Development Diary: Techymon
If you had shown up for massing at the TFK war, you would of probably heard me talking about Techymon. Although I'm not sure just how exactly I came up with this idea, I think it will be worth exploring.
So Techymon is going to be a forum-based Runescape Card game, designed and managed by me. In the coming weeks, a new board will probably pop up in the Spam and Forum Games topic, where I will launch Techymon and you will be able to duel. Currently, I am busily working on the game cards, rules, board, and more, so that soon you will be able to "buy" a starter deck and later, booster packs. Hopefully this will turn out to be a successfull game.
Right now (as of writing), I have created about half a decks worth of cards. Now, what do they look like? They look kinda like this:
Hawt, right? Right there, you are looking at a monster card. I'll go over each part of the card, from top to bottom.
Name: At the top you will see the name of the card. Pretty simple, right?
Stars: The stars on the card represent the level of the card. The more stars the card has, the more powerful it is. Higher leveled cards will also take longer to play (will be explained later).
Picture: In the center of the card is a picture matching whatever the card is. In this demo card, you can see I added a picture of myself in Guthan's, and added a nice background. Right now I have gathered about 10 different backgrounds to match different themes.
Orbs/Circles: The colored orbs next to the picture show the stats of that monster card.
The way this stats work is kinda like Yu-Gi-Oh, but with some twists. More is explained further down in the Rules and Gameplay section.
Description: This small box contains the card's description or effect, and the race of the card. In this particular card, it is a Warrior race, and has a healing effect. You will often see on effect cards that the effect will relate to what the card represents in game. For example, the Super Strength Potion card will increase a monster's strength for a limited time.
Rules and Gameplay
The minor rules and such haven't been finished, but I will share the basic concept of this game.
Steps of the Duel: There are a few steps during each turn.
1. Starting Phase: The player whose turn it is "draws" a card from the top of their deck.
2. Summoning Phase: You can summon a monster (1 normal summon per turn) to the field.
3. Equipment Phase: If you have any equipment cards (potions, armor, weapons), you can attach them to a monster.
4. Attack Phase: Each monster on your side of the field can attack one at a time, and once per turn (more or less if an effect is active)
5. Damage Phase: During this phase, 2 monsters can go into a "battle." For example, let's take these 2 cards.
In this example, lets say Armoured Zombie attacks TzHaar-Ket.
If the attacking monster's attack (60) is equal to or greater than the opponents defense (60), then the opponent takes damage. The amount of damage is the attacking monsters strength level (40 in this case). That is then subtracted from the defending monster's hp. Once a monster's HP equals 0, that monster is destoryed. In this scenario, TzHaar-Ket will have 15 HP left after being attacked by Armoured Zombie.
6. End Phase: The next player starts his turn (starting phase again).
Destroyed cards are sent to the graveyard, and can't be returned to play unless by a card's effect.
Also, based on which turn it is (how many complete cycles of phases have gone by; so that each player each has had a turn), you can summon higher leveled monsters. At turn 1, you can only summon cards with 2 or fewer stars. Turn 2 is 4- stars, turn 3 is 6- stars, and so on. Basically double the stars per turn. On turn 5, you can summon any card (since a card can only go up to 10 stars)
Winning and Losing
There are 3 ways of winning a duel:
1. You successfully defeat 10 of your opponents monsters in the duel.
2. Your opponent runs out of cards in their deck
3. Your opponent forfeights the duel
That's pretty much the jist of Techymon. I look forward to launching this game in the coming weeks. Look for more details later!
