leaders, it did not take long for the various Aquatic states to form a unified front against the mainland. Before long, conflict was rampant, and bloodshed the order of the day, as both the Aquarians, and Global League routed those who they saw as sympathetic to the other side from their ranks. Though these first actions were rather poorly thought out, it was not long before both sides had become harden to the horrors of war.

The Age of Aquarius

Seventeen months have passed since the war began. In that time, combat has become a bloody affair as both sides face off in massive machines of war. What horrors might still unfold in this conflict, is a question few know the answer to.

Though no one knows what will happen next, all sides agree, the end of this conflict is nowhere in sight.

The Decade of Decay

Corruption
As the war between Aquarius and the Global League continued both sides found that the tides of war was slowing. Battle forces crashed against each other and yet nothing ever seemed to make a difference. Even a covert operation launched by Aquarius to destroy the GL's primary manufactuering facility didn't accomplish anything. Despite the missions success the overwhelming numbers of the Global League didn't slow. However, what couldn't be dealt with up front was dealt with out of sight instead.

Deals between the two sides were secretly arranged. Swapping of information and secrets. Selling out information and plans. However what one side gained the other soon fought back against with their own information. Battles became bloody and horrid.

Slow Decay
The years dragged on and the war seemed no closer to finishing than when it had started. Neither side could gain an advantage and the chain of command began to break down. Generals and officers on both sides decided they would be better suited to lead and started to set up their own private militaries. They struck as they liked, fighting under the flag of their side without authority. Massacres and surprise attacks became common place and the general population began to hide in fear of what the war was becoming.

The End?
The year was 2327, thirteen years since the war had first begun and also the year when the war ended...almost. Both sides, now heavily fractured and in disarray, plotted their own schemes behind closed doors unaware of other events going on around then. In a show of force the vastness of space made its presence felt.

It was the side of the State of Rhode Island and travelling at some thousands of miles an hour. But as the blazing fire trail lit up the sky over the South Pacific the world could only watch. The meteor, luckily some might say, did not hit water. Instead it struck land, slamming into the continent of Australia. The shockwave from the impact causes fissues and cracks across the continent and much of the coastline sunk into the sea. However this was not the worst of it. The dust and debris flung into the atmosphere created a sufficating blanket of blackness that encircled most of the globe over the next few months.

With the light of the sun cut off over much of the Africa, South America and Asia the temperature dropped rapidly. Plants and animals died and the once inhabitable lands became a frozen wasteland. The rest of the world suffered massive climate shifts and eventually the two world powers decided that war was now pointless.

The Age of Renewal

For the past 20 years the world has been trying to pick itself up from the aftermath of the meteor impact. Much of the world is still blanketed in darkness and despite the truce between Aquarius and the Global League there is still tnesion and fighting all over the world. Some military personel did not like the cease fire and other simply decided to ignore it.

In response to this some of the people banded together. Veterans of the war from all sides, youngsters eager to defend their home, or simply those who wanted to put an end to the fighting. Over the years these small groups of individuals grew and soon flourished into a worldwide organisation, Aegis, a group with one purpose; to protect the people and finally bring an end to the fighting that had plagued the planet for decades.

How will you choose to act in this harsh new world? Your actions will decide the future.
