Intelligent species have often wondered why life is based of carbon so frequently in the universe. Yes, it is more lightweight, yes it bonds more easily. But silicon is so plentiful, especially on some of the landscapes they grew up on, be it the metallic spires of Quarrit VII, the rust-pits of Tyrridam, or even just the mineral rich crust of Reaguul. What makes silicon life so rare? Lab tests prove it is possible... will such creatures ever emerge?
Unbeknownst to the scientists pondering this very question, a moon off of an unidentified planet was bearing life. A diverse array for such an early time. Life unlike anything the universe had ever seen.

Alkamia from space:
Alkamia was a very metallic moon, heating incredibly despite it's distance from the sun when it wasn't in its planet's shadow. The safest place to be in the extremes of the blistering days and freezing nights on this metal moon was the lakes, which were numerous and deep. Here, the first organisms found a way to survive through temperatures that swung wildly. The first organisms to emerge were the first rust algaes, which in times of darkness, oxidized the silicon crust on which they grew to maintain enough energy for living until the sun would once again warm Alkamia. To feed off them came the flesh worms, simple herbivorous worms akin to the beginnings of life just about everywhere else. Around that same time came the crystal leaves, thin, silicon-based plants that utilized the power to refract light for a more effective photosynthesis. Feeding on them were the metallic worms, a slow swimming, bottom-hugging worm that resembled the flesh worm aside from its sheened skin. In a bizzare twist, the ringed worm was the last protovitae-era creature to emerge, a carbon-based worm that used the power of silicon rings to give itself protection as it fed on rust algae.Extant Species

A dull brownish-green in color, the rust algae is largely responsible for the expansion of the lakes.

Upon discovery of another Ringed or Flesh Worm, the Charioteer would ensnare the newcomer if at all possible.

Upon the removal of the tripwire, the Bear Trap's twin shells come snapping together, often propelling the prey animal out of the bear trap's clutches. To combat this, the Bear trap developed a set of teeth along the outer rim of it's shells, often cutting it's prey in two, causing the bottom half to fall into the Bear Trap.

Whenever a creature brushed up against the Parasite Crystal, it would break, leaving a bit of itself stuck into the creature. However, this did not mean that it was dead. The Parasite Crystal, when in a creature, finally bloomed, creating crystal INSIDE a creature, as it regenerated from the broken off portion inside of them, eventually killing them and settling down again to spread again.

These spires were incredibly fragile due to their unique formation, and to just how thin they were, but thanks to their rigid natures, it was rather easy for them to maintain a small height.

This created a spectacular effect, though, as the water didn't refract light quite as well as the crystal did, making whatever position the sun was in to cause the water inside of them to glow and change color, making it seem like there were veins with glowing, prism-like blood flowing through them. Also, it began to form a more plant-like structure like its cousins, though this only consisted of roots that bound it more firmly to the ground for some reason.

Description: The first real predator on Alkamia, the Eclipse Worm was, as one might expect, not exactly the fiercest creature imaginable. Capturing prey by simply swimming around them, the Eclipse worm used it's increased size to trap smaller worms inside of it's body. By closing it's mouth firmly shut the Eclipse Worm was able to quite effectively trap it's prey within it's body. Simply waiting for starvation to kill it's prey, the Eclipse worm would often spend extended periods of time immobile and without food. Because of this, the Eclipse Worm only indulged in eating meat to supplement a rich meal of algae.

*Is confused* Shaitan is the Islam translation of 'Satan', also known as 'Iblis' in the Quran. Apparently a Djinn or 'Jinn' in the Quran, he was cursed to Hell for refusing to bow to Adam because he thought of himself as superior. To quote directly: "I am better than him. For you made me of fire, and Adam of mud."
Though God granted him reprieve until Judgment day, upon which Shaitan swore to lead all the faithful astray. :huh:

By allowing Rust Algae to grow on themselves, many silicon-based lifeforms found themselves becoming much more able-bodied, due to the algae photosynthesizing additional pure oxygen that was fed directly into the worm's flesh. Eventually this algae, spread from parent to child via the breeding process it's self, developed special adaptations to better aid it's symbiote, and thus better aid it's self (it could only grow so much on a single creature, and only spread via it's symbiote's breeding, thus when the host-worm did well, the algae did well).
