Shape change

Lycanthropes can assume at least two forms - human and animal. Many can also assume a "hybrid" form that is bipedal with animal characteristics or even transform a small part of their body at will (for example, "growing" fingers into claws).

Changing between forms takes a great deal of energy; most lycanthropes must feed immediately after changing to animal form and collapse into a comatose state for several hours after returning to human form. Stronger lycanthropes do not need to feed immediately or collapse, but are extremely tired.

Lycanthropes who spend too much time in animal form may not be able to shift back completely. As a result, some lycanthropes have fangs or voices or eyes resembling their animal form, even when in human shape.

Other shapeshifters may have different forms available, and may experience different effects such as the following.


Contagion

Lycanthropes' bodily fluids are contagious, but only when the lycanthrope is in an animal or hybrid state. Lycanthropy can be also be passed along by getting a bad batch of lycanthrope vaccine.


Physical abilities

* All lycanthropes are extremely fast, strong, and resistant to damage. Lycanthropes' strength appears to depend somewhat on their actual size and somewhat on their level of supernatural power.

* Lycanthropes can recover from almost any wound other than that caused by silver weapons.

* Lycanthropes have extremely acute senses, even in human form.

* Lycanthropes are effectively allergic to silver and feel physical pain from even skin contact, although some seem to enjoy silver jewelry.

* Some lycanthropes are better at hiding what they are than others. Typically this is the stronger members.

* If they lose a limb, it will grow back with the next animal shift as long as the wound remains fresh.

* They cannot get infections, though blood loss can be an issue. All wounds will eventually heal. They will stop balding after being turned.

* If the lycanthrope is new or young, or it is too close to the full moon, the scent of fresh blood can cause them to shift to their animal form.


Command of animals

Lycanthropes appear able to command animals of their species.


Reaction to vampire's call

Lycanthropes can be "called" and commanded by a vampire with the ability to call their species of animal. Sufficiently powerful lycanthropes can resist a vampire's call, or even interfere with the call, preventing the vampire from calling other lycanthropes or animals.
Similarly, sufficiently powerful shapeshifters, such as Richard, are able to look vampires in the eyes without being affected by their mental powers.


Alpha Weres

Some shapeshifters reach "alpha" or "master" status, a power level similar to that of a master vampire. Alpha shapeshifters may display some of the following traits:

* An ability to resist transforming.

* The ability to partially shapeshift, for example shifting hands into claws, or even "cosmetic" shapeshifting - shifting bones or flesh simply to alter appearance.

* The ability to force other shapeshifters to change form, or to prevent them from doing so.

* Some shapeshifters can share their power with others by allowing them to feed on the shapeshifter's blood.

* The ability to heal others, by a variety of means.

* If they are strong enough, can shield the weaker members from a vampire's call, as well as their animal counterparts.


Reproduction

Most female lycanthropes cannot carry a pregnancy to term however the physical changes are too violent. There are some exceptions, some forms lycanthropy which are not tied to the moon, and thus are able to avoid changing to animal form during pregnancy, also, some snake lycanthropes can lay eggs.

Male lycanthropes can father children; it is not uncommon for lycanthropes, especially those not high in their group, to have a wife and children who are not lycanthropes. Mowgli Syndrome is very rare. The defects are not specified, but are described as "severe". In addition, the fetus can develop at the speed for the animal, instead of a human, and can speed up rapidly at any time.

To avoid reproductive issues, some lycanthropes choose to be sterilized, but their increased healing abilities can reverse the sterilization. Doctors have begun using silver clips to prevent reversal, this also has problems, as the silver clips can cause silver poisoning.

Werewolf Rankings

Ulfric: Wolf King: Generally an alpha male, but occasionally an alpha female, Ulfric is the highest rank in a pack. Challenges for this position are always to the death. Normally the loser is consumed by the winning and newly proclaimed King, along with his/her packmates.

Freki: The Ulfric's second in command, and second in line for the throne.

Geri: The Ulfric's third in command, and third in line for the throne.

Lupa: The mate of the Ulfric. This rank cannot be challenged for; it may only be decided by the Ulfric.

Freyja: A werewolf who has begun to contest for the right to lead the pack; traditionally, the Freyja will call the pack leader out to fight to the death. A wolf must reach the second in command status before they can issue the challenge for leadership.

Fenrir: A pack's second who has announced his intent to challenge the current Ulfric for leadership of the pack.

Bolverke: The person in a pack (wolf) who meets out punishments that the Ulfric does not feel comfortable giving. Translation: 'doer of evil deeds'.

Skolle: The Ulfric's bodyguard and enforcer.

Hati: The Ulfric's other bodyguard and enforcer.

Vargamor: An old-fashioned position, the vargamor is a human witch or psychic. Almost always female, she is neutral in all fights. Many packs no longer have one.

Eros/Eranthe: The persons in a pack (wolf) designated or entrusted with the teaching newly infected wolves how to control their strength and beasts during sexual intercourse.
