Hello,

A month or so ago, I began the start of the communityproject with a poll(link). The winner was RolePlayingGame and it's time to move on.

Because Neken is still working on the nIrium engine, and we can't compose music or create any graphics yet (and just cuz we'll need a design anyway) I figured it's a good idea to start with the story and other designical stuff. I'd like everyone to start writing a _VERY_ basic story. It shouldn't be complete or anything, because we can combine certain ideas and scrap some, and I hope in the end we will have sort of a basic story. It shouldn't be a story anyway, as long as you get some ideas down....After that we can combine them and start with the second draft.

-Stenny

P.S. In the meantime, I will try to create an empty design document and upload it somewhere.

Well, are we going to have characters like Final Fantasy 10? you know with tidus and wakka and auron, and his whole team....

or are we going to use just one main character?

I think thats quite a important thing first if you want to have the story done...

I would like the whole team thingie,
the one would be specialized in magical stuff, and the other in pure sword attacks, and the other is doing it all with his fists...

also the leveldesign should be spiritual, not just only some wooden forests, but like FF10...

my opinion is actually that we should get most of our inspiration from FF10, at least I just did.... biggrin.gif

EDIT:
About the story,....I don't think we should spend to much on it, cause its already hard enough to program it with people from all over the world wink.gif

it should be just like this, (mario) , the prinses is being kidnapped by the big evil idiot, and then mario has to save her... blink.gif

Hey hey, we're not going to remake final fantasy X okay? wink.gif

I must say the FF series are my most favorite games but some originality is always good. And I've never said we're going to do deep stories with details everywhere:

I've never played an RPG without a team though.

Oh, and thanks for the reply...You're the first in 3 days dry.gif

I think we should stick with specifying the gameplay first ... will the battle be turn-based ? dynamic ?

How does the leveling system works ? What are the stats ? How the player will move in the game ? Tile-based system ? Movement by squares (ff6-like) or free movement (zelda-like) ? Random battles or we see the monsters on the map ? etc. etc. etc.

the movement should be zelda like,
and I prefer to just show the monsters, it will give graphical just a little more detail...

I think it should be turn based...

about the characters.... I guess its going to be a team based one...
(by the way, stenny, you played games like : champions of norrath, at least i did...)

but anyway, the character design should be like this:
1. sword master
2. magic woman
3. fire guy
4. mechanical guy
(it should be a team of 4 people, that would be a nice number)

about walking through the levels....
My opinion is to do it lineair, that way players won't get bored by walking back, cause they forgot to open that stupid chest or something...

There also sprouted the following idea in my purple brain:
maybe we could use a grapical aspect from gta1, you know, in that 2d game, where they used 2 layers for sprites...
one for things like pipes and that, and the other the environment....

its good that this is finally getting started....

I have the feeling we all have a different meaning of an RPG (off course)...I'm fine with both, Zelda-wise of Final-Fantasy-wise...but I'll open another Poll.

@BGamed
Why a Fireguy, what's a fireguy in the first place? I like the idea of having a team with 4 people though, but I don't think that would work together with the real-timebased combatsystem (real-timebased = battling the monsters ingame and not on a seperate screen).

That is actually quite often used in games as The legend of Zelda. Walking back and forth between rooms and visiting each room a couple of times...

@Neken
The gameplay is good to start with too, I'll create a topic for that too. I don't think if it's that important to start a game on how the battle system will be worked out though.

Oh and just to let you know. Zelda actually uses a snap system too, but I think it snaps with 1/4 of it's tiles. This let's it look like it's free walking but makes sure you don't get stuck in environment...

@All
I'll create a poll about the type of RPG and then we'll see about the battlesystem

Okay, I think we just create a basic game (1 character, Walking around style like most MMORPG's or Elder scrolls, Just normal stats (STR, DEX, INT)) and then create a map maker for it and everyone create plug-in's. So one of the plugin's could be for a team of 4 people like BGamed mentioned. This means that the user gets to play on 100's of different maps with 100's of different plugins to change the game play how ever they choose. This is very orginal and it would allow each of us to make the game how we want.

Everyone works on the basic game though. Then we work on the map maker. Then sort out plugins.

Comments please.

- Cheers, Daniel

Daniels idea is quite good !!!

and after we made some maps, we should have a poll wich is the best...
but those things will come later, but we indeed should make a mapmaker, the public should be able to use it too...

I think we should do a cross of the FF battle system and a tatics battle system. IE: Random encounters occur, but instead of the characters on the right, the monster on the left, and the commands below, we should have it be a tatics battle field where you move you characters, attack, etc.

Maybe, but for a first game project ... it isn't a good idea.

Interpreting plug-ins takes awfully good c++ skills ...

yeah, we should make a basic game before we do some really advanced things.
I have played FFT, but I don't own it. I did make my own tatic's engine in GM.
