Do you like your Games simple, Complex, or a Little Bit of Both? Do you like to see the effort that was put into a game with each moment you play it, or are you more into sticking with the formula. -> If it isn't broke, don't fix it.
For me, I don't like when a series goes over 3 games. The games just have to offer something unique if they expect me to pay more money. Take Call of Duty, for example. 3 Call of Duties that were in WW2. Then the fourth one hit and it was completely different. It was a great quality game because it was new and obviously a lot of effort was put into taking a step out of the WW2 genre.
Devil May Cry 4, Those games have decent story (not too memorable), and they even tried to spice things up a bit with a new playable character. But that wasn't enough for me, its nearly the same as its always been. I would have been fine with a remake of an old one with new content and better graphics. Not an obvious attempt to make more money buy reselling the same thing with different packaging.
Metal Gear Solid 4. These games are linear yet they give you the very basic option of Sneak Around gameplay or Run and Gun gameplay. The story is excellent, covering a time frame from the technological revolution to a drastically tragic near-future. The gameplay has remained very much the same over the years. Crouch, crawl, roll, cover. Those are the basics. But even one change to that opens up new ways of playing the game. Slow/Fast Crouch Run, Slow/Fast Crawl, Reverse Crawl. New weapons simply enhance an already solid foundation of a game.
Final Fantasy. What can I say. There have been some ups, and some downs. Why? Because there are so freaking many, you run the risk of disappointing your fans. Stretching out time-lines to extend its life. Creating spin-off after spin-off. On one hand, this is good, because it enables new gamers to the series to get a feel of the gameplay and style. But instead of having, 12 Final Fantasys (Soon to be 13) and a handful of Chronicals and Chocobos, wouldn't it be better to just have all that time and energy spent developing cutting edge games like we know S/E can?

Let me teach you about final fantasy!
*There are FF tactics games soon FFTA2 is coming out (Yes)!
*As well as the one offs like XII for the DS using a Warcraft style engine.
*Crazy caravans and Chocobo Racing racing style game from FF.
*FF game spin offs like Criss Core.
*There the remakes like 1 and 2 for the PSP 3 and 4 for the DS
They have done everything like mario thats why they are so good!
I know about all their spin offs, but its funny that you mention Mario. Because nintendo has been training the minds of gamers and non gamers for years. Mario is almost a house hold name, as is zelda, and metroid (to a lesser extent). The best selling Wii games are first party (nintendo games) because everyone just assumes that a product with one of those names will be good.
Mario has branched out to different genres, but even those are starting to become stagnant. Like the new Mario Super Sluggers, basicly a remake of the GC version. Or the newest mario kart, which I didn't find fun at all. (But i did think the DS version was the best or tied with Double dash). Then there is super mario strikers, another remake, 8! mario parties -_-. They make games and make money, because they have created an icon that everyone knows and trusts and many consumers will blindly follow and consider infallible.
Final fantasy has branched out into different genres, but now even those are starting to fill up with more an more games. SE has created a franchise like nintendo has created mario, one that people will buy just because they know the name and trust it, almost regardless of whether or not its the same game with a different face. ^_^
hey all i know is if its worth playing i don't really mind how many games a series make. But i can see your point but if it really was that bad don't you think the series would've failed at 4th or 5th game even 6th to an extent?
Like the FF series (which i like) if people really didn't like it after so many makes there's no way a game would make their 12th, 13th + extras and still be successful.
Also it maybe that people like collecting series as a collection more than how good or not as good as the game should have been.
But like these games if you enjoyed earlier versions before then you most likely enjoy the later ones as well.
just an opinion :)
i like games that i can win and games i can use cheats for. :)
