Yeah i think a homepage type function would do well...

News/articles in the middle..
Links on the left - link to forum, important/good/recommended sites etc

Perhaps set up an arcade games type thing on the site? i have seen other forums with this. Maybe have to pay to have a site eligible to have a arcade games function

i think that they are saying is that we have a homepage with polls , articles and stuff we could use wordpress , blogspot , freewebs , then have a homepage using one of these and redirect to that and then a link on the forum to the forum
