Title: Period One, Era Three
Description: The Red Day Dawns

The world was shifting in ways that signaled a new stretch of time would soon be upon this infant earth. The Pangea-like supercontinent has drifted into a megacontinent and a subcontinent. The fungus infestation was largely contained to the megacontinent, while the fan population, spreading ever inward, took a firm hold of the subcontinent. Between the two, a firm division stood, seperating the western aquatic fungal plains from the sea-weed dominated eastern shelf. The first deep-sea trenches were beginning to form as well, creating jagged divisions in the unpopulated open ocean currents. Among the noteworth changes were the spewing Ashen Isles, whose lava flow was beginning to wane. Instead, the belched vast amounts of ash, discoloring the seas around them into a thick, gray soup. While this did not effect our blind creatures, if this trend continued, oxygen starvation would become a problem for those who could not find refuge in the open air.

In this prolific era, many new species came about... So without further ado, here are this era's...

Emergent Species

Shell Family
The descendants of the now extinct Barbed shell splintered in many directions. One of these was the Numbing Shell, which existed among the seaweed beds in the shallows south of the subcontinent. Its mild nerve toxin was effective at deturring predators, but most of its worries had no nervous system, so it wasn't as effective as it may have been otherwise. Also there was the Crawler Shell, a primitive gastropod of sorts that crawled along the bottom of the sea floor, consuming bits of Algae Guts left over from other creatures' kills. However, it's lack of a means to bite itself was a great impediment to it.

A true colorshow of nature, the Rainbow Shell was a seemly useless mutation of the Barbed Shell, which sported a psychadelic shell reminiscent of a tie-dye shirt. Similarly, the striking crimson Fire Shells began to pop up around the volcanic Ashen Isles. These, however, had developed an ability to resist the heat around those islands.

In the last few chapters of the era, the Marksman Shell and Cleanser Shell appeared. The Marksman Shell had a more proactive defense than most other creatures. Taking it water, it prepared to spray it out its hollow spines and propelling it forward while confusing its would-be attacker. The Cleanser Shell, on the other hand, was a much more efficient filtering shell than had ever appeared. It had a specialized hole in its shell that it took in water, and a net-like skin covering that allowed it to retain the nutrients in its body. This also made it grow taller and larger than any other shell of its family.

Armed Shell Family
The Shell Muncher developed a simple scense of smell, allowing it to know when a prey specimen was on the way. It's simple monopod allowed it to trudge over and begin devouring the creature, and its heavy shell ensured it wasn't tossed about in the waves. It's newfound cousins, though took to the waves quite readily. The Jet Cruncher used them to spurt about after prey in a motion like a rock skipping over a pond. In contrast, the Jetstream Hunter maintained a slower but constant speed of travel, sort of hovering through the water as it went along.

Aqueous Worm Family
The Fungus Worm was a logical evolution of its anscenstor, the Algae Worm. This creature was able to digest more fully the nutritious flesh of the fungal growths coating the western tropical shallows. It primarily swam the border between the two regions, but spent more time eating fungus than Babel Weed.

Sporting the meanest jaw of its era, the Parasite Worm was a true powerhouse of its time. It's contracting muscular jaw and four sturdy teeth allowed it to rip through beds of Algae Gut and Raspura, mercilessly slaughtering enough to satisfy its appetite. It's Achilles Heel, however, was its inability to ever sense prey. Similar to this, the Shell Cracker Eel was a specialized carnivorous worm. It's circular jaw gave it the sturdy platform it needed to pierce through the tough shells of the most protected species around. The predator of predators, though, was the Fighting Fish. While not truely a fish, it was the most advanced aquatic creature at this time. It's hinged jaw, anchored ot its chordate, was a powerful tool. Using its two teeth, it could sever other worms in half, which it often did. The apex predator of the ocean ate primarily those who hunted as well.

Terrestrial Worm Family
In the desert sands, the Terra Worm sprang up, able to effectively filter out nutrients from the soil. It's unique ability to create tracts of dark, more nutrient laden soil in its wake. This rich soil would attract many fungi, which would rob the soil of the nutrients. Thusly, the drifting patches of dark soil seemed to snake about the continent's innards, like a stomach parasite.

Fan Family
While some would argue that it is an entirely new family of creature, the Steam Fan was nearly identical to its premordial cousin, save its lack of a stalk. Instead, it was a heat resistant, free floating fan that used the steam vents near the Ashen Isles to launch into the air, and feast on the spores both in the water and out.

On the subcontinent, the belly of the land became filled with the striking towers of the Terra Fan, whose regal appearance and stalwart stand against the desert winds proved them a hardy and resilient species. The Spout Fan adorned the shores, occassionally blasting a fountain of water upward with their central vein. Their water show was most spectacular at dawn, when any sight-gifted species could see the droplets form little rainbows extending over the premordial figures as their feathers slowly danced in the ocean breeze.

Algae Family
Lording over the eastern half of the tropical shallows, the Babel Weed staked its claim by developing a stalk and air bladder that grew it in a near perfect vertical line. While losing its attributes as a true 'algae', it was still primitive enough to be classified thusly. In the depths, it's relative the Dull Algae began mutating into Blanket Algae, coating the depths in a dark brown shag carpeting that covered chasms and bridged undersea canyons.

Tube Family
The tubes continued their evolution, branching for the first time. Most would decend into the Constriction Tube, a sort of double-barreled capture mechanism that double the nutrients they gathered. In a strange turn of events, though, some tubes lost their filter feeding ability, and gained photosynthesis, making thier tubes purely ornamental as their odd shapes attempted to gather sunlight. This gave them a withered, sickly look, no matter how healthy they were.

Stalk Family
In its first mutation, the Branching Stalk developed a series of hollow spines that housed a bacterial symbiote that caused skin irritation and swelling. This Thorned Stalk was much more a hazard than its ancestor, and much more prolific.

Fungus Family
The Fungi continued to spread both bulbed and non-bulbed versions across all mediums, but we beginning to meet resistance. Its spores were consumed by sponges, its roots nibbled by worms, and its stalks consumed by more worms. Despite this, they continued their relentless (and proverbial) march towards world domination, taking over the vast majority of the largest continent and spreading as far away as the Ashen Isles.

The newest innovation of fungus, though, was a floating photosynthetic fungus that absorbed nutrients with its root-net and sustained itself with photosythesis. It was competely free-floating, and was therefore completely subject to the rule of the wind and waves. While not the most efficient organism by any stretch, its strange position meant it went overlooked by several would-be consumers.

Description: Raspuras are a carnivorous offshoot of the Algae Gut, evolving to fill the niche as one of the planet's first predators. Raspuras, though constantly hungry, are little threat to healthy algae guts. They move along the sea floor using their one fleshy foot until they happen upon an unhealthy, dead, or dying algae gut. They fall upon the gelatinous mass with what can only be described as slow-motion ferocity, scraping away at the flesh with their tooth-plate and a toothed, rasping, radula. One algae gut will feed a raspura for a month or more, their primitive metabolisms taking days to digest.

Description: The Numbing Shell is a powerful offspring of the Barbed Shell, which had found that the creatures of the sea were more capable of killing them than they had originally anticipated. So, some of the newer offspring began to develop a more potent defense over time, hardening their half-shells that safeguarded their lives, and adding a different, more hollow kind of spine. This spine would inject a mild nerve toxin wherever they happened to be bitten, and as such would force the creature to A) Let go of them, as it would numb their mouth and make biting rather hard. B) Continue eating and simply hope they could survive the meal or C) Die thanks to the toxin overloading their systems.

Description: Some of the Barbed Shells, however, developed a new way of getting a meal, and protect themselves from predators. Some of them found the defenses they had already adequate, but their filtration systems just weren't enough to keep them alive due to a relative lack of food in their areas. So, they began to develop a hunting instinct, developing a basic mouth on their soft undersides, as well as a basic kind of foot to drag them along on the ground. It now became common to see these little critters dragging themselves along the plains, or even hovering at the edges of cliffs.
Any creature that was on the ocean floor would find a little shell suddenly on top of them, before being devoured, using a sticky fluid that was on the foot of the creature to stick to the creature they were eating, eventually eating it alive. Thanks to its shell, no matter where the creature ran to, it would have enough wait to potentially affect its balance, while still saving itself from predators that tried to eat their meal. Try eating a fish that has a spiked ball on one side of it, after all.

Description: The Terra Worm was formed from a small offshoot of the Desert Worm, focusing more on their soil filtration ability than any side way of gaining nutrition. Indeed, the soil that they passed through, thanks to increased filtration ability, became richer, darker, firmer. Slowly, the Terra Worm, true to their name, was terraforming the planet, turning rocky, inhospitable sand, to rich, life-sustaining soil. They also developed water-retaining skin, so as to leave the safety of the fungal colonies, which absorb water, to spread their enrichment elsewhere, as well as lessen the competiton for food.

Description: The Harvester is just that. A Harvester. Thanks to the spread of the fungus that has choked off the land, the Harvester found a new food source. Worms began to develop severing teeth at the front of their mouths, and as they burrowed began to chew through the roots that the fungus laid down to anchor itself, swallowing it into itself. Thanks to its new diet, a plant digestion system developed inside it, it was able to break down the fungus, and eject what nutrients it didn't absorb behind it into the soil.
It also began to develop more water-retaining skin, allowing it to remove the fungus that kept its predecessors dry, and still manage to keep from killing itself. The Terra Worm too, thanks to the soil enrichment, would undoubtedly aid in keeping the worms moist as they dug through richer, more absorbent soil.

Name: Steam Fans

Description: Very much like it's cousins, the shallow and shore fans, the steam fan relies on its peculiar feathery growths to feed itself. Like the shore fan, it absorbs spores that travel in the air and breaks them down into nutrients for its primary means of sustenance. However, the steam fan has no root unlike its cousins and is subject to both the wind and the steam from the volcanic islands it's normal habitat is within.
As it has little control once airborne, many of these steam fans occasionally end up being carried away to the open ocean where they float until a wave ends their short lives. Others would be carried to the volcanoes themselves where its steam and heat carried them to new heights before it overcame their minuscule amount of heat resistance and scorched them alive.
Still these surprisingly hardy species of fan live on as new generations come about relatively quickly and they enjoy an environment with no competitors.

Description: There was a third species of Shell, called the Rainbow Shell, that sprouted from its original Barbed Shell. These were strange creatures, that developed a bright, rainbow coloring that made it stand out to those that could see. No one quite knows WHY they developed this trait, but no other creature developed sight as of yet, so it seemed that they weren't to affected by this dazzling color.
The Rainbow Shell was unique in the fact that its spines, while others had been hard coated into the shell, were not actually attached to the shell. They were able to be detached when a predator latched onto the shell, allowing it to fall free, and possibly get away safely. This meant that the predator in question was merely left with a mouthful of rather smarting spines, barbed so as to be difficult to remove, and the shell was left none the worse for the wear, not having to worry about being eaten. Over time as well, the spines would regenerate, guaranteeing that it was not left unguarded for long. Merely a nasty present to those that attempted to eat it.

Both of its food sources are located via a basic sense of smell, and it most often travels in swarms which can occasionally increase exponentially in numbers when sufficient feeding grounds have been located, albeit after an extended digestion period.

Description: Some of the Swimming Worms, thanks to their newfound mobility, developed a stronger hunting instinct than their brethren. Over time they lost their filter feeding ways, and instead developed a basic system to devour flesh, developing a powerful circle of a hard, chitinous jaw at their front in the same way as their primitive spine developed. This allowed their teeth, which also began to form as long, cruelly pointed protrusions from this jaw, to have more base and thus have more force when they bit down.
This meant that their favored prey became those that previously had relied upon their shells to keep them alive. Their powerful bite and sharp teeth were designed to peirce and crack shells that they bit down upon, allowing them to access the soft insides of the animal and finish them off. No defense was safe from the Shell Cracker Eel, using speed and a vicious assault to their advantage.

Description: The Fire Shell is another strange offshoot of the Barbed Shell. This one became more resilient to heat, as the waters around the Volcanic Islands became warmer and warmer. This allowed it to begin life in these islands without being cooked in its shell, becoming a floating appetizer for the creatures that presented such danger to it. This also allowed it to use the water that had previous cooked its bretheren as a defense, using its shell to ward off any attackers that managed to make it through the hot waters. However, with the increase of the water temperature, the worry that it would be devoured was reduced by a lot.
Also, another strange occurance happened with these Shells. They earned their name for the bright red shells that they sported, a warning to others that they were dangerous, and that it would be very painful to bite them, as well as a bit of aesthetic value. These bright red shells made the Fire Shell of the most bright of the Era, rivalled only by the Rainbow Shell.
Due to the heat of the water, as well, there was undoubtedly more problem with feeding. So, to make up for the fewer creatures present, the Fire Shell's filtration abilities increased to keep it fed, relying on the creatures that wandered too close to the heated water's deaths as food. Plus, the currents didn't stop for anything, most certainly not a bit of hot water, so it always meant that food could drift over to them in their new homes.

Description: The Terra Fan has developed a fibrous root system to help take advantage of nutrient rich soil left behind by the worm population. It has left the shore and subsequently lost the ability to filter nutrients out of the water. The budding reproduction and fast growing of the Terra root have lead to it growing in linear groups and forming up a mass of roots and feathers acting as a small barrier to spore and worm alike.

Description: The Spout Fan has developed a singular vein running from the very bottom of the fan to the very top, and through the process of cohesion and adhesion water moves from the ocean to the top of the fan, increasing the amount of water the Spout gets to filter, and as an added bonus, the water then gets onto the fans and increases the amount of spores able to stick to the fan. The increase in size is in all directions, adding to the distance the water travels through the plant as well as making it sturdier, and increasing the surface area of the fans.

As for the locations, the bladder is inside the part of the creature that stays within the shell, the muscle system is located between that and the bottom of the creature, while the nozzle is on the bottom. For this reason, it should be noted that it requires the use of its tentacle to raise it off the sand when it first collects water.

Instead of moving in quick pulses, as water is taken in, held, and expelled, this creature has adapted to create a constant stream with which to propel itself, taking water in through a newly adapted channel in its tentacle and expelling it though the nozzle on its bottom at the same time.
It is therefore able to actively hunt prey without slowing down until the muscles controlling the jet are exhausted. It should be noted that it will generally wrap its tentacle around its shell during this process, for stability against the constant intake of water.

This let out a powerful jet of water, that hopefully would deter any attacker. Description: The Shell Cracker Eel was one of those unlucky worm-type creatures that was constantly falling to the Fighting Fish's aggression. This made it hard for them to survive, and difficult for them to eat their shells in peace as well. This meant that a new way to defend themselves had to be formed, and form one they did.

The Shell Cracker Eels became covered in a thin skin, that, while it didn't help their water retention any, did cause amazing static on contact with the water. Thanks to their wriggling motion, this caused it to build rapidly, being stored in special glands all along their body. This meant that any creature that attempted to attack the creature, all the new Shocker Eel had to do was let out that static, zapping a would-be attacker. Also, to aid in its feeding, another sharp tooth appeared in its circular jaw, enabling it to get a better bite out of those Shells.

Description: The Venom Shot Shell was an offshoot of the clever Marksman Shell before it. After having such success with the confusing tactics of shooting a jet of water into their opponents' faces, they developed a way to make that tactic all the more deadly, using the system that was already set up.

The Shell began to develop a venomous barb, that rested inside of the Hollow Shells. These barbs were coated in a powerful, acidic venom that, once inside a would be attacker, stayed true to its name. The venom would spread through a person, affecting their cells and causing them to degrade at an alarming rate. It would target the skin and organs of the creatures that were unlucky enough to cross paths with the Shell, causing them to dissolve with an intense burning feeling, to those lucky enough to have a nervous system.

Description: The Burning Shell, true to its name, developed another unique way of defending itself. The Fire Shell previous, since it didn't really have to develop a way of avoiding those creatures that sought to eat it, developed a more effective way of defending against creatures when their young were washed out towards the edges of the Isles, where the water became more lukewarm.

The Burning Shell became coated with venomous spines, that, when touched and indeed stepped on/bitten/punctured in any way, gave a predator a nasty jolt of a burning venom. The venom was not too deadly, but once it was put into a predator, it would beget a feeling of being consumed from the inside with fire. The pain would hopefully deter any predator that was stupid enough to attack these still fiery red shells.

Description: The Vacuum Shell was a powerful offshoot of the Cleanser Shell, increasing its Filtration capability by a massive amount. With their increased ability to devour anything that came close to them, the Cleanser Shell had to update its feeding ability to keep up. This allowed it to filter more, faster, thus allowing it to feed more often. Also, within it, it developed a coil of water that rushed downwards through it. This was attached to the funnel that let water into it, and, when combined with a unique Water Filtration Vent, made sure that there was a powerful vacuum of water rushing through it at all times.

Water when it reached a vicinity to the Shell began to swirl, before rushing into the funnel and into the coil that lay beneath. This circled the water around and around inside the Shell, allowing the filtering system that was stretched out throughout the coil to devour whatever had been captured. Then, it would rush out of the vent just to one side of it in a wide spew, cleaning the water of anything that would serve as detritus. This also prevented waste that slipped through the filtration skin, such as sand, stone, and the like, from building up, as it was simply ejected along with the water through the vent.

Description: The Latching Shell, unlike its predecessor the Crawler Shell, began to take advantage of its newfound agility. It developed a second sticky foot, allowing it to begin a bipedal movement along the ground, helped by its increased strength in foot muscles. This allowed it to move much faster along the ground, before taking advantage of the quicker movement in another way.

The Latching Shell was named for the backwards-hooked teeth that began to form inside its basic mouth. This allowed it to bite down on a creature, and not let go. Using its feet to wrap around a potential prey item, it would cling onto the creature, using its shell to defend against any attackers. Once it had bitten down, it didn't let go, instead biting over and over again, before ripping backwards. This made it take large chunks out of the creature for it to devour, before biting down again. Should the creature try to shake it off, all it had to do was remain clamped, and the backwards-hooked teeth would lock it in the creature's flesh.

This slime enriched the soil that it was applied to, sinking down into the earth and infusing it with life-sustaining nutrients, beneficial to the Fans that called the shallows home.

However, in a strange quirk of fate, this slime was also infused with the same rainbow coloring that made its creator the strangest creature in the seas, leaving behind a long stream of the bright coloring. It was as though someone had dipped a paint brush in multiple colors, and then just drug it along the ground behind the Shell, creating a spectacularly colored trail behind it. Though this made those creatures blessed with sight easily able to hunt the Shell, it had quite the aesthetic charm as well.

This worm also had more of an ability to retain the water that destroying the fungus deprived it of, meaning that it could be more aggressively used against the fungus, without worrying about destroying its only means of retaining moisture.

However, instead of a tube-like tongue, that was good for squirting, the Poison Needle Worm developed a sharp, needle-like tongue. This allowed it to burrow up and slam its head into either a fungus' roots, a fellow worm, or whatever prey it decided upon (They had been known to attack even the Fans.), and stick its tongue deep into its opponent. Following this brutal stabbing, the gland that held the chlorine would be squeezed, injecting the opponent syringe-style with the deadly chlorine gas.
