Beneath the ice-locked, crater-ridden, geyser-rich surface of the moon Grannos, strange subterranean rivers of liquid water networked the planet. They geyesers on the southern hemisphere kept waters heated at great temperatures, and from this came the flow of water across the whole of the planet, in tubes that were like one vast river system. In these tubes of water not too far above freezing came the first forms of life known to Grannos. The first to appear was the Chemioalgae, which wasn't truely algae, but clusters of bacteria that became multicellular networks of chemiosynthetic beds. These began to populate the tubes with the remnants that became detatched, followed the flows and reattatched elsewhere. These free-floating bacterial growths encouraged filter-feeders, like the Feather-Crawler and the Anchor Worm. These creatures kept their bodies relatively inactive to conserve heat, and used mechanisms like feathery growths or porous skin to absorb single-celled prey that floated by. The last of the first four organisms to emerge was the Sedementor, which took minerals and single celled organisms out of the water and built out a dense shell around its soft, absorbant body. A series of small holes on the top of the rocky build-up kept water flowing in until the Sedementor inside died, leaving a solid shell to be worn away by currents into smoothed over rocks. The majority of life kept to the southern half of the moon, nearest to the warm water that sustained life more easily than the frigid waters in the north. However, the far south was unpopulated, due to the nearly boiling waters beneath the geysers. While these boiling waters composed a subterannean sea, contained by a solid rocky core and walls of ice kept frozen by space, its sheer heat kept it inpopulable.

Description: Anchored into the walls of ice with its spiked tail, the Anchor Worm uses a porous skin to extract nutrients. Its body is the most susceptible to cold of all extant creatures currently, but is concentrated nearest the geysers in the south.

Description: At first, the Sedementor seems to be a rock with a porous top. Further investigation reveals a simple, slug-like creature living inside the rock, continually excreting indigestible sediments into its outer shell, which bulges out from its body in all directions but up. The top is a porous, thin shell, through which water easily flows.

--Notes:

First of all, I hope you guys will give this game a fair chance at working. It's an experiment quite like Anabasis, though with obvious differences. If this is popular, I will also put up a few more moons. The moons will not be divided into periods, so just era after era after era, though that means that disasters happen as often (or infrequently) as I choose. Have fun playing!

Description: The Buzzsaw Sedimentor was an offshoot of its preceding Sedimentor that developed a unique ability to keep its sediment shell from breaking down if it got caught in the currents: It developed a sort of paste that it exuded from its soft insides, that bound and hardened the sediment around it, keeping it attached to them even when the currents got strong enough to try and rip the sediment away from them. This also allowed them to develop a kind of ridge that spiraled and sliced along its sediment covering, that was sharpened to allow it to either stick into one of the ice walls if it hit it hard enough, to become a stationary filtration feeder, or to cut through the tentacles of the developing Ice Hydra, if it tried to ensnare it.

These little puffballs circulate through the tunnels on warmer water, which rises and repeats itself in little loops. Less fortunate chemiopuffs may stumble on another current which drives them into the colder, less hospital regions of the tunnels where they soon meet a quick, icy death.

Description: A common source of death for most organisms on Grannos was getting sucked into the hot waters of the geysers and getting shot into space. While no creature could muster up the heat resistance to survive getting it's tissues heated to 212+ degrees Fahrenheit, it is fairly well known that rocks can. Because the sediment shell of the cannonshot would almost always shatter upon hitting the ground, the creature could enter and leave a geyser with only mild concussive damage. In order for the rock shell to be completely effective inside the geyser, it completely surrounds the cannonshot once fully grown, because of this, the cannonshot can only feed for a short while after re-entry. Thus, the cannonshot is actually dependent upon getting shot out of a geyser in order to feed. This suicidal nature has made it crucial to breed as often as possible.


OK, the second one could never evolve (mostly because they'd all be dead), but please oh sage of dragons, please let it survive for the pure awesome that is living rocks being shot into space! Perhaps just make them constantly endangered?

Don't sweat it. If a creature is fun enough, we can ignore some parts of science for a bit and just have a good time. smile.gif Science is all well and good, but a game's purpose is to entertain, and living rocks are indeed entertaining.

It's not that implausible. Rock-like organisms grow a shell thick enough allowing them to tolerate extreme temperatures. When they inevitably get sucked into a geyser, they find that they can survive and get a better source of food, so they replicate and therefore become a new species. Wallah!

Description: On Grannos, as everywhere, the flow of water was god. The tidal force of the gas giant, the water ejected by the geysers, the fresh melt, and gravity: these where the things that dictated life and death. It was the currents that allowed filter feeding to be a viable method of existence in the first place, but the anchor worm had ignorantly fought and resisted the currents since it's genesis. The Repeller Worm was different, It knew that the tides of the underground rivers took time to undo each other, and that the microscopic organisms upon which it fed could get trapped in dense pockets in some places and quickly swept away in others. For a simple stationary creature, these feasts and famines canceled each other out in all but the most extreme cases, but for a creature with the ability to feel the currents of the waters of Grannos and use that data to develop a simple sense of whether or not the current conditions are good for filter feeding, and the capability to actually abandon it's anchor for a short time and ride the currents, then flail around for a bit and re-anchor it's self, this fact of life could be exploited.

Named because I imagine it's method of travel as being somewhat similar to that of someone going down a cliff by rappelling, letting a force of nature do the moving for them in small bursts while always returning to a safe, stationary position before that force of nature can do anything horrible to them.

I'm assuming that a basic nervous system means that you can feel stuff (kinetic force detection and temperature detection) along with do very simple things with that info, like avoid above average heat, and move away from things that cause above average amounts of localized kinetic force, provided of course that you have the physical ability to complete such actions.
