Title: The Runescape Paradox
Golden arm42 - December 30, 2008 02:09 PM (GMT)
The time has come for me to go inactive from Ancient Legion. Note: I'll still be active until the end of holiday break, January 4.
When I first co-founded Ancient Legion with my brother, Lamb Bug, in April, I was playing Runescape on a very limited basis. I was doing great in school, was playing baseball 4-5 days a week, and was having fun with friends. In short, I had a real life. Now, in the last few months, particularly since the beginning of the school year in September, Iíve slowly come to the conclusion that Iím addicted to Runescape and without immediate action, my real life will be irreparably damaged.
For those of you who havenít led a successful clan, itís hard to understand exactly how much work goes into its maintenance. Thereís foreign relations (wars, alliances with other clans of course, but also small things to improve relations, like registering and posting on other clansí forums), domestic issues (scheduling events, making interesting topics for members to enjoy, breaking up/smoothing out occasional issues between clanmembers), administrative work (updating calendars, approving validating accounts, maintain forums, fix bugs, promote people), and recruitment (making and bumping recruitment topics on several fansites, trying to get members who post looking for a clan to join AL). All in all, thereís a serious amount of work to be done, and although Iím extremely grateful for the help of Lamb and our staff (council, senior members/mods, event coordinators, warlords), I spend easily an hour per day during weekdays and more on weekends doing stuff to improve the clan. This doesnít include the time in which I spend playing Runescape, which Iím afraid to say is more than it should be, and although I donít spend hours and hours per day playing like some people, Runescape itself also takes a considerable time commitment, especially when Iím trying to level in order to keep up with fellow clanmates and do my part in wars.
Now, you may ask: ok, thatís great Golden, but why does it matter? Well, over the last few months, Iíve come to the conclusion that although I very much enjoy the time I spend with the clan, the time I spend clanning and playing Runescape is really hurting my real life.
First, and by far the most important, is the time commitment. As I said earlier and Iíd like to say again: I donít at all consider my time in AL to be ďwasted.Ē However, as Iíve always said, real life needs to come before Runescape, and with two extra hours in my day gone, my real life is beginning to suffer. Although Iím still getting good grades and doing well in school, the simple fact is that Iím behind schedule in physics, math, and English, so I need to devote more time to those just to catch up. In addition, my busiest time of the year is coming up: Iíve got end-of-semester history papers to write, a science fair project to conduct (and note: Iíve won the county science fair two years in a row and Iíve got a streak to keep up :P), a paper for a statewide writing contest to write (finished third in the state last year, gonna win it all this year), AP Government exam to study for (made virtually no progress on so far). I'd also like to take three new classes this spring, electrical engineering, filmmaking, and Italian, that will need time as well. I decided to leave baseball, which I had played and loved for more than a decade of my life, to devote more time to schoolwork and volunteer work and not to pixels: Iíve got work that needs to be done and however fun the clan and Runescape may be I canít keep my activity up.
The time aspect is one thing, but unfortunately, thereís another aspect that Iím concerned about, and thatís a seeming addiction to Runescape. As grotesque as it may seem, Lamb and I, brothers who are very close, talk about almost nothing but Runescape and the clan all day long. Itís gotten to the point that our dad, as a Christmas present to my mom, gave her a ďcertificateĒ entitling her to one dinner without me and Lamb talking about Runescape. Pretty sad, isnít it? I think that Iím addicted to the game, and thereís only one way to break an addiction: stamp it out entirely. Thatís why I must leave this clan and Runescape.
Now, you may be wondering (if you havenít fallen asleep three paragraphs ago :P) why I canít just go as active as I can and continue to stay as I can and in Runescape. The simple answer is that I don't have the required self-discipline. I've attempted to do this in the past, but I always (and hate myself for doing it) sneak onto the computer. That's why I'm going to utterly destroy my chances for coming back, at least until the summer. At the end of Christmas break (January 3 or 4), Iím going to have Lamb suspend my forum account until the summer. He'll change his password so I canít log in on the forums. I'll also going to instruct him to change my password and PIN on Runescape so I canít log in either. All addictions, whether they be nicotine, heroin, or Runescape, are hard to give up. Thatís why I've got to take these hardline measures. If there's a really big war that I'm needed for and I don't have too much going on, I'll be there with you to fight with my fellow clanmembers. :)
If all goes well and Lamb hasn't "accidentallyĒ :D forgotten my Runescape password, I'll most likely be back on in the summer. I'll sure there will be new faces in the clan, but I bet that I'll recognize people from my old time in the clan as well. I swear to you right here and now that I will never NEVER join or found another clan: if I have time to come back to the clan world Ancient Legion will be my clan. If I've gotten stuff under control earlier than the summer and I suddenly find myself using my time much more efficiently, allowing time for RS, then I'll be back. :D
With that, I say goodbye to Ancient Legion. My time in Ancient Legion has made me laugh (some of the forum games on our forums, Lambís hidden rickroll videos), cry (certain people leaving), furious (Aliath and Orichocos posting fun war victory topics), and thrilled (Lamb and I running through the house and doing a high-five after killing the last person in a war). Iím not mad, disappointed, or bitter with any members or staff of AL, and Iíd like to truly thank you for making my time in the clan such an enjoyable experience. Please, please donít leave (do I flatter myself? :o) just because Iím no longer in the clan. I hand over whatever power and responsibility I had in the clan to Lamb Bug, which with he may do as he wishes. I remain proud to be a member in Ancient Legion for so long. With luck, Iíll be back to you guys in the summer, but for now, wish me luck in real life.

Wow, I knew this would come, but never thought it would come so soon. Yes, I am dissapointed with your departure from us, but this is just a test to see if we can make the clan that much stronger so you can be proud of us if and when you make your return. For those who have been here for quite some time, we shall do well in maintaining the clan and improving it.
I understand fully about your studies for I myself have had that problem as well, but I was playing a different game (Pokemon lol ). School is easier for some, and much harder for others, and I'm sure you'll do a great job in maintaining and increasing your knowledge in all areas that you put your mind to. We need to face something, Runescape has no future for us, except for a lot of gameplay and hours and hours upon end of no lifing. School and jobs are what get us moving thoughout our life and world, because those are material and prove benefitial.
In my first moments of joining Ancient Legion, you and Lamb have helped me out so much with my questions about Runescape and clanning. I enjoy those moments still, though brief, as without them, I wouldn't of had the knowledge and wits to be in my position today. Golden, you have been a great influence to all of us here (I hope) and I do hope you have a great time outside of Runescape. YOU WILL BE MISSED. :(
squeeki - December 31, 2008 04:05 AM (GMT)
So Goldy are you leaving or just taking a break like meh? If you are leaving that suck if you are taking a break I will see you when you come back. Have fun in real life buddy. :)
Speedslayer2 - December 31, 2008 09:02 AM (GMT)
Golden, even though I had not known you for a long time.. Or even hardly spoke to you.. I am sad that you are leaving.. Real life comes first in many aspects and all I can say is good luck to you in real life and this clan will not fail because golden is gone. I'm sure Lamb will do a great job! :D
Earthgod7 - December 31, 2008 01:33 PM (GMT)
see yea golden I hope you come back I mean just on and off.
red ring 95 - December 31, 2008 03:13 PM (GMT)
hey dude. great job realizing you have a problem, and are acting on it.
i know everyone will want you back, but i have to say, you will love the stress relief after a few days, not worrying about upcoming wars, recruitment topics, members, ect. just the freedom of not having to deal with any of that is just great.
so, enjoy you break thoroughly, but dont forget about everyone here on the boards!
(be like me)

I never know what to say on those occasions, so I'll keep it simple
Good luck in real life. I know how school can be hard. Trust me: I've known that for a whole lost year (too long to explaing).
See you around l8r!
Golden arm42 - January 1, 2009 02:03 PM (GMT)

Good Luck IRL and hope teh next few months are good 4 ya.. But when you do come back, you should make it so tht you only go on rs and forums like twice a week or something so tht you can carry on wit ya baseball( or watever it called and if u rejion), do homework etc AND play rs without a problem. Thats just a suggestion
But , again, GL IRL :D
Wolfclaw104 - January 4, 2009 03:15 PM (GMT)
I can understand you Golden because rs can become an addiction and I respect you for doing something about it :)
I hope you have a wonderful time in real life :D

As with the majority of my clanmates who posted before me, i commend you in your decision to sacrifice runescape for your real life committments. It is a hard thing to do as i have tried and failed in the past. I am sure however, that you have the discipline to pull this off and i wish you the best of luck! i know that whilst not everyone in AL may entirely support your decision, we all appreciate the work you have put into this clan and the helpful, kind attitude you have shown towards every member of this clan! So goodluck with your schoolwork and i hope to see you back here as soon as conveniently possible! :D
