As the world continued to form, the main continent began developing a rift right down the middle. The volcanic islands began forming, as well as the deep ocean expanding due to developing ocean trenches. The offshore tropical area was becoming encircled by developing islands, and the world as a whole was still hot from the energy of creation. This period would become known as the Premordial Period, when all life would have its beginnings. In the first phase of life, new species blossomed forth, species emerging like water pouring from a pitcher.

Among the new species was the Raspura, a branch of the Algae Gut family that preyed on its ancestors. The Algae Guts themselves continued to proliferate among the algae-dominated regions of the sea, joined in their endless grazing by the Algae Worm, an herbivorous version of the declining Mouth Worm. The Algae Gut and Worm were finding their clusters of Verdant Algae were becoming small, budding colonies of Aquaweed. Among the Aquaweed growths were the unchanged Branch Stalks and shelled species. The Shell Feeder and its more evolved counterpart, the Shell Cruncher along with their unrelated but analogous species the Barbed Shell, spread to all the world's shallow seas. In the depths, the Dull Algae remained the only species that could tolerate the increasted depths. As the shores openned up to creatures, the Shore Fan developed as a surface-breaking version of its aquatic cousin, the Shallow Fan. However, the Shore Fan was not terrestrial, as its anchor remained under water due to a lack of rooting structures. It was then concidered amphibious. The real development of this era was the rampant spread of fungus of all variety. Coming in various forms (Desert Root, Bulbed Desert Cap, Aqua Root, Shore Root, Bulbed Aqua Cap, Bulbed Cap), they were essentially analogous forms of the same fungi, a more advanced Gnarl Root, which was replaced by its ancestors. In the desert climate, the Desert Worm lived among the roots of these fungi to filter the nutrient rich soil. These forms spread across almost all the large continent and the beach, as well as the shallows. A distinct divide became apparent between the Aquaweed beds and the Fungal Seabeds, dividing the tropics into two areas. The Cylinder Sponges flourished among the fungi, filtering their spores and extracting the rich nutrients. Another creature to flourish by filtering the spores among the fungal beds was the Swimming Worm, a larger and more sturdy Mouth Worm. In the disjoined tropical plains, the Capture Tube was the most successful organism, feasting on the floating growths of Cluster Algae.

Description: Raspuras are a carnivorous offshoot of the Algae Gut, evolving to fill the niche as one of the planet's first predators. Raspuras, though constantly hungry, are little threat to healthy algae guts. They move along the sea floor using their one fleshy foot until they happen upon an unhealthy, dead, or dying algae gut. They fall upon the gelatinous mass with what can only be described as slow-motion ferocity, scraping away at the flesh with their tooth-plate and a toothed, rasping, radula. One algae gut will feed a raspura for a month or more, their primitive metabolisms taking days to digest.

The Swimming worm is also starting to grow a backbone, it did this because it makes the worm harder to be prayed upon, also it lets the Worm propel itself slightly faster through the water.

Description: The Barbed Shell doesn't do much of anything but lie among the sea floor. It can exist in pretty much any place, though it is more prevalent in the Depths and in the Shallow Plains than anywhere else. This nasty little creature is covered in a hard shell, using its wickedly barbed spines to give anything that seeks to make it into a meal a nasty little surprise as it rips open its mouth and soft throat with its spines. This shell only covers its top, however, and on its bottom is soft flesh, meaning that if it's flipped over to reveal its filtration system and soft underbelly, it's doomed. It feeds through simple filtration, harmlessly pulling in various things around it, and making sure that it is undisturbed by various predators thanks to the spines. When the time comes to reproduce, it does so by a small, asexual process that causes a small bulb to form off of its soft flesh. This bulb grows slowly, into a smaller form of the Barbed Shell, without its hard and spiked shell. This develops later on in its life, as the shell detaches to float away from its parent, using the currents to spread it throughout the seas. Upon its growth and increase in size, weight, etc. thanks to the development of its shell, it will sink gradually down to the ocean floor, and a new life begins.

Description: The Desert Worm is just that. A worm. It squirms through the ground, digging through the soil using the long mouth tube that connects its head to its rear in its long, extended form. This tube filters the soil that passes through it, and feeds the creature by cleansing the soil of any debris, flesh, etc. that passes through it. Thanks to its presence, as well, the soil that it passes through becomes more nutrient-rich, and capable of supporting life. In order to reproduce, the worm uses an asexual process called budding, where a smaller worm grows from the main parent, to detach and start its life anew, in the shelter of the underground.

Description: The Numbing Shell is a powerful offspring of the Barbed Shell, which had found that the creatures of the sea were more capable of killing them than they had originally anticipated. So, some of the newer offspring began to develop a more potent defense over time, hardening their half-shells that safeguarded their lives, and adding a different, more hollow kind of spine. This spine would inject a mild nerve toxin wherever they happened to be bitten, and as such would force the creature to A) Let go of them, as it would numb their mouth and make biting rather hard. cool.gif Continue eating and simply hope they could survive the meal or C) Die thanks to the toxin overloading their systems.

Time will tell how effective this was.

Description: Some of the Barbed Shells, however, developed a new way of getting a meal, and protect themselves from predators. Some of them found the defenses they had already adequate, but their filtration systems just weren't enough to keep them alive due to a relative lack of food in their areas. So, they began to develop a hunting instinct, developing a basic mouth on their soft undersides, as well as a basic kind of foot to drag them along on the ground. It now became common to see these little critters dragging themselves along the plains, or even hovering at the edges of cliffs.

Any creature that was on the ocean floor would find a little shell suddenly on top of them, before being devoured, using a sticky fluid that was on the foot of the creature to stick to the creature they were eating, eventually eating it alive. Thanks to its shell, no matter where the creature ran to, it would have enough wait to potentially affect its balance, while still saving itself from predators that tried to eat their meal. Try eating a fish that has a spiked ball on one side of it, after all.

Description: The Terra Worm was formed from a small offshoot of the Desert Worm, focusing more on their soil filtration ability than any side way of gaining nutrition. Indeed, the soil that they passed through, thanks to increased filtration ability, became richer, darker, firmer. Slowly, the Terra Worm, true to their name, was terraforming the planet, turning rocky, inhospitable sand, to rich, life-sustaining soil. They also developed water-retaining skin, so as to leave the safety of the fungal colonies, which absorb water, to spread their enrichment elsewhere, as well as lessen the competiton for food.

Description: The Harvester is just that. A Harvester. Thanks to the spread of the fungus that has choked off the land, the Harvester found a new food source. Worms began to develop severing teeth at the front of their mouths, and as they burrowed began to chew through the roots that the fungus laid down to anchor itself, swallowing it into itself. Thanks to its new diet, a plant digestion system developed inside it, it was able to break down the fungus, and eject what nutrients it didn't absorb behind it into the soil.

It also began to develop more water-retaining skin, allowing it to remove the fungus that kept its predecessors dry, and still manage to keep from killing itself. The Terra Worm too, thanks to the soil enrichment, would undoubtedly aid in keeping the worms moist as they dug through richer, more absorbent soil.

Description: Very much like it's cousins, the shallow and shore fans, the steam fan relies on its peculiar feathery growths to feed itself. Like the shore fan, it absorbs spores that travel in the air and breaks them down into nutrients for its primary means of sustenance. However, the steam fan has no root unlike its cousins and is subject to both the wind and the steam from the volcanic islands it's normal habitat is within.

As it has little control once airborne, many of these steam fans occasionally end up being carried away to the open ocean where they float until a wave ends their short lives. Others would be carried to the volcanoes themselves where its steam and heat carried them to new heights before it overcame their minuscule amount of heat resistance and scorched them alive.

Still these surprisingly hardy species of fan live on as new generations come about relatively quickly and they enjoy an environment with no competitors.

Description: There was a third species of Shell, called the Rainbow Shell, that sprouted from its original Barbed Shell. These were strange creatures, that developed a bright, rainbow coloring that made it stand out to those that could see. No one quite knows WHY they developed this trait, but no other creature developed sight as of yet, so it seemed that they weren't to affected by this dazzling color.

The Rainbow Shell was unique in the fact that its spines, while others had been hard coated into the shell, were not actually attached to the shell. They were able to be detached when a predator latched onto the shell, allowing it to fall free, and possibly get away safely. This meant that the predator in question was merely left with a mouthful of rather smarting spines, barbed so as to be difficult to remove, and the shell was left none the worse for the wear, not having to worry about being eaten. Over time as well, the spines would regenerate, guaranteeing that it was not left unguarded for long. Merely a nasty present to those that attempted to eat it.

In addition, it has improved its ability to photosynthesize, to take advantage of its new proximity to the sun, and has elongated its holdfast, allowing it to better anchor itself against the currents, even in loose soil.

Description: A more versatile, more reproductive, and all around more efficient evolution of the Algae Worm, the Fungus Worm retrieves most of its nourishment from the now plentiful fungi scattering the ocean shallows, but will revert to its algae feeding habits should it become necessary. Both of its food sources are located via a basic sense of smell, and it most often travels in swarms which can occasionally increase exponentially in numbers when sufficient feeding grounds have been located, albeit after an extended digestion period.

Description: Some of the Swimming Worms, thanks to their newfound mobility, developed a stronger hunting instinct than their brethren. Over time they lost their filter feeding ways, and instead developed a basic system to devour flesh, developing a powerful circle of a hard, chitinous jaw at their front in the same way as their primitive spine developed. This allowed their teeth, which also began to form as long, cruelly pointed protrusions from this jaw, to have more base and thus have more force when they bit down.

This meant that their favored prey became those that previously had relied upon their shells to keep them alive. Their powerful bite and sharp teeth were designed to peirce and crack shells that they bit down upon, allowing them to access the soft insides of the animal and finish them off. No defense was safe from the Shell Cracker Eel, using speed and a vicious assault to their advantage.

Description: The Fire Shell is another strange offshoot of the Barbed Shell. This one became more resilient to heat, as the waters around the Volcanic Islands became warmer and warmer. This allowed it to begin life in these islands without being cooked in its shell, becoming a floating appetizer for the creatures that presented such danger to it. This also allowed it to use the water that had previous cooked its bretheren as a defense, using its shell to ward off any attackers that managed to make it through the hot waters. However, with the increase of the water temperature, the worry that it would be devoured was reduced by a lot.

Also, another strange occurance happened with these Shells. They earned their name for the bright red shells that they sported, a warning to others that they were dangerous, and that it would be very painful to bite them, as well as a bit of aesthetic value. These bright red shells made the Fire Shell of the most bright of the Era, rivalled only by the Rainbow Shell.

Due to the heat of the water, as well, there was undoubtedly more problem with feeding. So, to make up for the fewer creatures present, the Fire Shell's filtration abilities increased to keep it fed, relying on the creatures that wandered too close to the heated water's deaths as food. Plus, the currents didn't stop for anything, most certainly not a bit of hot water, so it always meant that food could drift over to them in their new homes.

Hey Webster... you're going to have to change that. An acidic stomach is a bit more than one gene. You'd need a gene to get a stomach organ. A gene to have acid-resisting walls, and a gene to actually produce the acid. I'm going to need you to change that, or I can't accept it this round. Sorry.

Finally, it might be able to adjust the amount of water in the bladder to assist with buoyancy control... Don't see why not, but don't know for a fact.

It is therefore able to actively hunt prey without slowing down until the muscles controlling the jet are exhausted. It should be noted that it will generally wrap its tentacle around its shell during this process, for stability against the constant intake of water.

Note: I'm actually going to tweak the Jet Cruncher's behavior so that it waits for its prey before suddenly exploding towards it and seizing it with its tentacle, so as to avoid excessive competition between the two species

A quick side-note about using bacteria and other microbes. For future reference, a creature attempting to use bacteria to accomplish something is a chance that is dependant on if the microbes (unknown to you all) are present in the area and have adapted to do such things as you describe. That said...

This let out a powerful jet of water, that hopefully would deter any attacker. This also formed a system of jet movement, as the creature could spray the spines on one side and cause it to scoot along the ocean floor.

Whether for travel or for defense, this Shell quickly proved that it was going to focus more on ranged combat than close defense like its other shells.

Description: The Cleanser sell is the ultimate of all filtration creatures. From the top of the Shell, a funnel developed, the wide opening of which had a unique skin stretched across it that filtered the water that passed through it. Thanks to a Water Intake Channel inside the creature, suction pulled the water through the large funnel and the skin of it, pulling water through while filtering the edible parts of the water out. This included spores, detritus, floating bits of algae, anything that the shell could eat. This unique filtration system made it so that it sucked as much food as possible to its location, feeding its ravenous appetite, as well as curb the massive amounts of spores that were being pushed into the waters.

OOC: Just ignore the Herbicide Shell that was here before, the idea of it was created in hot blood and not thought completely through.

And with that, Era Two ends. I'll be working on Era Three soon, and I figure I'd post some information here.

Era Three will be the last era in Period One. Then we'll have our first cataclysm.
