There can't be many people whose horizons won't be broadened a little (or a lot) by watching this. It's a thoughtful look at one of the toughest grey areas in biology: people who are "intersex" or "transgender". When a foetus branches into male or female, there are 54 genes that affect the response to that chromosomal command. The baby may develop a female body with male chromosomes, or their brain may develop in one direction and their genitals in another. Hence the individuals we meet, from the American Midwest to India, who tell extraordinary tales of their search to find an identity. Their stories are life-affirming, and from them producer/director Antony Thomas (who made Death of a Princess) has fashioned a beguiling film that never feels exploitative. If all this doesn't sound like your cup of tea, surprise yourself and give it a go - you won't regret it.
