Title: Pappy Pax
Pappy - May 30, 2010 12:40 PM (GMT)
I have a couple completed. I'm going to test one and gave the other to Deacon to test.
The box holds 3 - D's which will provide 10x the life of the AA's that you put into the Tri-Square.
I installed the power connecter into the Tri-Square so it can be easily removed and the AA's can be used again.
The rear cord can feed mask fans and I have it wired through a pot w/switch for variable fan speed.
The power cord connectors are locking.
Both the radio and Pappy Pax fit nicely inside a couple Rap4 radio pouches. The larger is a MOLLE Radio pouch, and the smaller is a grenade pouch

Redwing and anyone else that uses a Grill, I found some 16mm fans that fit perfectly in the foam insert.
They are the 4 small fans shown. They mount into the insert with a single tie-rap.
The other two fans are the 25mm (1") like Monkey found.

I can build a Pappy Pax for anyone that would like one to use with their Tri-Square.
Parts for powering the radio only are about $25. The fan parts are $20 - $40 more depending on configuration.
I'm going to build a smaller 3 - AA battery box next.
This one will just have a mating connector for the fans and can be used when not using your Tri-Square.

HOLY CATS!!! Wowzers that looks darn good!
I'm in no rush, but I would definately like one of these. I would like my fans in the 16 mm size.
Redwing - May 31, 2010 03:18 AM (GMT)
Looks great!
I'm in as well. I'll check to make sure the 16mm fans will fit (I have a Profiler).
Pappy - May 31, 2010 12:27 PM (GMT)
It should be no problem having them ready for Global guys, maybe June practice. If your using a Bravo headset, you'll want it.
Anyone else?
Redwing - June 1, 2010 01:16 AM (GMT)
I saw the setup in person today, the pics don't do it justice!
Very nice work Pappy!

$25 for the base unit and $40 more for the 4 - 16mm fan setup.
Bluefish, I'll need your radio to install the connector and wiring. You can ship it to me or I can get it from you at practice on the 13th if your going to be there.
Bluefish - June 6, 2010 10:05 PM (GMT)
Pappy, I don't have one of the tri squares yet. Just wire the box up to accommodate the extra connectors. I'll bring my checkbook to practice on the 13th.
Redwing - June 8, 2010 12:15 AM (GMT)
So I owe $65?
When do you want the money?
Pappy - June 8, 2010 09:58 AM (GMT)
Parts will be here this week for Redwing, Bluefish and Dutch. $65 per unit, you can square up this weekend at practice. Deacon, your unit was $49.

Pappy,
Is it too late to for me to order a full unit with the 25mm fans? I can give you the money Sunday or mail it to you. How much?

Pappy, what size are those pouches?
Pappy - June 18, 2010 08:29 AM (GMT)
The Pappy Pax pouch is 8"x4.5"x2" and fits well. Pappy Pax is 6"x3"x2" plus knob and cord connectors.
http://www.milsimproducts.com/cart.php?tar...category_id=927The Tri-Square is in a M-203 grenade pouch. 5"x3"x2" and fits well also.

I have ten battery spacers made for the "D" cell packs, I'll have them at the next practice for those that want to add them.
Pappy- I also have your pouch snap replaced.
Pappy - July 1, 2010 09:37 AM (GMT)
Thanks Redwing.
Deacon - I've got your Bravo headset working. It wasn't one of those solder points this time even though they were pretty bad and I re-soldered them. It was one of those tension connectors in the jack itself that wasn't making contact when you inserted the plug from the headset. It appears to have lost it's "springyness" and wasn't protruding out into the jack. Maybe due to heating up to remove the cover for the first wire repair or something, I don't know. Anyway, I laid a little solder on it and it seems to work fine now.
Bluefish - July 4, 2010 12:32 AM (GMT)
pappy, when are you planning on cashing that check i gave you? it hasn't cleared yet, just making sure you haven't lost it...
Pappy - July 4, 2010 10:49 AM (GMT)
Sorry Bluefish, it's in the stack with the rest of the fella's. I'll deposit them tomorrow.
Bluefish - July 8, 2010 12:32 AM (GMT)
Could someone with the fan setup in grills snap a couple photos? I'm wondering if I should snip a couple ribs out of the foamie to let more airflow...
Btw, these fans are QUIET!
Pappy - July 8, 2010 09:52 AM (GMT)
I cut out a couple ribs from under each of my fans. Two ribs seemed to be a good fit. I also covered the remaining slots with athletic tape to direct the air flow through the fans. I covered all the slots on the bottom except for the outermost to help direct the inflow away from my nose & mouth.
It seemed to work well. I had no fogging at all during Global and it was a pretty sticky and humid weekend. Redwing had some fogging on Sunday when the humidity was at it's highest, so he was going to add the athletic tape.
Your right, the fans are very quiet. I actually have to look at them to see if they are running. Specs are 0.42cfm @ 3db each.
Be careful not to draw the tie-rap's to tight when you are installing. I have found that the rap's can deform the top of fan enough to inhibit rotation if they're drawn to tight.

Pappy - July 27, 2010 06:54 PM (GMT)
I talked to those two Neosmut fella's, Snipe and Phiber that staged with us, about the small fans we are using in our V-Force masks. They also had a teammate with a similar setup and referred me to a post on their forum.
http://www.neosmut.com/vb/tactical-gear/28...orce-masks.htmlhttp://www.x7og.net/masks/22700-diy-mask-fans.htmlI checked it out and found the fans spec out at 2x the flow of ours. 8x the noise (25db) which is comparable to the 25mm fan's noise levels that Deacon & Gargoyle are using. The fans are through flow like the 25mm fan's, so they can be reversed to flow into the mask also. That's the good news. The bad news is the fan's are about $20 each, where ours are about $8. The supplier from the post had them priced at $13, but is out of stock until September. I found them at Newark for $20 so I ordered one set to test.
One of my concerns with our fans was realized this weekend. I took a direct hit to the top of my mask and it took my fans out. One fan popped out of the tie rap and another's wires were broken. Because the $20 fans are through flow they should be able to be mounted on the inside of the venting rather than the top hopefully alleviating the problem of potentially being taken out with a shot to the top of the mask. 2x the flow is a plus too, along with having the ability to blow into the mask. Whether it's worth $80 in fans or not I don't know, we'll just have to see. I'll keep you posted.
Redwing - July 28, 2010 02:51 AM (GMT)
I lost a fan as well. :(
Also would be interested in something that flows 800 CFM or so... :P
It was so damn hot Saturday I think my eyeballs were fogging up... <_<

Yea, you could cut the air with a knife Saturday. Man, that was bad.
You can mail me your setup if you want and I'll repair and mail back.
Gargoyle - July 28, 2010 02:22 PM (GMT)
Just for the record, I have had no issues with fogging of the lens or my glasses since I rigged up my mask with the new 25mm fans before Global. They are on the outside of the vents blowing into the mask and I have not taped off any of the extra exposed vent area. However, I do have the extra goggle foam next to the strap cut away on both sides of the mask to help provide positive airflow through the goggle area then past the ears. The noise level is not an issue as it is barely noticeable to me and when I do pay attention to it, I can tell at what level the fan speed is running.
Pappy - July 28, 2010 11:26 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the feedback Gargoyle. I'm really glad they're working well for you.
We've still got some issues to work through with the small fans. I was fogging Saturday morning along with Redwing and I think Dutch too. Then as you read above, a paintball hit took mine out.
Your two fans put out 1.25cfm each to total 2.5cfm, which you have blowing in. Our four put out 0.4cfm each to total 1.6cfm, pulling air out though. I think the in/out thing is probably the factor here since your's were working well including Saturday morning.
Redwing - July 29, 2010 12:17 AM (GMT)
I'm considering buying a Shield, since the lenses are interchangeable with my Profiler but 25mm fans will fit.
I'll then ask pappy to re-do my cord with 25mm fans.
Pappy - July 29, 2010 12:22 PM (GMT)
Another spec worth noting is the 25mm fans have 28awg wire, the 16mm fans have 36awg. I know Dutch had wire issues just getting his installed, let alone getting hit by a paintball.
The $20 fans I've got coming in have 28awg also. Flow wise, four of these should put me at 3.6cfm blowing in or out.
Pappy - July 30, 2010 03:36 PM (GMT)
Got the new fans installed. I didn't have enough room on the inside of the venting so I had to stick with the outside. I used fishing line this time like the fellow from Neosmut rather than tie-raps, so they won't be popping out with a direct hit. I think I will also run with my visor installed to help protect the wiring, and the wiring is much larger on these fans. 28awg vs. 36awg.
I installed all four blowing into the mask and when I turned them on I immediately felt air flow across my eyeballs. I think my eyeballs were starting to dry out, at least I was conscious of my blinking. It's not humid today though. I have not cut any vent ribs or installed any tape yet, so I still have that in my back pocket if needed. The weather is supposed to be humid tonight & tomorrow morning (nothing like last weekend though) so maybe I'll go outside and run around with the mask on to see if I fog.
All in all, I think these will be an improvement over the other fans, if just for the reason I can blow into the mask with them. They should be though, at $20 a pop. If anyone would like a set, let me know and I'll order them up.

Dutch - July 30, 2010 08:07 PM (GMT)
Do you think 4 fans is necessary? Would 2 or even 3 fans get the job done?
Pappy - July 30, 2010 11:30 PM (GMT)
That's a good question Dutch. Short answer is, I don't know. The way to determine that I suppose, would be to start with two and if you had issues go to three, etc. The fellow on the Neosmut forum had two and from what I read, he didn't have any problems.
I wanted to skip that aspect of the testing and shoot for that 800cfm that Redwing was talking about. I'm an old fat guy that's a heavy breather (not that you are Redwing). If you want Dutch, I can make any configuration up for you, that you want to try.

Thanks Pappy. I just figured if 800CFM can feed a hot small block, it outta be enough to keep my lens clear...
I'm inclined to go with four fans myself.
Redwing - October 1, 2010 01:52 AM (GMT)
Pappy,
I'd like two of the new 16mm hi-flow fans. I'll bring my cordset and the $ (let me know how much) this weekend, if you're gonna be out at the field.
Also, I am going to try mounting them in a plate of some sort this time. The idea is I can remove/replace them easily to clean my mask.
Pappy - October 1, 2010 08:38 AM (GMT)
I'll get the fans ordered Redwing. Maybe the cheaper place has them in stock now. Don't worry about getting me your existing cordset, I've got spares.
I'll get the unit made up for you, then we can square up.
As for the removable plate, take a look at the Grill foam inserts. Easy to pop in & out for cleaning.

I considered this, but I would like to be able to hose off everything but the fans (and cordset).
Dutch - October 1, 2010 02:39 PM (GMT)
I would like a set of the bigger fans too. Maybe just 2? And can we make the wiring a little sturdier? I lost a connection at TWC.
Pappy - October 1, 2010 04:19 PM (GMT)
I'll order you a couple too Dutch and make another unit up. The wires on the hi-flo fans are quite a bit larger.
